Thrust Washers
« on: January 31, 2014, 05:20:00 PM »
After some advice, have popped the cylinder off the RM400T and lo and behold there are no thrust washers between the big end of the rod and the crank.

I've looked at the parts diagrams for that model on the cmsnl website and it shows thrust washers however there is no sign of them and a good friend who is also a very experienced mechanic says that he used to own another Suzuki that didn't have thrust washers and said that the rod looked like it was possibly designed to control thrust using the piston.

To me that seems odd given what the parts diagrams show.

So I was hoping if someone could set me straight on whether or not thrust washers are actually needed or not.

That's how those Suzuki cranks are, the thrusts are quite small and on the sides....I thought the same on the first one I saw.

pretty common with suzy's,using the piston to centralise the b/end,think of all the oil going into that gap, works for me  :D, :P
work, the curse of the racing class!!
if a hammer dosn't fix it,you have a electrical problem!!

Unlike say Yamaha, Suzuki dont give a tolerance for rod to crank , they give a Rod deflection tolerance, but for me I would make sure it all comes upto specs, and if ie its not the standard rod (is a std suzi rod) would check the rods big end width and compare to the original Suzi and would put thrust washers in to suit.

Suzuki often use thrust washers on the little end (piston pin)
