1983 KX500 (e-bay market trend)
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:14:22 pm »
Perhaps I am reading to much into this, but this bike would have fetched 50% more than what it sold for 6 or so months ago.
The auction was set up with all the right points, ie: ending on a midweek day and at a reasonable time etc yet only attracted one (1) bid, the winning bid.
Given that all the plastics would be replaced and the engine stripped and freshened, the bike is pretty good for what is there.
So what's the story?
- Has the arse dropped out of the market?
- Are the air cooled KX500's no longer desirable?
- Is it really a case of the doom & gloom of the financial crisis?

The KX500 aside, this CanAm Sonic
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280463067255&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
didn’t even get a bid with a starting bid of $2000, and i thought these bikes were very collectable.

This RM250 was even more of a surprise given that the starting bid was $1000 and it didn’t even get a bid.

And for a light hearted look at these machines, I can see why this didn’t sell;

i think its a bargain ;)
i think the market has slowed a bit
having said that if it was a cr500 84  it would sell easy ::)

And it gets even more difficult to understand.
The Can Am Sonic that was advertised earlier this week
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280463067255&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
and did not recieve a bid at $2000 has been re-listed as
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280466032636&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
with a starting bid of $3500.
Understanding they are different auctions, if it didn't get a bid at $2000 then why would it get a bid at $3500 under a new auction?

Yeah that happens a bit quite funny but you see alot of bike with reserve it is a silly way to start them if I ever sell I never place a reserve because it is so much simpler for every one if you just start at what you want and any more is a bonus even 1 bid is fine reserve just complicates things.

And the RM500 that was originally advertised as
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110491217629&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
and did not meet reserve with 23 bids upto $5100 has now been relisted as
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110495418426
with a starting price of $1000.
I would have thought $5100 was above market value in the 1st place. What would this bike be worth in todays market?

Hi Bahnsy,  Good Restored Open Class VMX'ers get AUD$3500.00 - AUD$5000.00 and are generally worth what the owner has put into it.  Depends how much you want it,  whether it is a keeper,  or if you just want something race ready.  This RM500E,  is definately worth $3500K+ if the bore is small.  I have paid $5K for something worse....

Dont get me started on reserve's.
The amount of people that put a starting price on an auction then talk up the sale in the auction blurb that it is a "No Reserve" auction.....What the?
A starting price is a reserve is it not?

You couldn't be more right on the reserve I dont think I would ever consider buying a bike someone else has done purely because there is something about rebuilding the bike yourself more enjoyable to ride more satisfying knowing you put in the hard yards to do it yourself I have bought 1 bike of ebay bitsa mt250 it is good when you sell on it but hard to buy from it is much better when someone says I have this I want that.
