80's Enduro results
« on: April 22, 2012, 09:31:33 pm »
My first Enduro
My results were pretty woeful. Flat tyre, got lost and didn’t understand the timing but I made it to the end to become one of 2 bookends called Geoff.

Never mind Geoff. You got close to beating Brian Stanley, though!
He was a nice bloke but I could never remember the name of his guide dog.................  :P

Excellent stuff GMC, thanks for sharing. At least you finished your first enduro... (I didn't). Do you have any photos from these glory days?

I improved my standing in the second round of the 81 Vic series at Erica.
It must suck to win your first event, you would have nowhere to go after that.

No Tex. no photo's from my non-glory days, I was flat out keeping my KLX running, no time for camera's

I also have the results for the 81 Devils Pinch, Alpine & Stockmans Enduro’s if anyone is interested.

Otherwise I jump to 82…
Alexandra Club ran a ‘Super Challenge” which was a new concept.
I thought it was a good idea and event but it only lasted a couple of years, maybe even only this once?

It was meant to bring both Motocross and Enduro riders together to compete with each other. It was held on private property so no Rego was required.
There was no grading, it was all-in and only divided into under 200cc and over 200cc
The event was divided into three sections, a motocross, complete with 40 at a time starts, winning was irrelevant though (although it always helps), it was all about you time.
We lined up for a flag start, I was busy watching the flagman when everyone else took off. I had been watching the wrong flagman. >:(
Must have been a conspiracy against me as everyone else new which flagman to watch. ::)

Then a hare and hound course, I think we did 3 laps from memory.

Finally a hill climb. The hill climb was unique though as you not only were timed going up the hill but also across a short piece of track at the top and then timed down the hill as well.
My KLX and I didn’t fare to bad in this one, if there was one thing my KLX could do well it was go down hills fast.  ::)

Ha, yeah, my career so far has stumbled from last to fourth last.
I'm such a braggart.

I like looking at old names on programs etc. Its always a bit of where are they now and also noticing names that we didn’t know in the day but we know now as they are still involved.

Some memories in those shots RMYZIT
The only cameras I knew of in those days were Box Brownies.
None of those rider numbers show up in the results so I guess they were all DNF’s like me.
45A is smiling but I bet he doesn’t know what’s in store for him
I’m guessing that is you on the IT?
What class did you ride in?

I get a mention at the top of the results for Devils Pinch.
No not by name but I was one of the 13 that battled to the end but timed out.
I remember it being really wet and deep muddy ruts for miles. If I fell off once I must have fallen off a hundred times.
Struggled on to the end and the guy at the last check said congratulations you made it and I thought ‘at forken last’
Then he looked at my time card and said sorry you only get 90 minutes over time and your 92 minutes over, that’s a DNF
Pissed me off at the time but that’s life.

Yeah I timed too out at the last control at 81 Devils Pinch it rained most of the event and was rutted with bogs riding in and out of pine forest single track covered with wet slimey roots, banging the bars, levers and fingers against the trees all day. My brand new IT250H lost several bolts and nuts, both wheels had the spokes loose and I lost my tool kit. This was my first enduro. A tough day!  ;D

That was a tough event for your first.
My KLX was forever breaking spokes, average of 2 front spokes and 4 rear spokes nearly every Enduro. Then after I fitted the big bore kit it amped up to 6 or 8 rear spokes each Enduro.
I put it down to the wheels being 125 based and too light for the extra torque.
Stop laughing you bastards, the KLX did actually have some torque.

The Alpine was another tough one, 161 starters 46 finishers.
Another DNF for me. Don’t really remember it, I think the cold got too me.

The Alpine was a DNS for me.
The KLX was in need of a rebore and in a bid for power I went the big bore option, only I became greedy in my quest for power and went the 290 kit instead of the 270 kit.
This meant that I had to split the cases as they had to be machined to accept the bigger liner. Several weeks should have been plenty of time but I didn’t get the cases back until Saturday arvo.
Took me 3 attempts to put the cases together with the gears actually engaging. As a mechanic I made a good sheetmetal worker.
I needed to be up at 4 in the morning to make the drive to the event so once it got to midnight I threw my hands in the air and went to bed, and stayed there.
It would be several more years before I could get my act together
