Tech Talk / Re: Twin shock rear suspension set-up?!!!
« on: June 10, 2013, 08:49:57 PM »
The shocks are brand new from a well known dealer.
The spring rate was discussed at purchase and suggested springs installed. It was also advised by seller to buy the better type of shock for a number of additional benefits.

The thing is that I have been running around on a set of 1972 Yamaha shocks on an AT1 for 4 years now and they are still almost perfect for that bike. The RT1 has now had 3 different set on it, the first set where stuffed Yamaha ones (possibily from a CT1), second set where $75 imports that was just for sorting the rest of the bike out. I crushed the top eye on both sides (they weren't steel) after 2 races and as a mental note they definitely seem to offer zero damping anyway. The third set were not cheap but not a $1000 either. I'm certainly not a complaining customer (was told of pitfalls at time of selection), just dissapointed that I have to actually fine tune something that I would ordinarily take for granted would work out of the box. Unreallistic I know! It does seem obvious now that the rebound is way off, so I'll pull them down shortly and have a play.

However, I am struggling with the static / dynamic sag settings for older twin shocks. I know sag validates the spring rate (soft or weak) but with only 4" of wheel travel, I really don't want 1" taken up when sitting my fat as* on the seat!

It is a black art and a huge time taker to get right. Any helpful points taken with great respect at stage.

I'm having a very similar problem with the suspension on my RT1.
New shocks with the second lowest rated variable springs. I'm getting about 10mm to 12mm of sag combined and about 4mm static.
The shocks pack up hard after the second wop and is terrible to ride for the next 30 seconds until the springs unload!
I'm planning for less rebound but I don't think the spring rate is anywhere near right!

What are the right measurements for a set of shocks with 80mm of travel????And is going after less rebound before springs the right (or wrong) way to go?

Yamaha / Re: CT1 Piston
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:32:06 PM »
The DT1 is a 250cc motor, given the engine number, is a DT2 (I think) with a reed valve. The CT1 is a piston port, CT2 are windowed piston reed valve motor.
250 and 175 pistons (reed valve) a still available and are still via yamaha or evilbay. Wiseco Pistons for DT175A or DT250A would work (in the right engine)!

Wanted / Re: Wanted: Yamaha RT-3 parts.
« on: May 30, 2013, 12:17:22 PM »
Hi Joel

You can spread your net a little wider, the part is similar for DT2-3 as well as RT 2-3. (MX250 MX360 also)

The output shalf is a very common part and there are plenty on evilbay US.

Where are you located?

Wanted / Re: '77 YZ frame
« on: May 07, 2013, 10:28:03 PM »
You may even be able to salvage the main parts of the frame out of an IT250 / 400 D or E. I think they just had an extra brace and the rear loop for the tool bag.
The yz400D & E and the YZ250D basicly have the same frame.

The gasket paper will do the job as long as you take your time cutting it.

Good luck with it Graeme.

Yamaha / Re: YZ 400D fork oil capacity

The book says 182mm but you should run it up a bit higher. I have mine set at 135mm and it's a bit too firm. I'll soon drop it to 145mm which I think will work better. 15w oil.

Teknik go as high as 130mm from their webpage but I'd try the 145mm first. Good Luck!

Wanted / Re: YZ250-E
« on: April 02, 2013, 01:18:33 PM »
Brendan
The 250E has the small case motor, 6 speed box, longer underhang on the fork legs, different barrell (same piston), different electronics and stator, slightly lighter, different frame, air cleaner and the obvious, different swing arm.

They share with the 250D, rear shock, seat, tank, wheels and brakes.

The YZ400D and E are identical in most things except for forks and swing arm.

Wanted / Re: Yamaha IT490 gearbox parts
« on: March 14, 2013, 04:30:21 PM »
Bruser

Common blow up in the 465/490's is 3rd gear. NLA anywhere world wide via Yamaha. Both the YZ's and the IT's have that one gear in the cluster in common
Second hand will be very hard to find also. I know of a bloke who end up fitting a 250 motor until he found the parts in USA only to blow 3rd gear again 6 months.

Good luck.

I think things changed in the 4 days after one of the rider died in Queensland (1994 or 1995) from dehydration. Everyone came back to NSW with seized or broken bikes either from the dust and the rocks or broken bodies from just the dehydration. I'm told the temp was in the 40's by 10am on either day 1 or 2.

Bring back the old bikes, the speed tests, the real Bellstaffs and the innocence (and stick them in the current day A4DE). And show'm real men and not boys on modern lounge chairs!

eBay Finds / Re: ATK 406 on Swapmeet
« on: February 24, 2013, 06:16:08 PM »
This series of ATK's where out there. Disc on the counter shaft, parallel chain rollers, brake pedal reversed. Outside the square thinking stuff that worked but was considered too out there. And it was out there. I liked every part of it!

ATK 504 or was it 604 really pushed the envelope in the design department. Single side frames later on got me!

I'd have this one in a minute!
