Just reading about the spoke problem with your KLX. I had a friend who had one in 1980. He broke a lot of spokes as well. I'd never thought it was engine torque. I put it down to him weighing about 130kg.
What was your racing weight Geoff? (not suggesting this would be the problem).
Cheers, Grahame

I know a bloke who broke a heap of spokes in his KDX175, without even riding the bike... :-X
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Ha, good on ya ;D
My racing weight back then was around 80 Kg's
Wish I could be back there now.

And I have since vowed not to let 'Fat Bastard' ride my KDX again ;D

The Alpine was a DNS for me.
The KLX was in need of a rebore and in a bid for power I went the big bore option, only I became greedy in my quest for power and went the 290 kit instead of the 270 kit.
This meant that I had to split the cases as they had to be machined to accept the bigger liner. Several weeks should have been plenty of time but I didn’t get the cases back until Saturday arvo.
Took me 3 attempts to put the cases together with the gears actually engaging. As a mechanic I made a good sheetmetal worker.
I needed to be up at 4 in the morning to make the drive to the event so once it got to midnight I threw my hands in the air and went to bed, and stayed there.
It would be several more years before I could get my act toget

I actually finished the 81 Alpine (#127) I found this an easier ride than the Devils Pinch

Don't remember anything about this one, I must have entered it to have been posted the results
Can't remember if I Dnf'ed or Dns'ed

As we are talking about Ian Drydale in another thread you will note he finished in this one, XR 500 from memory
He dnfed the Alpine.

Also just noticed a young Arno Dnf'ed the Alpine too

You also got me good in the MX section.
I was actually quite proud of my hillclimb test as a lot of the guys in front of me were experts, that KLX sure could go fast down hills.
I think it was also a bonus for me only having to go fast for 108 seconds
When events get longer than 2 minutes I start to fade

What bike were you riding that year John?

I was on the KDX 250.
I botched the hill climb badly, had a great run up the hill, think I got 3rd gear and was fairly humming at the top. as I got there, I got  the sun full in my eyes as I crested the hill and lost all vision!, went straight over the top (missed the track completely) locked the front brake up when I saw where I was going and slid all the way down to the bottom on my arse. picked the bike up, slipped under the bunting and roared back over the hill.

hilarious

One more thing Geoff, How did you post these up? I sent mick at EBT a heap of pdfs of my results but he couldn't get them to load. were these jpeg files or pdf's?

Now that you mention it I do recall the sun in eyes moment and it was a bit tricky at the top.

I scan and post in jpg format, I should be able to change your Pdf's to jpg's if you want to e-mail them to me.

Lots of familiar names in there!  ;D
I reckon Tony Reefman might be the father of Wayne or Warren something like that.
Regardless, I've still got video of him cutting the course repeatedly to pass me at a motocross in Mount Gambier!
Yes, I do hold a grudge.......    ;D ;D ;D
