What needs to be done to an 84 Honda CR250?

Hi Guys,
Well it seems I have secured an 84 CR250 to ride the pre 85 class this year. My question is, what is the short list of mods or fixes that seems to make this model work best? Anyone on here with experience on this model, I'd be interested to hear what you did to make it handle well and if you tried any after market pipes.

If you want more power from it , you must be one hell of a rider  ;) they are a good all round bike and plenty quick enough .

Shane STW996 can probably tell you how to set one up for vintage racing ( i only had one in the day ) Still got a one owner 84 model in the shed  :)

Good choice of bike for pre 85  :)

Thanks Bill, I am looking forward to getting to know this new girl's 'personality'. My all time favourite is my 79 CR250RZ but I wasn't getting enough rides. The new girl on the block will have to be good to hold it's own against the RZ. You've got a one owner of this model aye, that would be nice to have.

KJ. About all you have to do is keep a eye on the butter flies in the ATAC. They carbon up and don't close properly so you lose power ;) Darcy

On my 250RE I realized after breaking two pistons, that the exhaust ports needs a good chamfer on the top edge or the piston crown will catch on it.

An Ohlins rear shock transformed the rear suspension.

And that was 'all' she cried  :-)

I seem to remember most fast guys on these ran Pro Circuit barrels and pipes and WP rear shock , I think they also tossed the Honda exhaust chamber thingy from the barrel.

The 85 's had the butterfly valves ,the 84 has a plunger.

You're thinking of the ProCircuit 125's Slak, when they had the atac inbetween the cylinder and the pipe ,the 84 250 atac is on the side of the cylinder.The 85 250's had the 125 style atac which you remove and replace with a supplied flange if you use a DG pipe (which is thier 86 pipe) but its not a good idea

Some jetting specs would be good, mine has a DG pipe and on the last OS, should fly.
I tried to fit a PWK38 flat slide but gave up, the standard carby should do the job though.

Well, I received my 250 and have been reminded again of the cowboy butchers out there who own bikes and don't deserve the privilege. What a mess! Maybe it's me the problem, I expect it to be normal to use matching bolts(that have been tightened and haven't been rounded off or painted), washers, lock-tight nuts, the correct part for that model bike etc. Who puts in a new piston and leaves in the old warn out rings, bearing and pin?! I also expect dirt bike owners to have more in their tool box than a shifter and a hammer! ???

Anyway, with a few hours of TLC, I'll get her race ready.

The radiators on this are not the correct ones for this model. Has anyone had any experience with either of these or do you know of a better option?

Also the water pump is cracked but there are none to be found on eBay at the moment. Anyone have one or know where I can get one?

Bloody hell Ken sounds like you have a big job on your hands there gettin that one
up to race ready spec, hope it all works out for you because Lake glenbawn is only a few weeks away. :o
Dont worry this sort of stuff happens all the time when you buy new-secondhand  (race ready bikes) im goin
through the same sort of scenario with 2 of mine at the moment, the yamaha and the 89 500 ...
The yamaha was claimed to be race ready but only lasted one race then the crank went south :'(
and the 500 had a few missing parts namely radiator protectors and air filter plus the fly wheel cover had a
hole in it ...

That's pretty shitty to hear, if someone says a bike is 'race ready' I'd expect everything to have been rebuilt in the last couple of years, not just a new top end.

As for the CR250, was it a sight unseen ebay purchase?

Hi KJ, that doesn't sound like good news to me mate? Do you think it will be ready? Don't worry mate, I just got back with a YZ250L, which is a bucket of bolts too mate!!
