Hubs. Paint or powder coat??
« on: August 10, 2013, 05:05:45 pm »
Like the question says paint or powder coat on hubs?

Whats best??

Thinking powder coat would be a pain around the spoke holes??

Interested in opinions on what's best?

Paint for me ( satin black ) ;)
I am not keen on powder coats , bitch to remove later and to thick for my likes.
I have herd it can crack on frames ( flex ) and water can get in there and rust the frame

Personally I hate powder coating metal as that can create all sorts of problems with corrosion so I would never do it to a frame or such but I can't see a problem (aside from spoke hole clearance) with powdercoating alloy hubs.

Thanks for the feed back

I'm going to go for paint.

I was thinking about trying engine enamel as it is pretty tough an hard wearing.

I use PPG, GMH sub frame satin black.  If you have a spray gun that is..
It's been on the hubs of my RM400 for twelve years and still looks new.
I have used it on all of my resto's.
You need to give it light coats and leave it to dry overnight between coats.

It's probably a combination of what look you want, whether it's a racer or a garage queen and if you can paint it yourself (even with spray cans)

I'm going to probably do my couple of restos with spray cans, unless I buy myself a compressor, but I will also leave some items unpainted after vapour blasting for that worksy look  ;)  The bikes are only going to be racers and you can get a good result doing it yourself with patience and preparation.

You can see some photo's on here, the hubs on the 400D will give you an idea of the finish.

I used a spray can etch primer that did a great job on my cases (satin black)
