What would be the best Donk

what would be the best donk for a Pre85 MX  sidecar ???  me would like all boxs ticked- Readily available including parts
           reliable
           powerful
           cost effective ( yer Im a cheap ass)
i.e what was the best open class Motocrosser in 1984? Rm, YZ, CR ...............? :P

I'm not sure Shelpi, I've herd that the CR gearbox could be suspect, but I've ridden Nicks VMC quite a bit and it seems fine, at least you can get parts for them and lots of them, the 465 would be ok I imagine the RM, Dave Mattock had an RM sidecar for 20 years and it seemed to be ok....

They all make good power so would depend on set up with pipe carb  fly wheel weights and all that sort of thing.....

KTM 500 with a 495 piston gives you a 540cc engine. i rode a later model very grunty engine for an outfit

Shelpi see Hoony's answer above ;) or there are my recommended big twin ,big bore Yamaha XS650 remakes , even one with a TX750 kit will get you ( both) from a to b on the track with joyful amounts of pants pooing terror for reasonable cost.  cheers Tim754

It was chatting with Paul Robertson then Dave Mattock that got me thinking both have said good things plus I am a Suzuki 2smoke sort a guy  :o So anyone got a RM 465, 500 Donk laying around ???

Shelpi a bit of info about a mistake I nearly made. When looking to build a pre85 lighterweight. ::). I sourced a pretty cheap LT 500 quadzilla engine, believing they came out in 84. Wrong production of those brutal power plants was from 85 till 90. The early RM 500 are kosher.

Yeah mate, just a quick warm up.....'cept those South Aussies would have been out for a 100k bike ride before breaky.

Sure a big 2 smoker is kosher for pre  85 but in the spirit of the sport the big twins were in their twylight then and they deserve to be preserved in that light. If we let an influx of lightweights into that class, all the big old girls will get parked in sheds and forgotten, just as they were back then....mark my words.
Best 'real' engines for the class are the 650+ twins and they come from a big range of makers......I know you like to think outside the square Shelpi, but for the for the good of the class, stick to them. They are fun to ride too.
I had a swing on a CR500 yesterday and found it was very easy to get around on , but by crickey, you had to be on your toes as I only had to imagine a different line and I could get it to change direction...prob set up way too soft for Echo Valley,  so I prefer they older bikes for what we do.
If you want to go big 2 stroke/lightweight, go to a pre90. You'll have lots of cheap fun and step your way into moderns mutch more easily.
