75 TY250 rebuild
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:08:11 pm »
Here is my current project a 1975 TY250 in less then pristine condition. I managed to get the 77 running when i picked these up. Paid $400 for both of them

Here is the frame and forks refinished

And here after I got it running last night

So far of had everything bead blasted, sprayed the frame, refinished and rebuilt the forks, new rod, rod bearings seals, and rings. I did my best with the wheels. I have been trying to do this one as least expensive as possible but I am pleased on how its comming out so far. It for me or my wife to tool around with the kids for the most part, but i would love to try a vintage trials or two.

Cheers, Chris

wow those heaps are lucky to have found you,  Looks like you are giving them the royal treatment to get them back to their former glory.  They are looking really good.

There are numerous places here in the UK that support those bikes to you can go mad with the restoration if required.  Every widget imagineable is available with alsorts of modern tune up goodies if required.

Keep the pics coming, they are looking really good!

Im not sure if i was lucky to fine them! I did find out that the yellow onw came from my hometown about 6 hours from where I got it which was cool. I usually do two staged rebuilds, First to get it operational with out brakeing the bank, then tiding up the bits that are not quite right. Rear shocks are definetly on the short list.

Can anyone give me input on the seats, the long one on the 75 has a plastic/wood base or I was going to cut it down to make one as the 77. The one on the 77 is a metal base and amost all rotted away. Was the one on the 75 an optional one or aftermarket?

Also does a chain tesioner from a Ty175 work on the 250?

Thanks

Same chain tensioner TY175 TY250
The later short seat will fit the early bike but early frames need tabs added to the frame for the rear seat mount screws
The 74 and 75 models both had a fibreglass seat surround with the seat attached to it as standard. 76 and later had the seat that mounts straight to the frame and those seats are the ones available from SM Products
The later rear guard is longer to fill in the space behind the seat that is covered by the fibreglass seat surround on the early ones. The long guard will fit either frame. Beware there are also short guards on the market.
Definitely very good value purchase

sorry I just noticed the frame you are going to use already has the seat mount tabs
The relocation of the top shock mounts on the frame with the white tank is a common mod to get a bit more ground clearance, steepen the steering and soften the rear end action

The 77 frame has had the shock mounts moved on the frame, the swingarm is unchanged. I may clean and paint that frame up to have a modded one also. I did cut the tabs for the seat mounting off the 77 and welded them to the 75 frame. For the fenders I was thinking DC plastic even though its not the best, it is the most cost effective and similar to stock (at least the front fender is) is ther rear they have the right one? I am sure i could mount a universal one easy enough if need be.

I bought a DC Plastics rear for one bike but it was the short one that suits a bike with the fibreglass seat suround. I got it from someone who bought it by mistake when they really wanted a long one. Don't know if DC Plastics make a long version. The DC Plastics guards are quite thin and not quite the right shape, but are flexible.

These are very good quality replica long rears for TY250 and you can get them in white or yellow http://www.inmotiontrials.com/Images/20110427a.jpg The little ones in the photo are TY250 long rears and the big ones are TY175 rears

Thanks for the info guys, I got the bike running a few days ago and took it out around the house. I still have to sort out a few things and order a few bits. I have found a older trials guy that is only about 10 min from me and I think he will have a few of the things I need.
I can believe how many vintage riders are hiding in the bush up here!

Here are a few more photos, I went over to meet the trials guy the other night, turns out he is a Bata dealer but has a few Ty's in the shop and bits. I scored new fenders and a 74 seat base and seat so im quite happy. he also get bits from SMP all the time so I can get all my bits through him, and his prices are more than fair! He also had lots of bits in stock
Anyways here it is with the bits sitting on it (should have it tidied up by the weekend)

I may, let me get the bike together and I will let you know, I may not use the seat that is on the bike right now (last pick) but should get that sorted soon

when you come to fit that front guard to the SMP mount, it looks neat if you cut the flap off and mount the guard the other way around (rounded end at front)
