I beleive Deano had the head on the right cast , so Frank , as they say , had a blank canvas to work with.

The pic i posted above is the '79 RN500 works bike that was in Australia late '79 for a few different riders at different races. It's worlds apart from a production RM400.
1980 was the last, same bike as the above one.

JohnnyO can you explain please where Goofs RM500 fits into these boxes of goodies or was Goofs bike just a good worked quality production RM500 for 83 ?

Yes Alison Goof's bike was a heavily modified production RM500 single shock. A fairly different bike to the last of these twin shock bikes.

Why all the extra welding and machining on the surface area of the cyl head?

Why would you cast a new head to put a modern style combustion chamber in it.....we just re-machine it and shrink a solid alloy slug into it then CNC the new combustion chamber.....easy peasy and if you fark it you just remove the slug and put a new one in......also we put the spark plug in the middle.

I don't think that's a new casting, you can see where it's been welded up around the stud holes..

I think you will find that the welds are where there were some minor deficencies in the castings. The deficencies were filled and machined for the obvious reasons

As for the reasons for casting new heads , you need to ask Deano.
