Pulled the rubber cover back, full of water no rusty bits found though lucky you metioned it, seems to be operating the decomp fine do you hold your finger on it while kicking or push it once before kicking ?.Have a heavy leg Ian not got kicked that far forward yet but have takin your advice on board as i can see it easily happening. Cheers Mav.

that'd have to be one of the coolest old photo's i've ever seen Bill
i'd love to have one like that of me in my younger years.
so back to the RT2 kicking back story,
it was only a matter of time before someone was to say it so i may as well be the first,
CDI, CDI, CDI...
find one that fits and fit it!
these things are the kickback king with only the origional piston port RT1 being worse,
if thats possible.
a lot of people mount thier kick lever way forward so it clears the leg as they do have a rather unusual bend to them, but having had mine kick back one time when i had my kick lever in the forward position, well, lets just say never again as it'll throw the leg into the handlebars even more so.
my kick lever is mounted more rearward, it makes starting a bit more finicky but i reckon my legs worth it.
complete stator CDI from the DT400 or some IT models should bolt straight on.
mine runs a YZ490 set~up that needed a bit of work in the lathe to make it fit snuggly.

i'm sure other will also vouch for the validity of the cdi on these beasts

Heard allot about the cdi fixing kick back will have to source one, has anyone used one of these new units before, when you put the dt400 stator coils and trigger in do you have to run the dt400 flywheel as well or can you use the original one.

I removed the kick starter on my RT1 before I did my old bones damage!. If I can't find some-one to push it bad luck!
A stronger spark is necessary to minimise kick-back.
The decompressor on the early RT1 has got a fairly small bypass port which can get carboned up so even if the valve moves it won't let any pressure out. I assume the later ones are the same.
 Fun machine.
cheers pancho.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!

Nice pick up there mavman. I had that 360 on my ebay watch list. I bought one a few years ago but haven't started the resto yet. Mine still had the tools. I had about 3 RT's over the years from when I first got my license back in 76.

And I concur with everyone they are a bitch to kick start and like others my knee wacked into the bars many times.

Here's mine

I picked up this little gem DT125 a few months ago for $200 it's all there and goes like a charm

Guys if you fit a later model YZ kick lever it makes life a lot easier even on a RT1 non reed up to 390 . Also Les Richters  sells a nice cable operated decompressor that fits into the spare spark plug hole. Im running a Yz d 250 cdi . Mavman yes you need the whole dt 400 cdi system it makes a 360 a joy to start .

Try using one off a R5 road bike that should clear the up pipe . from memory I think this was a fold out kicker that was used in the early 70s it gave a bit more stroke in length of kick . I have a old Aussie dirt mag Ill try to find the artical and post it .

I use both DT2MX and MX250 kickers on my DT1/RT1 Yamaha's. They've got a better leverage and tuck out of the way much better than the original. A DT400 CDI and a decent decompressor in the spare plug hole (not the piss poor original RT1 gizmo) make them much easier to start.

Wally, first step is to find you a DT400 CDI and a decent decompressor and then you won't need to troll the Nepean pits looking for a sucker to push start you ;D.

Pulled the bowl on the fuel tap off today and the whole carb and cleaned both out both full of sh1t no wonder it wouldnt rev suprised it ran at all havent ridden it since because it fowled a plug and couldnt get it to clear then found a plug similar in the boat got it going 10:00pm and what a difference revs very free might be a different bike to ride, was a bit underwhelmed after riding modern stuff for so long but think it might be different now.

You have that 'How do you turn this thing off? ' look on your face.  :D Great photo. And look at that smooth skin. Young and dangerous!

That's a Camel jersey ... looks like some sort of schoolboy class at a British GP perhaps?  (I don't
think it is TM Bill.)

Every time your 360 kicks back, you are one step closer to cracked idler gears and
a split/cracked clutch cover ... which starts where kickshaft emerges.   So, it's well worth lubing
and de-coking that decompressor!

Yep its a schoolboy race at Colemore in the south east , it was the first race i ever holeshot  ;D but came undone later when i threw a chain  ::)

The Camel bib i bought at the British  GP ( you could buy ones with out numbers and put on your own ) wish i still had it .
Probably would have been better off spending the money on a pair of goggles  ::)
