the MT cannot be used for pre 78...(motocross)...at least not at a national level anyway.... pre 78 is for the 75/76/77 model bikes only...

The MT can be ridden up one class at club level. Not sure about the Nationals.

MT's are very soft c/w cr's of that era....

An MT isn't soft when it is more CR than MT. They have the same bore x stroke but the MT had softer porting, less compression and a smaller carbie. Not to mention all the excess weight of a trail bike. As a matter of fact, the MT has a stronger gearbox than the CR, even if the ratios are a little wider. In my opinion, the CR ratios were (are) way too short anyway.
An XR350 is a great bike, but it can't be ridden in pre78, which is what Rookie was asking about.

You can get 1975 MT250's too they were identical and only cost $700 in the day
just saw the add when I was scanning old newspapers for work.

Now an MR 250 would be a good pick as it was more aligned to the 76 CR250 than to the MT

OR as mentioned earlier get a WR Husky and put a YZ D front wheel and brake in there and you have a very competitive easy to live with (just don't go cheap on pistons if it's a 250 as they can seize)

Had a look at Paul Feney's WR430 today, hmm it's not pre78 buy its bloody nice  Pricey but ya do only get what ya pay for

I know that bike, it came from here to a client who then sold it on to P.F. Without being rude to the current seller, his price is "optimistic". I sill have the '82 WR430 project bike here. It's low on compression but has good spark. Wouldn't take much to get running if you're not too fussed about making it pretty. I also have a 1980 WR390, (or most of). It's missing cylinder, head & crankshaft but otherwise complete. Cranks are easy but '80 cylinders & heads not so much as they are a different stud pattern to the '77-'79, I have plenty of those but they don't fit! The 420 cylinders fit & make for a bit more torque. The 390 engine is the pick of the husky engines for me. So I have some projects if you want to go that way Brendan.

Have a good think about doing a project mate as the huskys are great to work on and an easy resto. parts are pretty much fully available
As k says, you can mixn match bits and pieces to suit yourself.

Easy to set up for a disc front if you want to go riding with your mates on their newbies and easy to reconvert for vinduro's.

I'm loving the wr 400, having a heap of fun. seriously thinking of ditching the kato 300 and developing the 400 more now ive got club reg on it.

Johny Maclean has an MR 250...id never heard of em til I saw his 175

They were a very popular mount in the US. I don't think too many, if any 250's made it out here to Australia. I don't think they carry ADR compliance either. Is that an issue for club rego?

I had a MR 250 that I sold in job lot , didn't think that they were rare thing in OZ, was a heavy thing

Thanks heaps for all the input here guys, great listening to everyone's opinions and advice considering the the experience and knowledge those opinions and advice are made up of, well I think I'm gonna change 1 of the pre requisites and not worry about it being a pre78 bike. I'll have limited time to actually ever get out racing so no point buying a bike based on 1 of its uses being only 2, maybe 3 times a year. Soooo I think I've decided that I'm just gonna get hold of the bike I've always thought was pretty much the best looking enduro bike of all time, the bike the I feel has a power delivery and engine that suits me so much better than anything else, I'm just gonna buy what I lust for and keep it at that. 1 bike, 1 beautiful bike!   i would settle for an 82 but I'd be kidding myself to say they're even a shade as pretty as these things, I know a good one don't come cheap and that's cool, I'm in no rush, she'll turn up

No thanks!! Although the apparatus size qualifies for the ownership rights, the talent's not quite as plentiful
