WHERE HAVE ALL THE BULTACO'S GONE?
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:46:19 am »
Sounds like a song doesn't it, but where have all the Bultaco's gone?, up here in Bris Vegas there use to be a few come to meetings (TM Bills mate-Bultaco Bob for one and there where others)....the only time we see any now are Donny Newell's.....now to me there not ugly ducklings like CDeds and Montessa's  ;D so where are they?. They where pretty popular back in the day and they were not overpriced, were pretty reliable, did well at Enduro as well as Motocross, I think the dealer/parts back up was OK. How are the Southern States going as far as numbers go?. I know there are a few big collectors that have huge collections of them but surely there must be 100's of them sitting in sheds being neglected? So who has a mate with one or more collecting dust?. BTW, they are probably the easiest bike to get parts for for a restoration....I like em....just don't have one. Harry Everts, Bengt Aberg and Jimmy Pommeroy all raced them at GP level and won races. They may have not ever won a World Championship but neither did Maico. Wasn't there some sort of Bultaco register a few years back that had an event each year?....where have they gone?.....someone must know the answer.

They come and go. There have been a few peaches on Gumtree and ebay recently. Sadly I'm not in a position to have picked them up.

<P.S. Maico did win a world championship. The 250 in 1957>

Heard a while back that someone out at Euchareena western NSW has about
50 Bullys rusting away in his shed.
Cant remember his name but use to sell plastics and restore seats and
advertised in VMX.
Got him to do a seat for me about 10 year ago and it took him 18 months to complete the job. ::)
Never again.

P.S. Maico did win a world championship. The 250 in 1957
THREAD HIJACK ALERT 8)
Fritz Betzelbacher won and Willi Oesterle came second the 1957 European 250 Motocross Championship aboard Maicos. 1957 was the last year of the European Championship which gained 'World' status 1958. Maico tragics like to cling to the belief that the European Championship was a world title by proxy. Adolf Weils close second to Hakan Andersen's Yamaha in the 250 and Willy Bauer's second (by a mere two points to Roger D) in the 500 class in 1973 was Maicos best year followed by Neil Hudson's second in the 250 title in 1979 and Kees Van der Ven's second in the 1980 250 title. There were numerous third placings in both classes in the seventies. Despite press reports to the contrary, Maico never won a road racing title either despite a number of GP wins in the 125 titles by Dieter Braun and Börje Jansson during the late sixties and early seventies.

It's a pedantic point Mark, but, taking the European TRIALS championship, in 1974 (the last European championship) a round was held in the US. The infamous Saddleback park round where half of the entry was excluded on time. WTF? A European championship with a round in the US? Go figure.

Imagine what would happen to the Bultaco market if the king of one make hoarders, Anthony Suttor decided to sell his 100 plus Bultaco's? I shudder when I think of that shearing shed chocka block full to the brim with row after row of Bullies gathering dust. I've heard that his farm is up for sale so I'd imagine that the collection will see daylight more sooner than later.

He's kept them too long.. The price and demand for 70's mxers is declining while the 80's stuff is booming and on the rise, particularly pre 90 bikes.
