Good luck Pete, it;ll be interesting to see if Aussie ideas will work over there....it's intersting you saying that their setup doesn't always work here. Jonesy rode his ATK 604 Rotax that's set up for half mile at Nepean on the weekend and it proved to be a rocket but was way over carburetted (44 Mikuni) and it appeared to be over cammed for DT. Ron Wood originally built the engine so Al's going to talk to him about whether a softer tune, possibly a TT set up might help our track conditions. Give my regards to Bill

Thanks Firko, Jonesy is dead right, over carbed and cammed.I have been getting help with the XL500 project from Jeff Hawbaker (a mate of Pat Ormans) who has one of the fastest XL based mtrs in the scene over there, I emailed Jeff about the issues with maybe too much power and he said there is no such thing as too much.Funny thing is with that big carb and cam the engine is still brutal down low, not soft at all and will sit and idle, just has a big rush in the mid range ie too big.

Pete, mmcc have a practice day on 12th May. Action Park would be a good spot to test your US set up. It's a big ask due to the trek but I am sure you would be welcome. Here is some pit corner action, sweeper off the straight is bigger and faster.

Good luck OS.

Cheers,
Steve

The track, just as I remember it, contacted Nancy on FB, the explosion near Waco only 30 miles from Bill's place.

Funny....even though I've never been to Bill and Nancy's place I had an uncomfortable feeling that they lived near Waco.....I'M glad they're OK.

Have a terrific time Pete. Seeing that it's still in the USA, if my Shell 750 Yamaha had been fully assembled and hot to trot I would have had no problems letting you race it on your tour before my shipping it home.
Still, I guess you've got enough things to worry about without my adding to the mix  ::) .D Don't forget to keep us in the loop matey ;).

Thanks Firko, my new bike in Texas now thanks to the Flat track community in the US, a friend we met on our first trip bought the bike(using his money) for me, reconned if I didn't want it he would unload it as it was good buying.I wanted it! It's a Knight Honda 500 from Washington state, took a while but with a lot of help from travelling racers is now in TX.

That's a great looking Knight Pete but how old is that Goodyear mounted on the front? They haven't made them in years ::). Have you got a 750 ride this year?

A mate who sponsors National #42 Bryan Smith emailed me to tell me that there will be an AMA race on the 1.25 MILE , Colonial Downs track in Virginia in August. The speeds should be wild  ;D.
Here's my friend Joe's own ride, a J&M framed TT500.......             .

Will need plenty of luck! Have been busy the last few months building a quick XL500 here and testing it.
The tyres will be replaced, using Maxxis on the groove (clay) tracks and have 2 new trials radials (19'') waiting for the pea-gravel. The speeds on the mile tracks are insane, on an XL350 try going up 2 teeth on the front and down 6 on the back, on gearing you would use at Canberra. No 750 this year, will concentrate on the 500, I have its original engine plus the mtr I have made here (pictured) for the open classes, ended up spending far too much.
That is a beautiful Yamaha, they are the most popular vintage engine on the scene.
