THE 414
« on: April 29, 2010, 06:34:51 pm »
This is the bike that started it all off for me (with the 414's). The 1979 VE 414.
Not a very 'attractive' bike. It's got a face that only a mother could love. But I reckon' they're the toughest looking motocrosser of all time (including your fancy works bikes).
If you were racing in Western Victoria in 1979 and Peter Christian rolled up to the line beside you on one of these I think you'd have just pooed your pants, packed up and gone home.

Anyway here's my new addition. It looks pretty rough but I think it's done bugger-all work.
Heaps of compression and the motor spins over freely like the other low hour VF that I have. The bloody thing even started when I got it home! ;D

Of course some 'knob' has welded a different gear lever to the shaft and put a bolt into the carb slide adjuster... ???

Pipe doesn't have a knick in it. Lots of surface rust and mufflers ok as well (even has the packing in it).

Levers and covers are all OEM

Has all the original cables with the little lube points in them. Even the throttle cable which I've never seen. Has the original front plate.

I reckon' it's gunna turn out just GROUSE!

Special thanks to "Pauls Bike Brokerage Service" for securing the vehicle. ;)

The last pic is just for Montynut
My 'vg' ;)

are those levers bent identically on purpose ?

Is this the current project or in a queue?

That's the bend of the levers alright. I can honestly say that these bikes (Monties) just don't seem to work properly with any other type of lever!

It is the current project. Should be pretty straight-forward as I have most of the bits here that need to be replaced. Strip, sand-blast, paint, re-assemble and Bob's your Aunty's Milk Man. ;)
