I still think a baby bonus in reverse would have worked.
A cash incentive to encourage people to reproduce was never going to end well, doing the opposite and encouraging people who are seriously desperate to not have kids (although you'd be crucified by so called liberationists) may well have worked much better.

This Liberal Government strategy which was a blatant attempt at buying votes backfired on them badly IMO, the very people they see as a burden they were encouraging to reproduce.
I am talking about this is general terms, not aimed at any particular race.

The point about the extreme left and right is spot on too, both extremes are as one eyed as each other. Although I identify more to the left, I can't for the life of me accept some of the ridiculous policies they have around protecting forests to such a degree which deems no usage for recreation.
Being a dirt bike rider who has a care for the environment is seen as an impossible juxtapose to many.

I agree on all points - although both our major parties are quite central and both still feel obliged to create restrictive legislation rather than deal with the issues intelligently.

My confidence in the idea has been shaken after interacting with some real nutters in the last week or so, but I believe that if either of the major parties stood back and said "You know what? We've been doing at it all wrong, and we keep making stupid, knee-jerk legislation and its helping nobody. Instead, we're going to only bother with the stuff that really matters - health care, education and the economy - and we'll get it right", then they'd be swept to power almost regardless of their political persuasion.
I guess Ruddy promised this (and was swept to power), but then failed to live up to the promise in the short term, and was undermined by the effect of his own personality within his party and his inability to deal with Abbott's incessant fear-mongering, before he had the opportunity on the longer term stuff.

Are we off topic enough yet?

Not at all  ;D 1.0971 right now

Yep, back on topic.
I'm pumped, have some very big transfers to do in U.S $ next week and was banking on getting even money a month or so back.
$1.10 is crazy, banks never give you that though, always lose a few cents and then the mongrels keep your money in limbo land for a few days (read short term money markets) to make themselves even more money.

Nathan, I think we'd all hope that a party with some decent far ranging policies and less BS would win voters, but in this day an age, reverting back to that, and actually admitting they'd made a mistake or two (and dumping a lot of the current crap) would see them publicly crucified.

It's ironic that everyone sits back and screams that they'd love an honest politician, yet if someone admits they are wrong or changes their mind (heaven forbid) in parliament, the media starts a massive beat up.
The day that people start to respect honesty in politics will be a good one. Though I was never a huge Rudd fan (saw him as very contrived, a control freak and an all round chameleon) one of his better qualities was admitting he got it wrong a few times, which IMO showed a lot of back bone.
Longer terms would probably benefit the country though, the current system means that by the time a party is in, they have little time to kick goals before campaigning about what they have done in need to get re elected.

In many ways it is a real pity Labour got rid of Rudd. He may well have scraped in even after the mining tax punt, and into a proper second term would have seen him get a bit done.

with any number of twists in between, your exchange premium is probably propping up someones credit card debt in Kansas even as we speak and has had 50 stops in between. I think Wasp mentioned something about a "Global reset button" .... when you create wealth without increasing production it is called inflation, but then again this whole economic situation is going where nobody has ever gone before and not following the rules goddammit.
