Me thinks they have a shorter shaft travel, stiffer linear rate spring.

Same travel, slightly longer shock overall but they can be shortened to the same length. The J spring has a single rate (because of the linkage system) so you use your H spring on them if you want to use them on the earlier bike to give it that initial plushness.

I ran one of these on my 465 but they ain't EVO legal because they came off the pre 85 bike.

they'll fit the earlier models, i've got a YZ490J shock for my IT250J, i had it shortened by 10mm to keep the ride hight the same. these J shocks are better than the earlier one's as they have a larger diameter shaft, plus the adjustable compression dampning.
