Improving braking on an RM465Z??

Hi All

I am looking at trying to improve the breaking on my 465

I have new pads and cables and adjusted the front as much as I can and while OK it does not install any great confidence to open her right up

Some questions....

1. Can anyone recommend someone who can re-sleeve the drum in Sydney?
2. Will a 83 /84 500 Double leading shoe brake plate fit straight on or do I need the whole wheel
3. Will the whole 500 wheel fit onto an 82 465?
4. Any other simple tips to try and pull it up a bit quicker!!?

Vandy put me onto cutting some angled slots across the brake pad material and de-glazing the lining with some sandpaper. Worked really well.

actually,
what i do is to cut the slots diagonally making sure the direction of the slots send the "rubbish" to the outside of the hub and not back into it.
i also give the both the lining and the pads a quick "whip" blast with a sandblaster as it takes any glazing off of both surfaces thus giving more grip. if that makes sense.
but then again, all my bikes are Yamaha's and thier brakes as we all know, work.
well lubed cable and actuating arm in the backing plate are also a must ;)

An angle grinder with a metal cutting disc, the older style though (3-ish mm thick?), not those new wafer thin ones

Just confirming that all I need is the backing plate (+ other bits) and that will slot straight into the existing drum of the 1982 465?

I will stand corrected, but I think you need the hub to suit as well, as the dia. is smaller on the twin leading shoe set up. The cable looks different as well as the left lower fork leg as well. Mine was a complete front end swap so I didn't play around with what fits etc. I'm sure one of the Suzuki guru's here will give you the facts.

Yes looking at the Clymer manual (where I should have started) the double leading shoe brake drum diameter is 130mm versus 150mm for the single

So my next question to the brains trust is If I were to lace up an 84 hub or source a wheel will the axle and spacers all fit to the 465 forks? Looking at the manual it give the impression it does but I would like to make sure before going to the trouble and expense

As always any advice is greatly appreciated

81-84 125 wheels all have the same brake drum and will work with the twin leading brake.
The only problem is the backing plate won't be on the correct angle on the 465 forks.
So you may have to source another set of forks to suit, 125/250/500E, 250/500D would work.
May be best to try getting yours working first, as the twin leader wasn't that much better ::)

You need the forks with the shrunk on axle mounts and the slot for the backing plate lug is at 90degrees to the fork leg to fit the twin leading shoe backing plate. Pretty sure '82-'84 forks will fit the twin leader backing plate.

You can get the last drum XL 500 front wheel which had a awesome drum brake , downside was it's heavy as in really heavy. But it is an easy retro fit 
Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle
