Thanks Graziano. I had previously considered building the Cotton but decided on a Metisse instead. Now I've got a spare engine and a few different frames I'd like to build something different for pre 65...118kg sounds pretty good, it's lighter than me which is a good start!

It a works BSA.

One of six that were made by Eric.  The BSA factory commissioned him to make some light weight frames for their bikes.  This is one of them.

It is not like the Cheney Goldstar frame that you would buy today, it has lots of BSA bits on the frame.

It has a Pearson motor running on R and is set up for methanol.  It is seriously bloody quick!  I love firing it up in the garage.  The noise and small are magnificent!

Yes, they come from the Netherlands (ABSAF) in gift wrapped boxes to any spec you want!  They take 5 weeks from the date of order any spec you want

Yes they are available ~ at a price.  I have a set of cases on my bench. 

To be fair most people building a race motors wouldnt probably use an original set of cases.  There is no point from a cost point of view.  They would use the more readiliy available pre unit BSA cases and go from there.

A mate in Ireland recently build a new Cheney Goldstar and got bored of asking for help getting a motor together.  He was being offers scrap parts for mega bucks by people who really didnt want to let their set of orginal blown up cases, barrel missing 6 fins, head split in half  etc rare parts leave their shed.

One phone call later he had ordered a new motor to his spec.  5 weeks later it was in his new rolling chassis.

I will find a pic of the pic and try and post it.

The finished bikeis a thing of beauty.  Absolutley stunning..... and best of all he is going to race it!

The cases are pretty much identical.  Genuine Goldie cases are fewer in number, carry the wow factor and are consequently worth more.  So why use original ones that could be damaged when you don’t need to...?  I bet you couldn’t even tell the difference anyway.... (I couldn’t!)

I don’t think it in any way shape or form, makes it a lesser bike.

I don’t think using a set of cases that didn’t start life when they left the factory being called a Goldstar make it any less of a bike.  I am sure you wont be shocked to hear that some people actually changes the numbers on cases ~ shock horror!  How many std gearbox cases now have RRT stamped on them?  I bet there are more in existence today than were ever made! 

It's like when people get overly excited about having to have a set of B50MX cases for their CCM project.  Who'd want a set of shagged MX cases that have seen a hard life?  I'd go for a low hour set of B50SS cases any day.  By the time the motor has been built to CCM spec, the original number gone and a CCM bore x stroke number added what is the difference?  Not a lot in my book.

Same goes for having a shagged out XR500 motor vs a low hour XL500 motor.  Bugger all difference and by the time it has had all the goodies put in the motor it doesn’t matter anyway (in my book).... I'd want the low hour XL motor every time.

Original vs Replica is an age old debate.  It doesn’t really matter to me what it is.  Personally if it is quick, looks good & sounds great then I am happy.

But, if some one is saying it is something when it clearly isn’t (ie getting more money for it on the basis that it is a particular model etc etc) and intentionally not telling the truth, then that is not correct.  From what you have said this is not the case.  If you are happy with the bike and happy to pay the price, then get it.

Alison........most of the Metisses or Cheneys we see racing today are replicas but we don't have any problem calling them by their original name so why the worry about whether a replica Goldy engine should be called a Goldy? The pre 65 class couldn't exist without Pat French's replica Metisses or Simon's replica Cheneys so if having a Dutch Goldy puts another bike on the track it's a good thing. Being snobby about these things isn't a good look ;D

In this case its all good,but there are those out in the vmx world who continue to add the big price label and sell bikes to unsuspecting buyers.  :(
The buyer buying for all kinds of reasons ,one as you stated ie:if it is quick, looks good & sounds great then I am happy.Also the seller himself may not be aware of the parts being replica etc.
I suppose we can't do much about these sellers though and some will continue to sell till days end.
I have questioned some sellers on bikes originalty and price tag while putting in an offer on a purchase.Suppose this should be chalked up as sales etiquette and perhaps just say nothing ?

Bought some "dutch" goldy stuff its good and after 1 month of adds had cases - barrel ansd Head from auz and Unzud.

Hey Bazza there was some 350 Gold star stuff on trade me/ it was core unit minus the core  ;D

Anyways entering the old replica debate, the ABSAF engine is in the Goldstar replica category but arguably a Summerfield Manx isn't given that they own the legal right to build Manx engines. Albeit that the Summerfield Manx has benefitted from another 20 years of development and vastly improved metalurgy.

I think finally replicas are great for racing, the Summerfield Manx's got riders like Bazza, Schwantz and Wayne out there, not to mention you have replica MVs, Patons, Gileras and other exotica which keeps things colorful and not a bunch of black and white photos of guys in funny helmets/

Alison,  it seems to me by the tone of your post that you think that a replica is somehow inferior or dodgy. I reality, the ABSAF and all of the Norton and Matchless replica manufacturers are making infinitely better quality products, mainly due to better merallurgy and years of development as Marc pointed out. You'd be very brave to race a genuine Goldy, Manx or G50 in serious competition because of the stresses built up in old castings and components over the last 50 years. Of course it you're wanting a matching numbers rally bike or garage queen, nothing can replace originality. For racing...give me a replica any day.

Of course if money is any object you would probably be best to avoid the whole specialist Brit bike thing/. Its specialist market where most people involved are quite well set up and they charge accordingly.
