Importing from U.S.A
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:46:28 pm »
Has anyone imported their own bike from U.S.A and if so how did they go about it, who to use, what costs involved and any tips or traps.
Thanks.

YEs i got my bike out the states with them all good.  no title no leave.  but there are 2 ways around that :O)

either way dont forget its 600 for the bike 60 in customs and 10% GSt on the purchase price.  The containers leave from long beach so all you need to do is get it ther and george at prefered will bag it and tag it for you ( crate it up)

I've been using Roly Leahy for a few years now and have nothing but praise. In fact he's handling my new Ducati pre 65 bike right as we speak.

Boat takes about 25 days goes to NZ,melb, syd then lands in QLD, when they get the container its another 3-4 days to clear it, then you pay your money and hey presto.   A Motor in a small wooden crate is $150 plus GST and customs etc.

As firko states the more you do it the easier it is, the best thing you can do is get it right at the other end, packed right and paperwork right, if you get that sorted it smooth sailing nothing can get lost or damaged.

Dont forget the GSt and extras when your doing your sum though.  BEst saved for your dream bike rather than shipping a plonker however.

Customs does some very dubious additons however, like you pay GSt on the transport to the docks ? WTF even if you drop it off yourself they make up a number say $200 and charge you GST on it, the customs rules are bullshit but all the importers are too scared to question it incase there freight gets  red flagged.  the system is a money grinder and covert IMHO

For what its worth on a 'whole ' Bike valued at $4,000 sent in july exchange rate ( parts are cheaper) this is the brakedown you would get billed in August ( well this is my current bill anyway):

Freight on goods   $600
Customs clearance (full bike) $195
Quarantine inspection ( regardless of whether it does or not) $65
Import approval $ 50
GST on goods $485. ( based on usd to aussie conversion when it lands in customs here plus all that bullshit transport fees crap etc.  i think they just make the numbers up myself

Basically you will need to set aside in this case $1,421 to send a bike to qLD if you paid $4k for it in the states.   the only differance would be if the bike was less you can adgust the gst component down.

Hope this give you a fairly concrete guide so you can do the numbers for a thumbs up or thumbs down on your next purchase or at least weight it up with buying a local unit in AU

Still waiting for it to arrive, hope the ship is'nt lost in the triangle or sumthing. But so far its been dead easy to deal with them. i posted the same thing last time, same details everyone has just i get a lot of PM about it paul :O)

what ship is it on ? the yanderra has docked so you will see that container this week , find out the name of the next ship from them ex LA and you can track it online, up to when it docks, then add 10 days.

the price is $600 shipping but the rest is the variation on customs, GST etc etc see my post above.

Sorry Paul what i got you cant get here, so i cant give you a price here. i have owned it for a while but with no title meant it potentially could be seized or held, so we have spent a while doing the logistics, actually was selling it through a museum in the states for a while cause it was looking too risky to ship, but alas all has worked out in the wash , as it was a NOS museum piece, factory flattrack race bike we where able to get some competiton/museum paperwork that meant no title was required, problem then was it came on the radar as a collectors item and was heading down the histrorical paperwork - extra duty tax etc, anyhow in the end some great US guys did some dancing and were able to get an exception and we did a bit of a work around and basically now she in QLD in storage as we speak.  i flying up to sydney this week to pick up the crate and drive it home to SA, so we can have some time bonding.  IM keen to flat track race her again but based on the price these things are fetching stock, not race level with history and the price guys are raping for on parts ATM im not so sure i can risk it, maybe just static display it, or promo day stuff.   lets wait and see  :-\
