the hairline cracks are a worry, are you sure they are cracks and not casting marks? if the grooves are not too bad you can file them out/down carefully and get some more life out of the basket. uncommon for a 500 to have them i would think as it is usually the way with 125's and 250's (fanning the clutch ) yours may have done a lot of work maybe.

aftermarket baskets are available (Hinson is another brand) but pricey.

do you have a pic to post of the basket?

OEM price would at a guess be $600-700.

sorry hoony no pics...i forgot there was another reason why i had it apart..the kickstarter return spring wasnt on the shaft..when id kick her over she wouldnt pop back in its place..so i decided to just fix that and slap it all back together and see how it goes..the clutch cable was completely stuffed too,the owner had a joiner half way along it cable tied together so i chucked that one out and put a new one in its place ..that might get rid of the chugging also :-\ just super keen to get another ride on her again....but i know for a fact i will have to get a new clutch basket....$600-$700 for a oem no way.... :o

i like the boysen flywheel cover hoony..makes it look real factory  8)..that spring you have on the shock looks like its aftermarket...is it a white power job... i might have to get some part numbers off you soon too from that book..ive gone over the 500RF and ive found a few things that need replacing, ill have too start hunting down...when the 84 is finished of course... :)

i bought the boysen cover because its metal and not plastic like the standard one, yes the shock is a white power.

no worries with the part numbers andrew, email me or phone me when you are ready mate.

G'day Woody, yeah i reckon the fork seal wipers are better than the boots. 43mm wipers i have on mine are OEM Yamaha 1986 YZ250S Part # 1LX-23144-LO but beware the Yamaha part is $36 each and they are a single item so order 2.

as for the stuff on Ebay thanks for thinking of me but i have that stuff already. i think there may have been an OEM owners manual for your 83' bike there a week or so ago.

Hey Tony, err Andrew  ;D no cracks in 86' frame i got it on ebay ex usa over a year ago, i had lots of pics to view before i bought it, it is very low hours, hardly any scuffs from boots etc, i assume it was a donor bike for the engine only. as for its history i do not know. mine could have been repaired and still can be and i am sure yours can be as well.
