Awesome DR500 hybrid

Read this on MX Trax forum what a great bike and well thought out!

well the wheelbase is the same as a kx500 as for the frame it is made of the following, head stock and under tank is 1984 maico 250, down tubes are 490 maico, where the swing arm meets the frame is 84 250 maico ,under the seat is 1983 490 yam, as is the plastics and seat, the rest of the frame is made by kev bratt, he has done an awsome job of making it all fit together, the engine is a suzuki DR500, carb is rmz250, foot peg hangers are yzf 250 and foot pegs are white brothers titanium for an rmz 250. yokes are husky/cagiva with a modified kxf stem, forks are non adjustable drum brake wp 4054 from a ktm 495 as is the front wheel, i have a 1980 490 maico front end too, the front pipe is part bratt and part yzf250, rear is a titanium arrow pipe from a yzf450.swing arm is husky 610 2000 model with bushes made by neil jones. rear suspension is maico geometry with new ohlins for a maico.rear wheel is yz465 with spacers made by neil jones and the rear brake and a shortend torque arm are from a 1983 yz490 and it has a hydraulic clutch for a crf 450 and the seat cover and graphics by MXM. few there you go, i can't thank kev enough for a sterling job i am well pleased with it i'm just doing some final jetting it runs great but i think i can maybe go a bit larger on the main jet. first outing for a test on a track is next sunday

Interesting but would it suit a class here I think the 610 Husky swingarm would rule it out of all our vintage classes wouldnt it? Would be a good bike to go head to head against the moderns though.

Dr 500 motors are Bloody heavy units, But are bullet proof and pull like a tractor.
Yes- well thought thru but has too many Modern parts to race evo in Oz .     eg ... upside down forks

I don't understand why you'd put the upside down forks on but not run a front disc depends what it was used for if it were for trail riding I'd have a disc front end for sure.

The bloke's obviously put some thought and hot rod ingenuity into the bike but that DR lump drags it back a bit. It'd be OK with TT500/XR500 power but it's his baby and I admire his spirit. Perhaps it'd fit our forthcoming pre '90 class or change the swingarm and forks to something period and perhaps it may fit into Evo.

that would be pre 85 legal (if he used a oldeer swing arm ) those are the 84 ktm wp forks arnt they making the forks pre 85 legal

You better check the rulebook buddy.. It says Modifications converting later equipment to comply will not be allowed.
Something a lot of people have trouble understanding.

Its a nice job but were does it fit. For Pre 85 4 stroke buy a Rotax KTM as for twin shock evo I dont think the forks fit the era.
I have owned a DR 500 rather nice bike for dirt roads and light trails but they wieght more than a blacksmiths anvil.

Can't see the top and bottom of the forks, but they look like 1984 spec KTM. The swing arm conversation is interesting as I am trying to get it sorted in my mind what the difference is between modifying a late model swing arm and buying an aftermarket swing arm made in 2010 that is not a copy of somthing that was made in the evolution era.

I think that the reason why he built it is because they have a twinshock fourstroke class in England, where I presume that the rules are basically : aircooled fourstroke, drum brakes & twinshocks . Sounds like a good class, but I think that an '84 Husky 510 would have to be the dominant bike .
