Tech Talk / Re: Non VMX - Brake advice needed
« on: February 20, 2013, 01:59:26 PM »
The inserts are just to stop brake pad squeal. When pads are harder they squeal more and usually that's the front (floating disc or larger disc). The rear is smaller and usually softer pads (or warms up quicker!).

Don't worry about it.

Most parts still available except gearbox bits. NLA!

These gear box parts are harder to find than an honest polly!

Not sure if this model had 4 or 5 speed but both gears sets are rocking horse poo rare!

Vinduro / Re: Weipa Croc Run
« on: January 26, 2013, 11:33:23 PM »

I reckon the story is getting there. The Croc Run itself is great and the flaming wheelie bin races outside the pub after are hysterical but the real fun is getting there (and home).

The road to Cook Town then was all dirt, dust and hard work.

I think the stories from ADB sowed the seed for me in the early '80's. It took until 1994 for me to get there. Three mates including DG26 all brought Honda Dominators to ride around Australia. They left 6 weeks before us. Bill Pengilly from Penrith and myself drove from Sydney to Townsville and parked my ute at a relatives place. Bill riding a 1983 IT250 and me on an XR600.
Met the others at Mareeba and headed North the next day. On the tar Bill (67 at the time) was only good for 80km/h and we all thought that Cook Town was going to be a week to get there. Once we hit the dirt he was happy to sit on 100 plus.

Young Bill and always a gentlemen.

1994 there were only about 18 entrants. Pretty sad really. XR600’s aren’t the toy to play in the mud with! Day one was pretty flat so to make it interesting the FNQ boys cut a track that took you over 10k’s of fallen trees (over a 100 of them easy) and 5k’s of the marbles they mine to make aluminum. Day two was just mud, vines and mud. Great stuff for light bikes not big tanked XR’s!

The trip north to the tip was the 5 of us, a bloke we met in the caravan park riding a GS800 BMW and 3 locals. One 4wd with our gear, food and petrol, the other towing a bloody great petrol powered fridge full of beer. 5 day trip to tip from Weipa to Weipa cost us $300 plus beers drunk. Great value really.

We left the mates in Weipa after they got 6 weeks work there and traveled south with the BMW. There were a lot of funny stories from this trip, but one of the last ones was about 10k’s from the car in Townsville at a set of traffic lights Bill was easing away very carefully. The IT was struggling to go forward. It only had one tooth left on the front sprocket! Almost 4000k’s on that front sprocket and Bill was still smiling while he tighten the chain that last little bit.

We found the Bridge after Don drown his bike in the near by creek and tried to convince us it only 12" deep!

Don packed with everything!

I'd do it all again tomorrow if I could!

Bike Talk / Re: Frankenstein, 1984 CR125 with an 81 XR200 engine
« on: January 14, 2013, 08:05:35 PM »
In 1992, whilst working at the 6 days in Cessnock , one of the workers had a multi hybrid CR/XR/XL that was actually registered (as a XL185).
If I remember correctly, it started as a XL185, then grow a big bore XR200 top end, then rebuild again with big cam and piston, then went into a stock CR125 frame, then worked the suspension, To cap it off he made all this stainless stuff to bling it up.

Sure on the transport sections it would have been a dog but I was told once he got to the single track everyone was minced.

I'll never forget the sound when he started it up. The crack in the exhaust was very similar to the moderns now. Sure it cost him a bomb, but fun was in the making it and making it go.

Would I do one of these Frankensteins, in a heard beat! Most of the fun is in the dreaming!

Not a 100% sure but I think tapers may be different size.

The simplist change over is a DT250 / 400 (I run a DT250F flywheel and stator) and YZ400D CDI.

You'll find more of these anyway. IT, DT and YZ from 1977 to 1978 and DT's up to about 1982'ish fit and run great.

General Discussion / Re: anyone use a container for storage
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:03:53 AM »
Jim

Have the container off the ground, must be a steel floor, at least one but better with two lower vents (vermin proofed) and one wirrly gig at the top. Make sure the air can get around soft storage (seats vinyl and foams etc) and make sure the water does not pool on the roof so put some slight angle to allow to drain.

I have two 40' for storage of construction materials (over 10years) and have no problems, even with cement bags.

Good luck

I thinks it same kit as the DT125/175.

Prox sell a rod kit of there are plenty of cheap kits out there. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-DT125-DT125MX-Piston-Connecting-Rod-/290779424155?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b3cde59b

They look the part but the Strokes a bit short !!!

Working Stroke: 68mm. The little advantage DT1 / RT1 rear end have you may only get 80mm of travel and not the 4" I'm after.

Tech Talk / Fixing dings in the side of a fork leg!
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:39:07 PM »
Hi All

Is there any one in the Sydney area who can fix a fork leg where something has banged up against it? There are 4 or 5 little dings mid way on one side which is now stopping the leg from sliding up and down on my YZ400D.

Alternatively, has anyone got a set of forks (YZ250D / YZ400D) where the chromes gone and not really usable but the bottom legs seem OK?

Any help appreciated

Regards

Yamaha / Re: Pre 75 Yamaha Trans Conversions

Tahitian

Just done the swap, MX360 gear set into RT2 bottom end. The MX360 has a longer clutch shaft. You need the MX250 gear set. So mine is actually running the original 1 gear and close ratios for the rest. (I have ordered that MX250 clutch shaft for the next tear down.)

The only change you need to do is use the original 4th gear cog that slides using the shift fork. The original MX gear set has a larger area fork slot. This was done before beers!!!!! Nearly started cutting grinding bit realised that they are exactly the same part (size and gear teeth). This way you use the original RT1 fork as the MX for in very much different. MX360 is the closer set with the longer shaft.

Good luck with it and PM me if you need more information.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone know a decision maker in the NSW RTA?
« on: September 01, 2012, 05:14:57 PM »
Ken
The other way would be to ask/apply for a home built trailer VIN number.
Your were allowed to build one or two a year yourself before having to get the right credentials to build trailers.

Not sure if this is still the way but this was from their web page today!. See form below .

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/publicationsstatisticsforms/downloads/45071142.pdf

The RTA will issue you a VIN with this form. I'd certainly make sure there was no other numbers stamped into the A frame. If there's not then all should be good.

What does the trailer weigh?
