1972  DT1 250 mx, have any of you old fas have good review of this model, and what are there bad points.

We where wrecking these in 1974 in NZ, sad but true......the MXA and YZA models came out and then nobody wanted them anymore.....funny how time changes peoples perspective on things...I quite like them....pretty bike and plenty of parts available.

Had a couple of those in our paddock back then and they were a really good
bike IMO. Very easy on the eye as well

I bet if a nice one came up now it wouldn't even be a "poor mans yz" these days, if one surfaced in this country in very tidy original order I'd reckon it'd fetch 4-5 k. Pre80 Dt's and Rt's of all types seem to be pulling rather good figures dispite the overall downturn in prices lately.

That right Johnny`o, I had one back in 2000, and on the head stem the frame number was DT1mx stamped on it, plus I bought one off Firko, and that bike would be very close in being restored by one of our club members. Mark would know if the serial frame number has DT1 on it or DT2.

Dave im pretty sure that all pre 74 RT's and DT's will have "1" frame number prefix, but that doesn't make them a model designated DT1 or RT1, but this is really Firko or Ian's forte as far as folks here go! They will prob be able to elaborate much clearer than myself.

 Dave, I remember like it was yesterday you saying that you were going to keep the one I sold you and race it as a tribute to your late brother who'd raced a similar bike back in the day. You sold it on about 45 minutes later .

I'll have a look at the # on Ian's frame in the morning. It's still sitting here waiting to get back to Tassie.

It was not my brother Mark, it was me, I rode one in 72, I just would like to know what others thought of them.

I was too young to ride one in '72, but I did own one for a month and then sold it (I wish I had that one back).  All the articles I read said it was still flawed compared to the Euro bikes, but was a nice effort by Yamaha!  Weight, rear suspension and powerband (road racer like) are the main issues.  They all liked the styling, ergonomics, front brake and forks.  Cool bikes for sure!  I have an RT-2MX basket case that is a couple bikes back in the que.  I'm in flux right now, so not sure if it will make the cut.

I raced the 72 model, got use to it habits , I wouldn't say I like it, I race it at barrabool in 72 on a very muddy wet track the bike become very heavy and a pig to ride, if yamaha had have cut the weight
off these models, they would have been much better bike.

Yes they did jerry, most people didn`t have $1790 to pay for a YZ back then, DT where overweight.

Dave with a modern pipe and say mid to late yz electrics and modern shocks and fork internals they would be a great bike . the best thing is they are unique as they are the first motocross bike Yamaha built . Iain

I agree with you Iain, there's a lot you can do with one of them.....as much as I would love a YZ360A to go with my 125 and 250, I could see myself building a 360 version of one of these....mudcatchers and all.
