Some people should not be allowed near bikes!

This morning I went around to a bloke I know and picked up a dogs breakfast of a1981 IT175 Yamaha that he had in the back of his shed. He is not responcible for the condition of the bike, it was like it when he got it.



Now those who are knowedgable in 1980's dirt bikes might pick that the IT is fitted with a set of Honda CR front forks and wheel. This is were things get ugly. The Honda forks are 37mm dia. where as the Yamaha clamps are meant for 36mm forks.



But there is no problem that you can't solve with an angle grinder!!!

Fortunatly, I only bought the pile of crap so I could strip the rear shock and swingarm out of it to use on the XT250 that I am modifying for enduros. I will sell the rest of the bits of at the local swap meating next month if I am lucky.

That one is pretty rad.... For the sake of 0.5mm, I'd have thought that a bit of emery paper on a drill would have been a lot less dodgy for the same amount of effort.

The IT swingarm won't fit a two valve XT250, the 1978 YZ250 is the only direct bolt-in fit that I know works. Plus the right side drive rear wheel setup on the IT swingarm would made conversion a challenge too.

Ah, yes. YZ400F swing arm goes pretty close to working in an XT250, but requires some very careful attention to wheel/swing arm spacers and rear wheel offset.

Cyclegod, you are spot on, I had a measure, and realised it wouldn't bolt straight in, but I know a very good machinist, and with his help it should possible to make it slip right in. Of course if all else fails, I have an angle grinder!

As for the rear wheel, I have been thinking of my option, and a crossover shaft is probably a bit to much work, so I am looking at converting to cable operation to solve the problem of the brake being on the wrong side.

I was just having a look at the beast to check some details, and the carbie fitted is a 32mm KEIHIN, so I presume that it may have came from the same Honda as the front end.

I bought a TY250B (34mm forks) that had been fitted with 35mm Betor forks and the clamp holes had been enlarged using a round file, and the tubes were stuck in place with loctite (to fill in the gaps?)
