Rl250 project
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:56:39 pm »
Picked up my bargain basement rl250 project today, and at a glance the only major issue (apart from it needing a full resto) is rusty forks. Does anyone know if the upper tubes are common to other models?

Paul, pretty sure I used '82 DR250 inner tubes in mine. The RL tube is 'supposed' to be unique to the RL but I never properly sussed out how or why. I think 35mm TM250/400 an RM125M and S may also work. Will try and do do some comparisons when I get a few moments ;)

Hold the gracious till I double check Paul :D..clutching at straws..it was quite a while ago, my grey matter needs defragging and the more I think about it the less I remember exactly just what I mixed now. 'Pretty sure' I still have a pair of rusty RL forks here to check though. The TM/RM fork tubes 'may' have been a little shorter hence I was thinking DR250. TS250ER maybe another option. Shit..I dunno..will have to physically check ::) nice to see you finally have some quality in the stable ;D

Doc .. I gave you a set of Dr 250 forks  way back and you fitted them to one of your treasures ;)

yeah I remember Stew..pretty sure those inners went into the TM250 front end I fitted to the TM125 way back. They were a little longer and I had to fit spacers to make it 'legal'. Near certain the forks in the RL at the moment are infact TS250ER in their entirety. I was going to swap the lowers and internals but never got that far..too impatient and it rode well enough as is :P

Paul..whatever the go is (which, I shall eventually re-enlighten myself to) there are alternatives that can be used so it's no biggy ;)

Cheers mate, no real hurry, won't be starting it for a couple of months. Looking forward to further enlightenment.

Motor spins freely, selects gears, all shaft splines are perfect, and it's still on the standard bore with no gouges at all. I thought it was only other people who found bikes like this?

Too late, I went down to the shed earlier and welded an old spanner onto the gearshaft
