Title: Whos going to Broadford at Easter
Post by: fatboyracing on March 27, 2009, 05:37:46 pm
Whos going to Big Banaza at Easter all the people that were coming with me from Tassie have now chickened out and I will be needing someone to drink with ;D Surely I will find a couple of blokes who like a beer as much as me. Looking forward to it.

Cheers

Well, they can't have been to committed then, can they. You're kidding bud, you'll rustle up some drinking buddies in about 20 mins flat I'd reckon. Make sure you sneak over the hill to the roadrace circuit, to avail yourself of the wail of the 250 Honda 4 paraded by 1969 World 250 champ Kel Carruthers, one of the sounds of the last century. Enjoy your weekend.  ;)

Sadly I cant make it to CD6 but will be at the Nats, I would love to come to NZ for a race .I will be going to the road race track as I am planing on taking my K2 750/4 for a few laps around the track.

It would have been nice for the tassie guys to make the effort to come along but anyway I will fly the flag for tassie and Fatboyracing

see ya all soon make sure you look me up for a drink  ;D ;D

Not sure Mick, a fair slice of the budget will be going into the Husky for the winter, and awaiting some clarity on the future of the job, but the Morgan Park track looks a blinder for classics, so am intending to ride Nats, Broady for Southern Classic, and Phillip Island Classic again, like this summer. Really was too much fun to be legal..... :D

Everything is up in the air for me. My wife has very inconsiderately had a 'mini stroke', irregular heart beat and palpitations ::). It been treated with medications (drugs) but there is a whole range of tests and doctors visits to get things right.

I want to go but probably won't make the decision until the night before ::).

Sorry to hear that, Hope the wife is recovering well MX250.
Thanks Hoony, just life at the sharp end hey!  :-\. Everything is going well, symptoms were recognized and treated early, Diane is a good patient and we have top cover and the best care with HCF 8). It's kept us poor over the years but it pays off at times like this. But even so there can still be $200 gaps in the fees ::). One quack we went to had a fee 3 times the schedule fee :o. I don't interfer, Di gets the best when it comes to health ;).

But it's a reminder for all of us - life is short, life is fickle; get in and live each day to the max ;D. And that's the balance I have to strike in this case - be available for Di and still keep my own life and interests. I have to err towards Di but I'll keep my opportunities open to the last moment. Hope to see all of you down there, with or without a bike, with or without my riding gear ;D.

May you live in interesting times ;D.

There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for the Bonanza on the forum. I remember the lead up to CD5 last year was almost a frenzy and thought the Bonanza would incite some similar exitement. Is it the economy holding people back or is there something else I'm missing? I was considering going for a look but I haven't spoken to one person who's committed to go. What's the score?

Post by: Graeme M on March 30, 2009, 04:19:09 pm
I don't have time or money enough for both, regardless of economies. So, I have to choose one or the other, and for me CD6 gets the nod. I have been to all except one Classic Dirt events and have no intention of missing any more. To me, CD6 is the true vintage dirt bike celebration in Australia.

That said I hope the Bonanza is successful and look forward to hearing from those who do get there.

Well I for one am really looking forward to it, been 6 months since I have been on a bike, we are not rich people, but I dont see this being a big cost, $22.00 MA Li and $60.00 fee for 2 days plus free camping, bring a bit of food and drink , chuck a tent - swag up,,,,owell if stuff all turn up then that means a nice open ride on the Vinduro Track for me  ;D and since I dont have a bike for any other class of riding I might see if I can do some more laps on the track the following day to.

I know Drakie and others are putting in a massive effort to make this a great weekend for all, at least a few people I know are going for sure, so we will find each other easy for a chat and drink  ;D  :D

Cheers Mick.

Have left my entry to the last minute both my riding mates are non-starters but I like the concept . $60.00 plus $ 22.00 lic. fee is great value though with the bush fires and the economy the VIBE just seems off the mark never the less I am going to the vinduro which are always great fun! The event will see Bike lovers from a wide specturm of disciplines come together so I am as interested in seeing some of that action aswell, how long I stay will depend on how much of a good time I am having , so  with that in mind I will through some Huskies on the five bike trailer and head on up.Regards JIMBO.

I'll be going around for a look on both days. It will be hard to justify the fuel to travel back & forth both days in this economy bit I will manage somehow ::)

Drakie told me the other week that they already had a lot of entries in & I know of a few interstaters that are travelling down.
Remember, not everyone in the vintage scene gets on this forum, as popular as this site is.

Can i ride a 81 490 in vinduro or do u need a enduro bike? Will take the IT250k just in case. Is there a web site i can view the flyer?

What a feast of motorbike action at Broadford!
Not as large, in terms of mx bikes, compared to CD but none the less a good turn out.
Saw the man on the RM400 come a cropper, right in front of us on the back table top, he looked a bit out of control on the approach and bounced off the "top" and flew off the old girl on the down ramp and whacked his leg pretty hard!
You have to watch those RM400's!!!

really sorry that this happened to forum member "Gator" a really genuine giving bloke.

hope you recover well and quickly mate, i'm thinking of you.

I have some more interesting static Bike photo's i took that i will post soon.

this was a great bike, built was top notch, PE400 engine in 1989 RM frame, looked like it was meant to be. it was a magnet for many on the day and the bloke who made it had the biggest grin. for me this was the most interesting, best bike i of the event. detail was supurb.

how about the 1981 CR range  125, 250 & 450 then. all built virtually from NOS parts. the 450 was featured in VMX 24. bike have never been started (or had fuel apparently) and never will be, so the word around was. pure bubble wrapped, vacuum sealed garage queens only.

lots more pics to follow at a later time, gotta wash my bike from yesterday and spend some time with the family today.

Lovely. I don't believe a member of the VMX community would do that to another member, no matter how rowdy they were. This has to be a wind up.

that PE has a lot of WR500 look about it. Doesnt really suit any vintage era/class, but would be a good comfortable ride with a bullet proof and reliable motor that can sure mix it with the 400/450 modern 4 strokes.

is that a hydraulic clutch on it?

Looks like a great event guys, glad it all went well. I'd reckon the road race numbers must have been down severely as I'm just back from the Barry Sheen Festival of Speed at Eastern Creek and there must have been 250 plus entrants with a shit load more bikes. The quality of the bikes and the racing was superb. Why do MA do things like clashing 2 major events?

Yes Leith it is a hyd' clutch. i spoke to the owner and he built it as in his words " i wanted the best bike, so i made one". yes you are right, it does not fit any era but he has it registered and uses it as a trail bike.

How was the racing. ?
Alison

no racing at all, it was a demo day social event only, it is purely geared to get old bikes out of sheds. a great concept i reckon all disciplines at one venue. i rode the MX track but i wanted to spectate as well but could not cover it all. lots going on in other areas.

there was road racing solo & sidecar, Vinduro, trials, speedway solo & sidecar, Dirt track, US style flat trackers ,MX solo & sidecar pre 65 -> pre85.

Spew !! Bad luck Gator, jeez mate you've had some pretty ropey luck with the old injuries, hang in there son. Thanks Paul for the update. Re the MA situation, with Drakie taking up the cause the Broady event was always a chance to go well, he's got a habit of getting the message around. But roadrace-wise, surely going up against the Barry Sheene Memorial at EC was always going to be a gamble. I couldn't go, but have heard that Stu Avant, the Sayle brothers, Kork Ballington, Graeme Crosby, Dave Hiscock and plenty of others have been spotted in the pits, meanwhile at Broady the 1969 world 250 champ Kel Carruthers was scheduled to demo the 1960 Honda 250 four, with the chance to see John Woodley on his RG500, Rod Tingate on the Konig, etc. Why would you clash them ? Historic roadrace fans must be gnashing their teeth.....or gums, anyway.... :D

Hoony spent over three hours at the Speedway/ flat track circuit. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Did you get to see the V twin Godden speedway going for it?  8) Fusing two  shit hot Godden 500cc  speedway engines together * !!! That 26+? year old monster competes against modern Speedway sidecars sometimes and is always at the front end of the field at the finish.
* The Godden twins were factory made in England for grass track and long track speedway, I have a magazine clipping and poor quality piccy of one of the 1000s fitted to a Wasp framed Sidecarcrosser !Very very nice and gentle..............

Big thanks to Drakie and all responsible for the Broadford Bonanza, It was a superb change to have so many motorcycle competition disciplines going on together.  Knockers and doom Sayers, in my opinion it was not at all a Classic Dirt clone. Ideas for change /improvement? yes I have some, A Grand Parade and group  Photo session of VMX solos and VMX sidecars maybe? Even running the full on racing Victorian Classic Speedway Titles on the Saturday Arvo maybe. . A reserved "Dry and Quiet area" camping zone... Yes deep down we all know what I mean here and no I am not an old fuddy duddy OK! Oh and a bit of rain ;) Cheers.

Title: Re: Whos going to Broadford at Easter

Spent all day Saturday at the Barry Sheene and had a pretty good time. I ran into Firko, Jonesy and Yamaboy and had an enjoyable lunch at the Cricketers Arms English pub up the road from the track. After lunch we caught up with Jonothan Houston (Club Wog, Aspes etc) and his new Motobi 250 racer, Mick Hockley and his 350 TZ (left the Maico at home). Had a good yarn with Robbie Phillis whose girlfriend Christine is an old "mate" of Jonesys and discovered that Kork Ballington has some mutual mates back in South Africa and Qld.

The Saturday lunchtime demo by Graeme Crosby on the Moriwaki Suzuki and Kork on the works Kawa was a bit underdone as Kork was obviously uncomfortable on the Kawa which was running a bit iffy. Croz was just Croz and flew off leaving Ballington and the coughing and farting Kawa way behind.

All in all it was a pretty good event but was spoiled a bit by the Bonanza being on the same day. What were MA thinking?? After it was over we went back to the Cricketers Arms and Jonesy rank some mates who'd gone to the Bonanza and heard that we were missing a great time. Hopefully next year the finances will be better and MA and the Barry Sheene organisers can sort out their differences and run on seperate weekends. The sport's too small to run biggys against each other on the same weekend.

Went to the Show on Sunday to keep the family happy and to top up my Bertie Beetle stash. Unbelievably, ran into Jonesy and his family again! We avoided the bar this time but we did all sit and compare showbags over a bad Capachino!

Get well soon Gator. It's crook enough crashing while you're racing but even more tragic doing it in a FUN event.

I just got home from Broadford and we all had a great weekend ,with so many things goin on it was hard to get to all the events , I spent saturday at the vinduro and got some laps on the mx track late and spent sunday at the mx ,speedway and the bar on top of the hill was perfect for wathcing over the whole show and the road circuit . From the amount of people and bikes  in the road circuit pits i dont think they were lookin for numbers there was some magic old bikes in there and they sounded like they should out on the track . The speedway was awesome and i will post some shots when i get a chance . Well done to all involved in running it ,I loved it thanks .

I did the pre80/85 mx on the gp track and vinduro on the saturday. There was no ugly amounts of dust on the mx track all day and only the second session of vinduro was dusty, as to be expected. you dont water the bush before ya go trail riding..
it rains bugger all these days down here in mexico and they did a great job containing the dust where i was riding. I cant speak for the other riding areas, but the speadway and dirt track was great too.
The GP MX track was prepared awsome, unless u were riding a tricycle around it, i cant see why anyone would of had any complaints.
Some of the jumps are definately to suit modern bikes, but they are only as dangerous as your right hand makes it!

I did get the feeling focus wasnt really on the mx guys,as noone seemed to know what was going on for a while there. it seemed a bit like we were there to make up the numbers a little, but still had a great time none the less.
The road race section looked like it was booming..
Hopefully next year if it happens, they have more riding for mx and vinduro ;D

There completely different with the different types of bikes and spread out over the entire huge broadford complex . The only way to check would be go to both and have twice the fun.

Quote from Hilly " There completely different with the different types of bikes and spread out over the entire huge Broadford complex . The only way to check would be go to both and have twice the fun."  No use trying to compare the two straight up as Classic Dirt is for Classic " DIRT ", one regime of motorcycle sport,  This event was for multiple forms of motorcycle competition.  It worked and if someone or ones were not happy by all means offer ideas and suggestions for improvement, or maybe even try to organise your own superlative event. 8)

Patrick Fletcher, the Broadford complex manager, has claimed they received over 350 signed-on participants, travelling from as far afield as south of Hobart, and as far north as Rockhampton. These numbers indicate they are onto something! Looking through the results from the BSM, it would appear that the fields were somewhat thin in some classes, hopefully the minor issues can be resolved, and both events can co-exist to mutual prosperity. I must say, since the much-touted Global Economic Crisis, the world of historic motor sport has never been better supported !  ;)

Hey Gator. Whilst you were rolling around on the ground and groaning like the big girly-girl that you are, you asked me for a loan of 1000 bucks. Any chance I can get it back by Friday?
*Carole says to stop being horrible to you but I just don't seem to know how!

I have been sitting back watching the posts come in on this event and wondered when someone may touch on the “other side of the coin”

It was going to be a huge ask to be able to organize and run an event over 2 days with 7 or so disciplines all in the same location. With the high temps (it was high 20’s on Saturday and almost that again on Sunday) the dust in area’s other than the road racing area was going to be an issue. The organizers had the water truck going pretty much all the time, but 10 trucks would have not kept the dust at bay.

Looking at the Motocross side of things and having organized events for motocross and on at least 1 occasion at Broadford, I understand what amount of resources are required to stage an event there. For those who have not been to the Broadford MX complex, it is essentially a natural terrain track that runs up & down the side of a 3 sided valley and is without doubt a world class facility, however it requires a lot of flaggies and marshals to oversee the running of an event. With the Scramble, Trials, Speedway/DirtTrack & Enduro groups all vying for volunteers to run (and not participate) in an event, the organizers of the weekend where going to be up against it. It got to a point on the Sunday morning that the motocross organizers gathered all the motocross riders and advised that a fair % of the volunteers had decided not to turn up and that if we wanted a ride we would either have to flag ourselves or find someone who could do it on out behalf.

Having ridden the track at Classic Dirt I know that it can be Pre85 friendly, but it was not the case. Big table tops, double jumps and a set of whoopdies, that were bypassed during the course of the weekend meant that it did not flow for all but 2 young A grade riders.
Personally I would have like to have seen the Scramble crew on the main motocross track in the same way that they were at Classic Dirt and not stuck on the side of the side of the opposing side of the valley using a track 3 inches deep in bull dust.

From the people that I spoke to about the Vinduro, they were wrapped but not having a scheduled event on the Sunday had a few perplexed.

The concept was fantastic, the execution almost there but I got the feeling that it was to much for the overworked and underpaid organizers and volunteers. I hope that Drakie gets the guernsey to go again next year as the concept is a cracker of an idea.

The Positives.
The overall concept
Broadford and all its facilities
An excellent watering system for the motocross track
Organizers & volunteers that gave up their time

The Negatives
Dickheads running their bikes at all hours of the night.
Volunteers that didn’t keep their end of the commitment
The track layout for Pre85 & Old fellas  ::)
Being run over Easter

I spent practically all day on Saturday thrashing around the Vinduro circuit, (I must've come close to the record for the most laps), so I got to see little else. What I did see convinced me that this was a fantastic event. My only criticism? That I didn't organise myself to come up for both days!

A big thanks to the sidecar boys who gave me the opportunity to do a couple of laps as a passenger too. I've never tried anything like that before!

It was great to catch up with a few people, put faces to email names, and meet new folks.

It took a full 24 hours to get the smile off my face, and longer than that for my joints to stop aching.

Well done to Drakie and the organisers.

Wasp Luckily we still have in this country some freedom of choice to say yep I go or nope that's a miss , of course the household budget plays a  monumental part too ;) If I could afford to and had the spare time to go to all the events I wished I could, I would  :D. Cheers mate and seriously Please take care up in Thailand.

The Pre 85's weren't their to make up numbers, it just happened that their was a shortage of flag marshals.
The other tracks seemed to have enough volunteers, or maybe it was the GP track needed more flaggies?
I was going to flag again on Sunday but while cruising around the pits checking out bikes I started to lose balance. I pulled up at KB's pits, he started to have a conversation with me but he was hard to understand while he was out of focus & swaying from side to side, allthough he insists he was standing still :o
I collapsed in his van & he doused me with water. (Many thanks KB) I made a point of drinking a few litres of water after this but it scared me enough to not want to go stand in the sun again.

It was different to Classic Dirt in that their was a lot of things happening in different places so it was a lot more spread out. So many things to see, so little time. And so much bloody walking.
What did make it the same as Classic Dirt though was the people, their was a really good vibe around the place. Many great bikes to see, many great people to talk to & every one enjoying them selves.
Well, except maybe Gator, hope the leg heals well mate.

I went as a spectator and my arse was run off going from venue to venue. The whole problem with having so many disciplines is trying to fit them all in. If I had a road racer, a dirt tracker and a VMX bike I would have been a very busy lad, it was hard enough spectating. Next time as a spectator I'll take a pitbike.

Geoff,
Looking back at the posting i see a little miss-interpretation.
When i refer to Pre85, i was referring to bikes fom Day 1 to 1985, inclusive of everything in between.

I went and saw Gator last night in the Hossy. His legs pretty fugged and he says that's it for his come back/riding career. Probably will struggle to walk properly again I'd say (well that poncy hand on the hip flounce that he does anyway). He's as good as you'd expect and I spent the night calling him names whilst Carole belted me around the head the whole time (she should be an honory Good 'ol Boy). He loved it.
He'd like to thank Billet YZ for his quick action after the big get-off and also for making sure he was trussed up okay for the ambo ride. He didn't know about that 'till I told him and he's gratefull.
The funniest part of the weekend would have been Paul abusing the dickheads who kept us awake 'till four in the morning on Sat. I think they were ready for some banter untill the angry man emerged from his tent only wearing his Grand Dad's Y-fronts.
They were very quiet on Saturday night.
And if someone was gullible enough to think that I'd be creative enough to piss on someones tent then......... :D

Talk about busy, rode a road racer, dirt tracker and trials bike all with different gear shifts. Leathers to dirt gear to leathers to dirt gear. I didnt watch a lap until Sunday arvo but had a ball.Saw heaps of people but didnt get a chance to yarn with most of them. Half the time I had no idea what gear I was in or wether to stick my knee out or throw it sideways approaching the first corner, talk about a challenge. Also to the people who contacted me re some wheels & hubs for sale, I have had no computer for a few weeks but will contact you shortly.  Tony

Bit of a practice day  8)

Motorcycling Victoria to hold Bushfire Relief Day
Posted: Friday, 3rd July, 2009 : 11:48 PM - - 433 Reads -
Motorcycling Victoria (MV) will conduct a Bushfire Relief Social Day at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex at Broadford on Saturday, 8 August 2009.

All circuits at the Complex will be open on the day, with the aim being to raise money for the MV Bushfire Fund. The MV Bushfire Fund was launched earlier this year by MV who wished to raise money for its members who were affected by the devastating bushfires.

All the money raised on the day will go towards the MV Bushfire Fund, and once completed MV will compile all the money raised over the last few months and divide it between those members whose situation was made aware to MV, with the aim of keeping them involved in the sport they love.

On the day, practice sessions will be available on the Road circuit, Motocross track, Supercross track, Dirt Track, Enduro loop and Trials area.

There will be a one off fee of $30 which will entitle the rider to participate on any track for which their bike is suitable. For example, a person with a Motocross bike could participate on the Motocross track, Supercross track and Enduro loop all for just $30.

Riders can even bring two different bikes and ride on the different circuits and still only pay $30. Classic MX and Quads are also welcome and will be allocated time on the MX track and Enduro loop on their own while the main groups have a break.

For those wishing to ride on the Road Circuit and Supercross track, there are some conditions (outlined below) that you need to be aware of.

Ride Fees

$30.00 – allows you to ride Motocross, Supercross*, Dirt Track, Enduro and Trials for the day. A current MV/MA licence is required. For those who do not hold a current licence, a one-day licence can be purchased on the day for $20.00.

* Supercross track – bookings are essential for the SX track and it will run only in the afternoon by an accredited coach who can complete SX Endorsements, which are required to ride. If you are not currently SX Endorsed this can be completed before the open practice session and, again, bookings are essential as numbers will be limited and it is on a first come first served basis. Bookings for the SX Track can be made by calling the MV Office on 03 9482 5422

** Road Circuit – the Road Circuit will be run by Champions Ride Days under their normal conditions at their normal rates, much of which will be donated to the MV Bushfire Fund. Bookings are essential and can be done through Champions directly at www.championsridedays.com.au.

This day would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers from several of our affiliated clubs, Champions Ride Days and the MV Staff at both the Clifton Hill Office and Broadford. A big thank you must also be extended to the Harley Club for opening up their land adjoining the Complex for use of their wonderful Trials area, which will be enjoyed by all participants.

MV invites you all to join us on this day and enjoy all that Broadford has to offer, with a great day of riding whilst also helping out your fellow Motorcycling Victoria members by contributing to the MV Bushfire Fund. If you can volunteer some time on the day to assist with the smooth running of the event, please contact the MV Office.

Food and drinks will be available on the day and will be provided by local groups who have also been affected by the bushfires.

More specific details will be available on the MV website in the week prior to the event.
