So..Firko is going to hate me for this....so ...when you place this special into pre '75...where does the exhaust fit ..?? bearing in mind that the MOMS states that the exhaust "may be modified but must generally follow the original lines".....so which pre 75 maico has an upswept exhaust?...and which pre 75 Can-Am has an upswept exhaust...?....AND......the MOMS states that only a TNT Can-Am can be used....How can you prove that the donk is only a TNT..??..If Dave was eligibility scruitinering ..that presents as not compliant with pre 75... Over to you Firko...

My TNT had a pre fix of 6 on the headstock so people reckon it was a '76 build but it was visually identical in everyway to a '74 and the 250 engine didn't change I believe until '79 or so (stand to be corrected). It had a low pipe and Don Newell at the time said there was nothing illegal about it and Steve New owned/ran it before me including I think at Cherebah Oz titles.

For the life of me I can't remember who bought it from me, Gosso maybe? Jikov may remember, maybe you can copy that pipe and carb setup if the owner is willing, it worked very well.

Shit it was a brilliant engine btw, none better in it's day and awesome even by modern standards thats why it went unchanged for so many years, nothing but the best for snowmobilers!

Oh sorry Mate, just realized you are talking about your Camaico, thought it was about the later Can Am works bike with the up pipe.

The 74 Ossa I just bought has an up pipe as well. A period mod.

I'm not so sure Brad...I lived thru this era...I was 16 at the time and took in everything that moved with Motocross.... never saw a Phantom with an up pipe....you may believe it to be a period mod...but ...the MOMS does say that line about "generally following the original lines"....which an up-pipe does not...Now , I didn't make the rules ..(probably someone like Firko did back in the beginning of CMX)..they are there for everyone to follow...IF....you think that rule needs to be amended or deleted then there is a process.... Brad )or anyone) will probably need to come armed with some sort of advert showing the up-pipe being available prior to 1975.. At the end of the day..what we are all trying to do is re-create the era prior to 1965 , 70 , 75 and 78 et all...not adapt modern technology so that the bikes look nothing like they did when they were new...

Hi,
I 'm pretty sure that rule was made shortly after Darryl Lewis"s 74 Maico, at the Nats, can't remember the year, had a Honda CR250 "Fat boy" exhaust put on , wasn't so much a high pipe  but a mid pipe just above the ignition cover,
someone thought it wasn't Vintage enough.
cheers

Yes it's to stop the modern looking pipes being put on, such as the fatty style. Not a period looking one.

The up-pipe is a Mid-Valley CZ pipe for an Ossa Phantom.  They sponsored riders like Kenny Zahrt and Rex Staten.  It doesn't look as sharp a some of the modern pipes for these bikes, but it is pretty rare (I've only seen one other).
Jay, speaking of the Ossa I bought off him and the up pipe.

There was a CR125 with a Fat Boy pipe at Cherrabah that was frowned upon by many along with one that had a seat that went most of the way up the tank.

FWIW me too, John Burrows made Ossa's pretty popular in Melbourne and I drooled over the very few Phantoms I saw at race meetings and never saw an up pipe not to say they didn't exist.

Brian, you're being provocative you naughty boy ;D. That rule is dumb and has never ever been enforced to the letter of the way it's written. Of course you know that and are just trying to draw attention to a rule that seems to get under your skin. ;)
For what it's worth, you could buy Wheelsmith and AAEN Eng. up pipes for Maicos in 1974, maybe earlier. I've got one of each in my junk stash.

Mark, provocative??? ..No....but...the rule and its intention suit what we are doing nicely....it is the interpretation by some people that irks me....those up and thru the frame pipes ..particularly the ones to suit Huskys really get under my skin....has no real representation of the "era" we are trying to preserve and bear no resemblence to how the bikes where in the day......now where were we..oh yes Can-Ambulances....if anyone is interested I know where there is a genuine factory (used by Jimmy Ellis) up pipe for a Can-Am here in WA...

Mark, provacative...yes. ;)
If you followed that law to the nth degree as you seem to be wanting to, anyone who raced a DT1 fitted with a period downpipe, Maicos with period Wheelsmith up pipes, CZ's with period South Bay CZ snail pipes, XL Hondas with Powroll or any other aftermarket pipe, TS Suzukis fitted with kit pipes....and so on, the list is endless...would be scratched from the program. Half of the bikes in pre 75 such as Brads OSSA (above) would be illegal. As you keep telling us, if you have a problem with something in the rulebook, go to your club and mount a proposal to ammend the rule to what you think it should be. Whining about it on this forum every time you see a pipe you don't like achieves diddly squat.
Now that I've said that, I'm off to the shed to continue building the mouning brackets for the illegal DT1 Bassani pipe on my new project.  ;D

I just don't understand why people think that they are recreating an era when they turn up with a pipe like that....So...is it a better pipe ..does it produce more HP....make the power more usable...or....the real reason , is that bikes with down pipes were subject to damage to the exhaust..that is why Maico CZ Ossa all those guys went with the up pipe...ATM the MOMS says blah blah blah...If you want to use your up pipe ..( or down pipe)..get the rule changed...

You've missed my whole point. I'm talking about PERIOD pipes, not the fatty pipes that are freaking you out. Does that mean you'd protest a bike with what you perceive to be an illegal pipe who beats you out of a trophy Brian?

Methinks your efforts would be better served sorting out the dodgy Husky frame mods in your own playpen. ;D
