Wanted / Re: Honda SL70 frame

Maybe I could.... My projects just seem to take too long....

I'll try and remember to take photos of the build and see what I can do.

Yes, I have seen them from time to time. The postage cost has always put me off...
I can't find any at the moment, so I'll keep watching.
Thanks for reminding me.

Wanted / Re: Honda SL70 frame
« on: June 01, 2020, 02:03:46 am »
Just another update: stop looking for wheels and guards - got them! I also found a seat, but it is a) off an XL70 - slightly different shape - and b) totally turned to swiss cheese.... tried cleaning off al rust and attempted very carefully welding and brazing holes shut, but there just isn't enough metal left to make that work. So I decided to make a buck and some formtools and make a replica from flat steel instead. I think I can get it to match a good one I have on my first SL70K1, my current grandkids' bike. The rubber cushion of the XL seat will be able to be shaped to SL form and I'll sew a new seat cover in any case.....
Just about have all the bits for a K0 now. Lots of restoration work left to do: replating spokes and all bolts and nuts, hydroblasting all engine cases and some parts, checking all engine bits for wear etc. etc.
Frame is cleaned repaired and in for powder coating already.

Wanted / Honda SL70 frame
« on: February 29, 2020, 07:55:14 pm »
Hi all.
I'm looking for a Honda SL70 frame and any frame bits I can get (wheels, guards, seat base, that sort of thing).
ANY condition. A long shot of course, but you never know what people have under the workbench or behind the shed....
Cheers,
Joe

Wanted / Re: Wanted: 19" alloy rim with 36 spoke holes
« on: April 08, 2019, 10:22:08 pm »
I found a 1.6x19" alloy rim yesterday at the Castlemaine swap meet. It has only 32 holes, but I think I might be able to lace it up leaving 4 spoke holes empty in the hub... Should work - with slightly variable spoke lengths. I'll give it a try anyway... Might even put up a photo here when I'm done to see if it is obvious or not.... :)

Hi Barra. Thank you very much for looking for me! The wheel will be mounted with a 2.5x19 trials tyre. I think 1.85 is a bit too wide.
Having said that, if I don't find anything narrower (1.6 or 1.4) I'll get in touch. There is no hurry at all.
Cheers,
Joe

Thanks Momus, another avenue to pursue I didn't know about. Cheers.

Thank you very much for the offer, jimg1au. I have a couple of steel ones too. Just a bit heavy - and I have an alloy rear one. Just would like them matching...

Still no luck - sadly. Postage of a new one is prohibitive from anywhere outside of Oz.
Still hoping someone has an old one lying under the bench somewhere....

Bike Talk / Re: Pre 90's

I'm quite fond of our XL250S, actually.... It ALWAYS starts first kick, even after a few months sitting there.... Handles well according to the period, of course. Mostly fun because of it's reliability though.

Twinshock Trials / Re: Attempting to build a trials CT110 with grandkids
« on: February 20, 2019, 11:26:04 pm »
Yep, I'd already found those links. Lots of ideas and info there.
We do actually have a Lifan 125 engine with clutch here as well (needs 2nd gear fixed). But the Honda will probably be the first engine we try.
No progress as yet, but collecting bits and ideas. Oh, I did make the top of the in-frame tank the other day. It gives it a bit of a more modern look and strengthens the CT backbone. Not welded on yet, in case I have to adjust the headstock angle. I can't measure that until we get wheels and suspension trial fitted.
I'll keep this thread going - just don't hold your breath waiting for updates :)
Cheers,
Joe

They are here on their MX bikes most weekends..... but they keep building trials-type hurdles with logs and pallets and riding up and down the dam embankments and stairs in the gardens... even doing tight circles on top of the water tank (partially in-ground).
In any case, the idea is NOT to spend too many of grandpa's $s :)
Love the look of the TLM50! I didn't know they made that.
The 9 year old also really likes my SL70 I restored a few years ago. I let them ride that a bit, seeing they have never come off ... and they know what it's worth :) Good thing there is nothing I can't fix on that should they ever drop it - fingers crossed....

Oh yes. First place I looked. Checked every single alloy rim in the entire yard - took ages :)
I got the rear rim from him (17 x 2.15) and tyres. He has a lot of weird and wonderful stuff there....
