NOoooooo - ya gotta keep the original DT1 shape tank - and colours (al la Firko).
As much as I love your new DT1 project Iain, I have to agree with Graeme. The DT1 Yamaha's aura centres on its unique tank shape. If you remove that distinctive lump of mild steel the bike becomes 'just another dirt bike', unrecognisable from any other old bike.

I made a bad mistake in building my current Hindall DT1. In a rush to get it finished for CD8 I fitted a Wassell alloy tank, Wassle seat and period Preston Peddy 'Mudder' style mudguards. In the shed prior to finishing I thought the bike looked sweet but once out in the real world and on the trailer I realised that I'd made a bad tactical error. The whole dynamics of the bike were wrong, the tank too long, the seat and shocks too short and Preston Petty mudguards were still as ugly as they were back in the seventies and didn't suit the bike. Somewhere during the build I lost direction on the project and had been trying to create something similar to my polished alloy Cheney, a DT1 powered shiny Hindall, when what I should have been doing was to build a Hindall framed DT1.

To create that concept I've decided to rehash the bike using original DT1 parts to change the whole look of the bike. The Wassell tank is now on my Maico trials bike, replaced by a NOS AT1 Yamaha tank that'll be soon painted original Yamaha pearl white with black pinstripe. I also have a straight DT1 tank but the smaller all over AT1 version looks a little smaller and therefore neater without losing the distinctive shape (I think that may be an AT1 tank on Vandy's beauty). Gone are the plastic Preston Petty 'guards, replaced by a GYT Yamaha high front and 6" wide alloy rear...both painted silver as they were at the factory. The stock DT1 rear 'guard is too short (and heavy) to use on the Hindall frame so I'll paint the aftermarket alloy tank silver to fit the stock image. The dumpy Wassell seat is being replaced by a custom made replica of the one on my Cheney. As far as visual impact, just fitting the AT1 tank will change the whole appearance of the bike.....it'll be instantly recognisable as a DT1, the other more interesting things like the Hindall frame and Gary Jones handlebars will only become noticable when you look a little closer. The true trickness of the bike should creep up on you in a subtle way.

I'd put pictures up of the bike as it appeared at CD8 but I'm a little embarrassed that it turned out so....errr...ugly, especially when compared to my other bikes. When she comes back as a proper DT1, albeit with an aftermarket frame, I think you'll understand what I was trying to do and should hopefully like the finished product.

I fount by acident this week some yz style pit bike pegs that fitted on my DT1 and some arrow kart springs that work perfectly the things are subtle but wider under foot and snap back like a mouse trap.

Some time its the simple things that work and are so impressive.

If i was to make any comment i would say bail the side covers and maybe the fr guard etc. the bike looks kinda pointy andera bitsa.

its lost that fat pre 70 look.
kinda look more like a 73 MX 250 ??  and you have lots of them already

Ok after all that work on the tank , one thing I do have is DT1 tanks I think about 6 or 7 . How about white with a red stripe as on the works dt1 at Isle of mann 1970 , (page 33 Yamaha Dirtbikes by Colin Mackellar) with red front guard . Freaky the left side cover is dt2mx but the right side cover looks bad without a up pipe . I'm open to ideas for the front guard

The one with the blue and red stripes looks good and i like the old Preston Petty fenders  :)

What rear guards you using ?? vandy or iain......
MCS mini mudder.
about $30 bucks from the local bike shop
if they let you look through the MCS cataloge, you'll be able to work out the correct model/name/number for them.
i believe they used to be available in quite a few colours but may only be white now.
thats whats on the back of my blue one as picture by the pic hoarding Graeme ;D & should bolt straight onto that frame i did for you Freaky.

you can see the fenders in the online catalogue here www.mcsonline.com.au

the tanks Ok for a racer, but with all th eother pointy bits i see what firko is saying, you need to round off the other bits if you use a pointy tank

in that cataloge Freaky,
chapter 13,
the MX5 series ;)
and my tank is a DT/RT1 tank although the smaller AT/CT/LT style tank can be made to fit with a bit of a tickle 'n' slap and has the same look, slimmer with less feul for the serious racer.
i reckon the DT1 style tank is more "testicle" friendly ;) when compared to the DT2 style.
a blokes gotta think of these things :D

Ok gents Ive heard your thoughts on the DT1 tank , Had a think about it and your right . the tank on it at the moment is just to get the idea , the real tank is getting sprayed ,white with red stripe down the centre with the 68 red backed Yamaha tank badges. After listening to you lot the guards had to go . rear is a ? found it in my stash ,front is a mk 7 bultaco .
Sorry about the quality of the photos ,its dark out in the shed , Im not in Yamaico's league but Im having fun .

Very nice Iain, please keep us posted on the progress of this rebuild.
The rebuilds such as this and all the others on the forum help keep me sane, and chomping at the bit,to get into my bikes,if and, when I ever return home fulltime.
Keep it up guys,love it.

                                                                                   Cheers,Mark.
I used to drink a lot.
I still do,but I used to,too.
