I know how you feel. I tried to buy a bike from California a couple of weeks ago. Trying to export to the UK without a "title" is a nightmare. To have a title it has to have a VIN number. Unfortunatly, the bike never came with a VIN number as it was imported as a frame kit. If you don't have a title you need a bill of sale and a manufacturers statement of origin. Can't get one of those either as the company folded in 85!! The owner took the bike off e-bay with an hour to run. He decided to have a re think but may still sell it.

Anyone have any ideas? I have heard of a company in the US that will collect, strip and send a bike as parts but I can't find them on the web.

There are loads of nice bikes in the states but few are titled. Without all the correct paterwork your stuffed.

In NZ or Aussie you can just declare it as an off road motorcycle and you are in, parts have various tax regimes depending on how friendly the people are at customs.

The only way to get around the title problem is to have the bike sent in boxes as parts. I've seen it done many times!

you gotta win it on ebay first which is no easy deal esp for things like a early yz.I reckon Mark's swapmeet is a better option with plenty of good bikes. This has been covered before but I believe you can source a bike through DDR in Brisbane or they will ship it for you if you find one for yourself. You are going to pay for it but unless you've got a contact over there its the only way. Also Shoreline Motorcycles also in Brisbane may be able to help.Prices in the US are starting to pick up a bit recently but the Oz$ is still pretty strong and is going to increase in value against the US$ so its a good time to buy.

I've been shipping bikes from the USA for 10 years and have never had a title problem. I always have the engine removed and sent seperately in its own box which efectively turns the shipment ito 'spare parts', not a complete bike requiring title. Until recently a bill of sale was good enough but they've tightened up the regs to try and prevent stolen stuff getting out of the country.
Shortshifter is right that Marks Swapmeet is quite a good alternative to eBay. The last couple of bikes I've bought have come via Marks. Just yesterday I bought a pair of NOS Arnaco shocks for $90 +$30 shipping while the best recent price I could get on eBay was $130 + shipping. There are some good honest blokes on the Swapmeet as well. It's got a forum style vibe about it and a good feedback if anyone gets screwed. They were the first to out the notoriously dodgy Todd Applegate. He's now banned on eBay as well.

I looked at that bike till about $3k on the of chance it didnt hit what he wanted this time around ( he was pitching 4-5K pre sold , the seller was fine and i had already checked he would box up.  Shipping was no issue.

Like they said first check they will box up, second you have to win it,  the rest is fairly predictable.

Mick, I got it wrong. The dodgy guy that was outed on the swapmeet is Todd Appelgate. Brendan is OK to my knowledge, runs a wrecking yard of sorts. I bought some Maico stuff from him a while ago, dealt with his missus who's a bit of a honey from memory. Todd Appelgate advertises bikes he doesn't own, and has left many a punter high dry and bikeless.http://www.vintagemx.us/message_board/viewtopic.php?t=1516

This is a classic example of getting it wrong and having good reason to delete the wrongful post.

Todd Applegate did everyone over for years

Is that really true that he is or was in jail for his scams and ripping people off? The scary thing was i knew about him for a few years before i was contacted by him and guess what i didnt not even know it was him till quite some time after.  Its was a bit weird, i didnt really know what he wanted but i was lucky enough to not A) buy anything from him or B) sell anything to him and it ended at that. It was only last year sometime when somone posted his address on a forum and then i though s%$& ive had emails from this guy before and didnt even know it was him and everyone had been saying to watch out for him. I feel real lucky because i reckon i was so close to being taken for a ride. i think the americans dislike him more than us though, he always gets a bad mention on the forums over there.

As for shipping from Italy, try this forum http://rugginose.forumfree.it/ You gotta jump through hoops to get on there and introduce yourself before you can get approved so its a little tricky but once your on its fine. Theres a section for international english reading only people to read first and it explains things. You also need to make sure you got your cookie settings right otherwise the website wont work properly. It took me ages to work out how to sign up on there.
