To be a little controversial; What do you reckon is the best looking dirt bike of all time?
You must support your nomination with a piccy. 8)
I nominate the Husky CR390, but its gotta be the black one.
I should point out that I've never owned a husky, only ever ridden/raced one (1972 400) and, other than for appearance of the CR390, never wanted to own one. In fact I think most of the others, Aberg rep's, mags and late model white ones, are on the other end of the scale - they look crap.
-
1982 RM125Z Looked like a winner, went like one too...

I like this thread! I am torn between two, but i will go with the cr250'79(http://www.alp-sys.com/honda-elsinore/images/79cr250r-13.jpg)
There are so many when you start to think about it!
-
No cuppi doll for cyclegod :D, RM looks like any other Jap MX'er fo the period IMHO. Nothing wrong with it but not a stand out.
090, you might sway me. Elegent simplicity 8). Maybe the red is overdone but not bad; not bad at all 8).
-
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I can't think of anything prettier than a Rickman Metisse.

Firko, you are just too predictable ;D
-
What about the little Hodaka Super Rat. I think these things look great. Darcy
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
tell me your joking darcy ! its a evil looking thing to me.
i'm with 090 on this one.
-
For me its a toss up between 1974 CR250m and the 1974 Maico 440.

No joke raced one in the 70's and still love them. Darcy
-
My best looking choice has to be an HL500.
White tank and the LHS exhaust!
-
mx or dirt in genaral
-
I'm with mx250!! :o However, Hannah's lighting bolt G model YZ's were awesome :-*

"Little" definitely; 'Cute' maybe; 'Good looking' yep; 'Best Looking' never ;D

I was going to answer the question with "TM Bill for sure", but then I realised it was about bikes... ;D
It's actually a really hard question to answer - but on the bright side there's no right or wrong answers, just opinions. Allow me to crap on for a bit while I think about it...
To my eyes, all pre-70 bikes look kinda clunky. So why not go all out for the clunky-ness and go for the leading link Greeves? I recognise that they're not a 'pretty' bike, but I like the way they look, largely because that they didn't try to be anything other than functional. The RH67 is cool too - half of it is incredibly cobby looking, the other half really quite nice. I don't mind Glenn W's ('68?) Husky either - not so cobbly.
Pre-75 is easy for me: 1971 YZ250. I also like the Ossa Phantom for the same reasons I like the RH67. But I don't think any of the pre-75 MX bikes are ugly - even relative 'dross' like MX250s are pretty good looking bikes in my eyes.
Pre-78: '77 RM125.
In the world of Evo bikes, I really like the all white Huskies and the CR250RZ. But the (Italian) TM125 is the winner.
Pre-85: 83 or 84 YZ125/250 are the best of an un-inspiring bunch. The Cagivas (like in the recent VMX) are good, but I'll reserve judgement until I see one in the flesh.
Later stuff:
YZM500.
Leisk-era HRC500s.
In the world of production bikes, the 87 and 88 Honda CRs get my vote.
I also reckon the 91~93 Huskys are some of the best looking bikes of the last 20 years.
Never seen a TM that I don't think is good looking, and the early GasGases deserve a mention.
Hmm, now that I've thought about it, the 71 YZ250 works bike gets my vote.
-
sorry couldnt resist yz250j ;D ;D ;D

Nice bike but I prefer your first choice, the CR, when it comes to straight beauty.
Do you have 'something' about red bikes :D

I was going to answer the question with "TM Bill for sure", but then I realised it was about bikes... ;D

Hmm, now that I've thought about it, the 71 YZ250 works bike gets my vote.

Have mercy - I'm on dial-up!
Hallmans' one is featured in the second or third most recent issue of VMX.
-
Geez, that's a hard one. So many good looking bikes...
I agree with most everyone so far - Husky 390s, CR250RZs, Metisses, HL500s and so on. All gorgeous. However, I have to say that for me, a twin shock bike is what a bike should look like. I don't find single shock bikes attractive, so that lets out a lot of the Pre 85s. I really prefer too that my twin shocker has laid down shocks.
Now, I will admit I love the looks of my white tank Husky. Very cool!
But... weirdly enough, the best looking dirtbike ever, to me, is the Suzuki RM125M/S

whats with all the maicos its best looking bike not most overrated ::)

pre75, bultaco pursang ,kx450
pre 78 ,ccm500 suzuki rm250/370/125
evo, 82 husky500 kawasaki a5 250
pre85, kawasaki500 honda cr500
pre90, kawasaki kx500 1988 ;D
works bikes, yzm500, jobes 500 kx.stephen galls ow take your pick the list is long
and most of the bikes in vmx they all look trick even maicos :P only joking
it ran last time i started it :)
-
Maicos overrated, nahh you mustn't have ridden one. So wheres your pic's?
-
Most "works" bikes do it for me.
This is Goat Brekker's 85 250, the disc shrouds of this era though are bloody awful.

Luv the YZ250J Caps i had one as a kid and i loved it but best looking has got to go to my YZ400E. (http://)(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/yzhilly/YZ400E.jpg)

1965 350 Ducati 350 Scrambler. The bike is owned by Brian O'Connor in Virginia USA and has twice won the AHRMA Premier Lightweight national title. The bike I bought from him has that very engine. Pretty little thing eh?
-
Firko, you have to tell an ignorant guy like me who missed mx in the sixties and most of the seventies what it is! And of course it looks great.
-
So many to choose from, and I like all the bikes mentioned, but for me its not just 1 bike but more a period in time. That period is the last of the twinshock era. The 1980 CR's, 1980 RM's, 1980 YZ's and 1979 KX's-A5, and the euro bikes, Maico's, Huskies etc. To me it was the pinnacle of MX and I dont think that the manufacturers of motocross bikes have ever reach the same hieghts again. All the bikes look different but, are also similar in their sleekness, aggressive stance, and general bussiness like, no frills approach for what they were made for.
Hail, the last of the Twinshock era.
-
Amen! :)

I would agree but I think the Husky CR390 is the BEST of the BEST. It looks brutal and gracefull. It has form and function, nothing unnecessary and nothing out of place, everything beautifully designed.
Come on guys. No vacillating, no philosophical 'fence sitting', just a 'balls on the line' decisive one choice, backed up with a piccy. By order Herr Threadmeister. ;D
-
Brad...The bike is American racer Brian O'Connors pre 65 Ducati 350. It's very similar to the unfinished Hindall framed Ducati I bought from him which is on the water as we speak.(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/RBUIG-LXRIG-hindall9.jpg)
Picking the best looking anything can never have a definitive result. If we all had the same tastes we'd all be in love with the same woman or riding the same brand bike. Having said that, I like everyone else have my picks which are, in most cases way different to the bikes I've raced or owned.
*pre 65. I've made my point earlier that not only do I think that the MK3 Rickman Metisse (with any engine) the best looking pre 65 bike, I think it's the best looking dirt bike period.
*pre75. Even though many consider them pretty ordinary, I think Yamaha got it right with the MX250/360/500. The lines flow smoothly and it looks nice trom every angle. The OSSA Phantom gets my runner up.(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/1974-Yamaha-MX250A-Yellow-6.jpg)
*pre 78. I'll stick wiith Yamaha here and nominate the HL Aberg replica. They look tough even on the trailer. (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/HL500_profab_750.jpg)
*Evo. I like the 78-80 CR 250 Hondas. Pretty from every angle.
*Pre 85. Sadly individuality starts to take a back seat as the manufacturers started to manufacture different coloured replicas of each others products. By the time the 90s had arrived it had become hard to tell the various makes from each other by anything other than colour. Don't get me wrong, I like modern bikes and I own a KTM, but the individuality has gone as far as my tastes go.
*Dirt track. I apologise for using another of Jonseys bikes to make a point but his bikes are as beautiful as they come.
You'd have to dig deep to find a bike as beautiful as his Trackmaster/850 Nourish Weslake. From every angle it oozes testosterone. (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/aj1.jpg)

im a bit bias

Exoridinary isn't it. The MX is the LAST bike I expected to be nominated. I didn't think any one had any respect for the old beastie let alone affection.
The MX was my first MX'er, Motocrossed it (and won two open 'c' grades at Kembla), Road Raced it (and won a club 250 at Amaroo), Dirt Tracked (and won a club, Villawood M.C.C., championship) and when it wasn't competitive at circuit racing converted it to enduros and rode to work, rode the trails and enduro raced it. I loved it and thrashed it and have still got it.
But I never thought it was pretty or had any attachment to it other than in the 'doing' (in fact I was and still am somewhat 'defensive' about the old MX) - I absolutely loved it for the 'doing' and I'm still in awe of it and reckon its about the best bike ever created (but I would never argue it around a rally fire for fear of being ostraized, laughed at, humiliated and ridiculed).
But when it comes to the aesthetics I thought it was plum ugly, like a barge arsed woman - sure it had some interesting points of redemption but the overall was.....
(And I had the Silver Grey first model which was far superior in looks to that tarted over Americanised yellow crapper :D).
To me it aesthetics suggested what it was - a tarted over trail bike.
But that's aesthetics; each to their own.
-
As an older chappie I've got to agree that not too many bikes have come along as pretty as a Metisse. (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/25047851.jpg)(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/25047516.jpg)
I melt for anything with a nickel plated frame but can see the beauty in the Red Devil Hondas and VR Montesa Cappras. I love that crinkle cut finning.
*Note to Holeshot Buddy. Give yourself an uppercut son. Rating a Maico 490 as over rated is like saying Jennifer Hawkins is a skank.
You've obviously never ridden one.
-
It is hard to top your first love. :D
(http://www.post-vintage.com/images/First_Love.JPG)

Awesome this is good viewing the evolution of MX ,surely someone has a pic of the mighty YZ465 . I just need a pic of Jen on my bike that would do it for me !.
-
just a pic of Jen would do it anytime, what a Sheila !
-
The best looking STOCK motocross bike has to be the Husky 390, close to perfection.
Start modifying your bike and then the 1978/79 Red Devil starts to come into its own. Put on an alloy swingarm, Fox Forx and Shox, a DG pipe and muffler and white number plate backgrounds and you've got a 2 wheeled Hawko.
-
Poison Lil on 306 Yamaha gets my vote. They all look great , but that one does it for me . Is she A-Grade ? :P :P :P

any make near any model years '74 thru '78 for my liking..below typifies the later styling 8)

I don't have any pictures of early works stuff, it's the hand made parts that I like to perv on.

Whats wrong with voting for A grade ? ::) ;D

You're right Geoff, some of the exotic shit the Japs came out with in the early eighties was pure art. Oh for a return to the days of full on works bikes.
If the Red Devil CRs are Hawko on wheels I reckon the HLs are Firko on wheels
-
I reckon the HLs are Firko on wheels
Hmmmm, I don't think I will use that in my HL advertising campiagn :)
I would have voted for a HL but I didn't want to be predictable.

Was it Baileys 500 that had the alloy tank that went down to the cases? That was the trickest of trick. Doc, whats the first one?Firko, thanks for these history lessons, good to see and know what was around back then!

Doc, whats the first one?
Brad that first one be an Italian Simonini Cross 50..pretty flash eh.
78/79 TM125 and 1980 Cagiva are also easy on the eyes

Not the weapon of choice in 76/77 but I wanted one then

but looks slim , light and uncomplicated on the stand
and feels the same to ride

you can even bling them up a bit

Doc....As much as I love Maicos, that Maico 50 is butt ugly. How about a bit of beauty from the other end of the grunt scale. Klub Kevlar Kalifornia representative Marsh Runyons C&J framed XR1000 Harley.
-
:D Firko you talk of butt ugly and then go post that hideous pic! No dissrepect to anyone but beauty is quite obviously in the eye of the beholder ;)
-
Oh so true Doc. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I have to say though that while Marshes Harley isn't the prettiest girl in the class it's far from what I'd regard as hideous. Anyone who's actually seen the bike in the flesh will tell you that it's an absolute work of art. The more one looks at it, the cooler it is. I agree however that it's not everyones idea of a beautiful bike. It's a love/hate thing. No middle ground. Sadly the big guy has retired it and retired from motocross. He's building a blown KB powered 53 Studebaker salt lakes racer now. Not bad for a 6'7" 70 year old one legged legend.
-
theres nothing wrong with that harley firko i would own it in a heart beat
-
No disrespect to the owner, but I have to agree with you Doc, give me the little Maico any day. Horsepower doesnt always mean beauty..... only in america...... but I wish him good luck with his next project :)
-
I reckon the Harley's gorgeous too. I saw it at Ravenswood in '92 and stayed overnight at Marsh's place in Fresno in 95. Many Aussie vintage racers have dropped in at Marsh and MaryJanes 'Crippled R Ranch' over the years. I was lucky enough to have a blurt around the paddock on not only the big motocrosser but on his KR flat tracker. I had a drive of his T Bucket hot rod too.
I reckon the Bultaco Astro would have to be up there in the beauty stakes (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/astro1.jpg)(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/astro3.jpg)
-
I dig big Marsh's Harley too. I always had a soft spot for the Cotton Cobra. They were tempermental pricks of things but I reckon they look great.
In pre 75 I reckon there's nothing finer than an Ossa Phantom (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/Ossa%20Phantom%20Brochure.jpg)
While I agree that those black tank '79 Huskys look good, they don't hold a candle to the prettiest Husky of them all, the 1981 CR500 'Silver Bullet'. (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1062154/husky500.jpg)
-
Short, light, sweet. i have but only one true love. my Yza. For the time these puppies where on the cutting edge, flat takers ran Disk brakes in 72 but motcross still had to wait a few years, no bling or bullshit just built real light and wound real tight. Motorcross screwed around with all these hair brain idea ( rear shock forks come to mind ) and yet the dirt track bikes just went fast, this one has dual shifts ( L&R paddles) ideas that actually served a purpose, the point came where you had to ride the arse of them because there was no miracle long travel shock coming, it was all skill and determination from there on in, hence why so many died trying to find that 'Ragged edge'. These guy worked with the technology they had and tuned everything, even the frames to get every extra bit of turn and power. The only exotic bits where ceriani, betor and mazzochi forks and suspension that while simple actually did one thing - worked, (and are still some the best forks today, even KTM used them.)
Racing in venues like the Astro dome with 50,000+ people cheering like a gladiators ring, i wish my little bike could talk, i wonder what it has seen for the last 33 years, some time beauty is not how flash or cutting edge something is, it is its moments in life, i believe the best looking bike can also be that which is a success and has done so over many years, its the bike or model that has pumped away for years like the little train that 'thought he could' that gets my vote, a flashy works mx bike might look good on a stand but many are real one hit wonders, one season of success really cant be the yard stick for the best of breed.
This bike rode district 36 and throughout california for over 16 years on both the pro circuit ridden by guys like Randy Mamola, Rodger Slack, Don Bailey, Rusty Davis, Mike and Dave Faria, Mike and Rick Delacy, Rocky robinson, handed down to Only the most serious of sportsmen racers. In 1974, 75 many pro's even ran them with a 360. my exhaust is ex steve ekland short track pipe helped its rider to ama Rookie of the year and onto many ama titles. A tough little bike even running White plates, number 1 or 2 one year, White plate were awarded to the top 20 shorttrackers in California.
Some times beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not everyone likes the flat track look or style, but we also need to give credit to those models that just kept pluggin away for so many years and 'Earned' the right to be known as one of the best. ;)

I haven't changed my vote, despite putting up some beautiful bikes and passionate arguments I'm unmoved - the Black Husky CR390 by a handsom :D margin.
Back in 'the day' when I was in the market for a new MX'er I looked at the CZ but was put off by 'the house paint apllied by a house painter' painted tank, the funky looks and the price. But just to show an 'old nail' can be turned into a thing of beauty with a dab of paint and a little good taste and 'spit and polish' I offer the following....
Maybe not 'the champ' in 'the prettiest ever' but definately a contender.
(Firko, this is your cue to post the other 'black beauty' - that Kiwi chromemoly titanium wonder (that was on the old forum)).

As much as some will tear strips off me for even suggesting this, I reckon a hot little XL125 would be ideal in this Ancillotti. It has all the appearances of a mini HL :P

Just looked in my shed, various hideous fugly sidecars, race stripped SL350 and SL125 and my sweet little restored SL70 ::) better move to another thread hey Tim!!!! ;)

OK Hoony, just increased the folder space for attachments... But I'm thinking I'll have to prune that folder some time soon.

Guys, delete all references to Harley and dirt bikes in the same sentence - nice bikes maybe ::), but to be grouped with MX'er in any sense other than the exceptionally general is ridiculous.
Harleys are an abberation within motorcycling generally and only surviving to emotionally support those with low self esteem issues :'( :-* :-\. The kindest, most accurate description of Harley I've ever read was in an American road test of about 20 years ago. The jurno describe them as 'vintage motorcycling at its best' - and that was 20 years ago and nothing changed or improved.
Dirt bikes generally, but MX'ers particularly, are designed for pragmatic function over form. Putting an antiquated 200kg asthmatic 1200cc breathless motor making 60bhp into a beatifully engineered frame with details such as a carbon firbe mudgaurd does not make a beatiful bike let alone a beatiful MX'er.
To be gracious, the only role Harley has with dirt bikes is as some sort of ironic comic relief ;D

MX..I'd totally agree with you if we were talking about Harley Davidson road bikes but have to come in here and disagree with your criticisms of Harleys as dirt bikes. While the XR750 is no motocross bike it is indeed the absolute king of flat track racing. Many manufacturers have tried to knock the XR750 off it's pedestal since 1972, and some actually did for a brief time, but 35 years later, the Harley is still king. Not only is the XR750 fast, it is also a beautiful piece of kit. Smooth and lacking any of the traditional Harley baubles, the bike is a classic execution of the form, function and beauty trifecta.
When you first posted this thread you asked what is the best looking motocrosser of all time. That's a big question that evokes our personal likes and dislikes and what we think is beautiful to the eye. By telling us to delete all references to Harleys and dirt bikes in the same sentence you're imposing your own prejudices on us after asking our opinions. Many of us like Harleys and have valid reasons for posting them. I happen to love Marsh Runyons XR Harley for it's superb engineering, beautiful deatailing and macho stance. I also know how much of the owners soul is reflected in its appearance. Others like yourself and Doc don't like it and that's cool. To overall dismiss all Harleys as worthless dirtbikes however is not only dismissing the bike but dismissing other peoples opinions when that's exactly what you asked for in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an apologist for Harley Davidson. I agree that they are overweight, gutless tanks as road bikes but I do think that some Harley Davidsons have much to offer as a valid dirt bikes and have as much right to be in this thread as a CR390 Husky if that is what someone likes. Nothing personal here, (I should insert a smiley here ;D) I'm just playing counterpoint to your statement. Cheers.

I'll take one of those early TM's(not the Suzuki's) for a bit of beauty. There was a pic in VMX of one of Dick Mann's BSA 250's that I loved.
For a change I'd have to agree 100% with you there firko ??? ;D
-
I reckon the 'factory built' Harley MXers look great.
-
Beautifully articulated Firko. I'd have an XR750 in a heartbeat. Marsh's lovely XR1000 surely does reflect his unique personality. That KR he pictured working on in his shed is the bike I hooned around the paddock behind his house. Scared the shitter out of Mary Janes donkeys. There's no room for prejudice when it comes to bikes. Even the humble AT1 or Hodaka deserve as much respect as Black Betty or a Harley.
There's room for all bikes of all persuasions in our sport.
-
don't get me wrong. I did not say exclude Harleys I simply said they do nothing for me. Dirt track Harleys are somewhat different but if the situation arose whereby I had a choice then I'd still go for an XS650 dirt tracker (see Eddie's bike below) before a Harley. That's just me.

And that Harley MXer went on to become a Cagiva and eventually a Husky. Pity that pic didn't show the "other" shocks. Ah, here we are: http://harleydavidson250mx.freeservers.com/images/76mx250proto.jpg

I've always liked the look of twin shock Kawasakis. This little beauty is especially neat. I just don't like the green colour.

I know many people think that pre 65 bikes look clunky but to me they're very cool. Here's my pom mate Bens BSA Goldstar Scrambler.

Or what about my 1952 Schwinn Roadmaster Deluxe? I found it in a skip bin in Long Beach California. Cool or what?

Totally different screaming loud sound now........ Oh and the straight out pipe set fire to my sons nylons on the track lucky he had fire suit underneath as it was a freezing day at Colac.. ::) Tim

Hey they only build one brand of bike.

Love the air filter ::)
-
air filter?
i'm sure is the finest grade of fly screen.
i'd love to see the other side of the bike and check out the pipe.
it looks about as big as the filter.

Although I've never owned any Maico, I reckon the 440MC (1980 or 81???) was one tough looking bike. I remember the test in ADB with Ross King flexing his "muscles" next to the fork legs.
Anyone got a copy of that test or mag to sell?
I can't remember the exact issue but if you've seen it, you'll remember it. Nov 81 maybe????
-
I agree with the bloke who started this thread; that Husky 390 is pure hornbag! ;)
Adolf Weils mid 70's works Maicos also appeal to me.
They weren't as 'sexy' as some of the others but they looked functional and industrial; I think it was the bare metal coffin tanks that did it.
Sorry - no image of Adolfs bikes as I'm new to this and haven't figured out how to upload piccys.

Two ways
1/ go reply, go to additional options, post as an attachment.
2/ download to a photo web site like photo bucket, down load your image to photo bucket, open reply on ozvmx, type in [img]the photobucket link [x/img] (but no 'x', i'm fooling the computer).

Very nice lineup. I'm partial towards these A model YZ's as well. Tell us some more about that push bike with the front and rear shockies!

i think its called a Yamaha Moto bike or something like that
-
the pushie is what i believe to be a yamaha "moto bike" and i believe was only avaiable from a yamaha dealership.
i remember when they first came out, seeing one down the bike shop, then a kid at school had one but it was pretty heavy compared to our stripped down dragsters.
avaiable in yellow or yellow as well.
-
Yep Yamaha Moto Bike. My brother and I got one each for Christmas back in the days when you didn't have to lock your doors and kids were safe to stay out and play till the street lights came on.
Both bikes were stolen from our home a couple of months later :(
Probably right about them only being available through dealers. From memory Dad got ours from Spooners @ Brookvale.
Adam's Moto Bike looks pretty original even down to the tyres.
Cheers
-
i think adams got one on ebay
-
they even came i an A or B model, basically single seat or later the banana seat. they were expensive even back then, but they were marketing the yamah range. Still a good market for them, and parts still around :O)
-
Yes this is A yamaha MOTO-BIKE.
This is the A model with the single seat and chrome bars.
The B model has a banna seat and comes in yellow or orange with black bars and the c model is yellow or orange and have fenders etc.
There is also a green Euro model in the 1976 model range.

Geezus that IS nice! Love those mid 70s downpipe Suzis.
-
Wow Ajay, that is very NOS. Looks like it came straight off the showroom floor!
-
This bike is of course, the ex-Barry Senn (NZ) RH250.
A very rare and very interesting bike. It even has a splined shaft exiting the RHS cases for RHS gear shifting if the Euro riders wanted it that way. :o
Naturally, it will be on display at CD5.... ;)
