At these prices Mr Honda might be tempted to start making them again???????
-
have "spoken" via email and the Honda Elsinore web site with this guy - his bikes are awesome but try buying a restored tank - nearly $1800USD if I remember rightly!
cheers

Hi
I am in exactly the same space. I need help with my affliction -collecting Honda's. I also have the same problem looking for a 1973 CR 250 restored tank. I have just finnished a 1978 Hond cr 250. The only thing I CAN SAY IS WOW- probably my best resto todate. I now have all the key Honda's in my possession including a Honda works trials bike 9 in total. I will post a few photo's shortly
-
so crabman - I am in Tanzania at the moment - dont suppose there is any sense asking if there are any bikes available down your way? ;D
Rossco
-
Very nice; but have you read the questions to the Seller?
Five of the six messages are blowing wind up his bum about how awesome it looks.
The Seller might like to field some questions about selling the thing!
-
Wombat - I do know that he restores and sells for basically a living - just a few months ago these weren't making reserve and now...................
Rossco
-
Yeah, the bike looks mint; I'm suitably impressed. No question. 8)
The comments and replies amuse me though; it's like he's a rock star and the fans are gushing their admiration. :-*
I s'pose that seems critical but I expected to see meaningful questions to the Seller, not verbal puppy eyes! :P ::)
-
agreed - it came across the same way on the Vintage Elsinores site. It actually got to the poiint where I took offense to comments made re a GMC tank resto I have - $350Aus is a lot different to $1800USDs and I am more than happy with what I got on both occasions.

Hi Rosco
Sorry mate not a chance, everybody wants Honda's here in South Africa. The aircooled Honda's are like hens teeth.
I try and buy whatever comes avaialble. I will post a few pics of my latest Honda, it is amazing. Took a lot of work after some bush doctor restored it with a can of red spray paint and silver spray paint.
thanks

I need two tanks repaired. I will be sending mine to Geoff. The tank on my third bike im building up at the moment is painted MT250 which looks ok for a ride bike. I have a spare alloy tank here that some so called restorer in Sydney repaired ( dont know who, tank came with a bike as a spare ) its a shocking job, who ever did the job wouldnt make a tank repairs arsehole. So puffed up is the tank on the inside it wont sit down over back bone of the frame. Fool either blew it up with compressed air or filled it with water and chucked in the freezer. It looks great hanging on shed wall but thats about all its good for. Maybe I should send it to Geoff as well.
I reckon in time someone will remake Elsinore tanks just like they do the Maico alloy tanks.
-
Example of how an MT250 tank can look ok on a CR and do the job on bike if your hard up finding a genuine alloy tank in good condition. This is not a restoration bike it is bike #3 which is built up from leftover CR parts and an the MT250 no one wanted. When its finished I sell it off as a Combo CR/MT Elsinore.

slightly off thread - I have a spare 76 MT tank I think it is that can go to a good home if needed by anyone as I now have 2 CR tanks?
cheers
Rossco
PS thanks for the comments Jim - I thought the GMC tank was so good had Geoff do a second one for me.

Rossco.
Could you post a picture of the tank Geoff repaired. I have never seen his work in person but heard its first glass.
-
Geoff asks me whether I want my tank polished and it is a look I like hence not having that "acid washed finish". The other noticeable difference is that all my tanks are for riders so whilst the welds around the seams could be better (as in the Spedboat photos you have seen) I am more than happy with the finished result for the price. I am sure if you asked Geoff to spend $1800US worth of time it could be better again. Also bit hard to explain but the dent removal Geoff has done is excellent.

Hi rosco
The last time I communicated with you I told you how scarce old CR 's were. Last night I bought a local newspaper, and in the CLASSIFIED adds was 1974 HONDA CR 250M1 frame. I have access to a spare CR250 motor. I hope that the frame is not a MT 250-hold thumbs. I cannot believe my good fortune.
I will publish a photo of my bikes on the weekend. Chow

and I am supposed to be happy for you!!! ;D ;D ;D
Cant ask around about any YZ360/250B bits or bikes for me could you? Please............................
:D

Hey Rossco, that was only the deposit you paid, I'm still waiting for the other 3 installments ;D
Seriously though you hit the nail on the head, it's a $ per effort factor. Painting will add quite a few hundred dollars to the price, but if I charged $1000.00 - $1200.00 for a tank I doubt that I would be given any to do, I allways get the feeling that most guys don't want to pay exorbitant amounts & just want a fair job for a fair price.
Mind you, if I charged 4 times as much I would only need to work 1/4 of the time. ;D
How good a tank comes up also depends on what shape it's in to start with & yours had already been repaired by me 10 years earlier. Quickies tank for instance, that has been blown up with pressure may come back into shape but may also look a bit different to a perfect tank. A good tank with a few simple dents will come up easier/better than one thats been trashed badly. Elsinore tanks are hard to split at the seams too as the front mount holes are multi layers welded together, otherwise the seams usually come apart reasonably easy, but creates a lot of work to put back together.
Were the Elsinore tanks normally a brushed satin finish or a mirror finish
i siad on the thread that you yanks can have a holiday in australia and get you tank done by gmc for the said 1800.00 us.
jim
Or they could shout me a holiday over their & I could repair their tank for them ;D

sorry Geoff - can I put the remaining installments on account (on account of I can't pay it????) ;D
I believe the more brushed satin/acid wash look was standard - however after seeing a polished tank thats what I like - always trying to be a bit different.

The brushed look!
PS - sorry if this thread has been hijacked?

Geoff.
With blown up tank its fairly straight, at least straight enough for a rider. Id be happy if you could just make it fit. ;) I will use on my chromed frame Elsinore for dirt track riding.
I have 2 other tanks one you have seen and quoted the other is painted. I will strip paint for it to see which of the 2 tanks is best to restore and send it.
Cheers Quicky.
-
G'day Crabman, what models do you have in this sea of red pic below mate.
CR480RD
CR500 RF or RG
CR500 ???
CR500 ???

-
Rossco. The brushed tank picture is too dull and fully polished a little to bright. Original tanks are somewhere inbetween those two.
-
I agree Quicky - I knew mine was too bright and nothing like original but I also thought the satin finish of the one pictured was too flat.
I asked the guy how he got the satin finish and he didn't answer (I think I have some dedicated tank photos somewhere) but that one above nearly looks painted?
cheers

Rossco.
To get the right amount of gloss on my tank ( once Geoff restores and polishes it ) I was thinking of using small amount of flattener in the clear coat to just dull it off a little bit. Sort of semi gloss clear over the polished tank.
-
let me know how it goes. A friend of mine is an excellent painter and has painted some tanks to look stock but then paint wears off anyway. I would be interested coz now I have my 360 up and running I have been thinking of making a "garage queen" of my 250?
Rossco
-
Whats he using to paint them? 2 pack clear with hardener shouldnt ware too easily. I have used 2k clear on polished alloy mags that has stood test of time for years.
-
Thanks for the photos Crabman. You've got some good looking weapons in that Arsenal! 8)

A production line of Elsinore's under-going restoration in the US. Looks like this is why NOS parts prices are on the rise.
-
as a matter of interest I was forwarded an email the otherr day fom Marty Tripes - ex Team Honda rider from early 80's late 70's. He is getting into making Factory replicas under the MTR banner - CR250's that he claims will be better than the factory bikes of the day.
Will be interesting to see what actually eventuates!
cheers
Rossco
-
Here's Marty on the Elsinore in 73.
-
that's good to hear, someone giving a modern (ish) 2T a big makeover to run with the 4Ts. marty was a good rider despite his weight. though his supercross track record doesn't quite reflect that - watching the world's best sx races dvd's, he won the first one or two (?)supercross's ever held....then some time out...then one or two third places in late seventies and early eighties....then dissappeared again to have a go at the what '83 sx....where he was in third place on first lap before being sideswiped and ate some dirt bigtime and was out with bust shoulder. by that time, he was lets say big, and suspect he backed off after that...
but great to see he's still involved with the sport, and keen to make some competitive two bangers for those few who'd be up for it. the main advantage i can see is they're cheaper to run, so good for up to say A graders who do rebuilds themselves.
-
sorry guys - after reading TwistandShouts reply - I may not have been clear enough - not current bikes is my understanding - but CR250s from the late 70's early 80's!!!
Apparently Terry Good from MXworksbikes has bought the first one.

-
Opening up another can o Worms but, So is a modern replica legal ? I know that the CZ guys bought all the tooling to make there new ones so its based on the same tooling, but if you make it from new technologies is that really a replica or by visuals only ?
-
its allowed in road racing .as long as it looks the same on the outside it should be legal.most people dont have sdt shocks, fork intemals, ignitions, reed valves, heads exhausts any way.so what would it matter if the whole bike was new.
-
Opening up another can o Worms but, So is a modern replica legal ?
Hmmm, have we discussed similar a while back...
Somewhere in the old posts is the question about the Postie bike - who remembers that one?
It went massive and the debate raged over this point: if it hasn't changed then why can't a '98 model (I think) Postie bike be allowed to compete in VMX given the design hasn't changed in 30 something years. :-\ :-X
The Postie thread also sprung to mind when I saw Firkos post elsewhere re the 'modern' Indian Enfield being legal for VMX.
Round two? Bring it on!! ::)
-
nah I aint going there because this also went balistic with the CR450 bit. I am not sure whether Marty is making from scratch aka 2008 models if you like or is restoring old ones as per Vintage Factory.
Anyways I am chickening out - just wouldn't mind seeing an MTR replica regardless!!!!
cheers

Hi Gentleman
I recently found a rolling chasis for a Honda 1975 CR 250, I have subsequently been offerred a similar period MR 250 motor. My recollection is that this is the enduro model of the time, and the MT 250 was the road going model. Am I correct ? Anybody know anything of the differences between the CR 250 and the MR 250. I am led to believe that it is only the porting and even the gear box was the same, just the gearing on the rear wheel.
All advise will be welcome at this time.
Also can somebody affirm to me that the 1975/ 1976 Honda which was red was known as the Fire engine at that it proceeded the Red Rocket.
-
75 CR250 had red sideplates and tank stripe. MT and CR are closely related engines. Not sure how MR engine compairs.
-
The MR250 was a later model than the MT250. The MR250 had a similar motor to the '75 '76 CR250 with the exhaust port exiting on the opposite side of the cylinder to the '74 CR and MT250's.
-
mr/cr250
different ports, different gears.totaly different to mt250
i have a cr and mr motor.
-
Hi jimg1au
Thanks for the feedback, may I ask how similar or diffrent the MR otor is to the CR, would you ID the differences as you see them.
Will the motor slot into the CR frame ?
Any other advice you deem relevant?
Clueless in Africa
Thanks
Gavin Williams
-
gavin
the mr will slot in the cr frame.it would be simillar to the blue it yamaha range.if you port the mr barrell to cr or better specs it would be a great vinduro machine.as you can run lights that work.any way that what i will do with mine if i keep it.
all the parts will interchange with the 75/76 cr.crank the same.cases the same except mr stamped on them.different gear ratios not as close as cr but not as wide as mt.again just like it yamahas.point ignition as cr but has lighting coils.as far as i know rebuilds use the same parts as the 75/76 cr.these have up pipe and 73/74 tank will not fit with up pipe.larger mr250 tanks arnt too dear in the us.
75 cr had black frame 76 cr eveything except motor was red
i have a 73 and 76 cr250 plus the mr250 motor and spare 76 cr250 head and barrell my vinduro project mabe
-
jimg1au
Thank you, really appreciate your help. I will post a photo of the wreck later. -I should get the motor later this week. Thanks and thanks again. Any other info will be greatfully received.
-
I'm almost certain you'll find that MR ratios were actually wider than MT. For some reason Honda went to very wide ratios on the MR. It was one of its shortcomings. As stated above, MR engine is quite a bit diff from MT & very similar to 75-76 CR, but MT gearbox should still fit, if so desired. MT ratios offer a fairly good spread for Vinduro riding.
-
just getting back onto tank finishes - has anybody seen a close up of the Project II Honda brochure? 2 of the photos there show the "new" Elsinore 250 with high polish tanks????? Maybe I am on a winner ???

bad bad bad news, the disease has returned, it did not go away. I have been watching all the XR 75 cc postings, amazing little bikes. I decided I needed an XR 75 CC for my collection. I now have one coming my way. I cant quit buying, help help
-
Nothing wrong with that crabman.the little fellas are easier to jamb in than the bigguns. ;) )what did you score? a project or a completed one?
-
KB 171
I got a rough but complete XR 75. It looks like that I could possibly raid the parts bin of the small Honda's for spares ie the CRF 80 , crf 100 and maybe the odd pit bike.
I will post a before and after pic. The after could take a while. It remains my intention to finnish my RM 370 and the old 1975 cr 250 this year. I have been dreamin about my Ducati 450 for a long while.Firko has been an absolute gentleman in sharing what he has done. I have dedicated the month of December to trying to finalize what I am going to do with the Ducati. This Ducati will be the oldest bike that I have restored and I believe it will be my best resto yet.
Greetings from Africa
Gavin Williams

It's not often I get called a gentleman Gavin! I hope my Ducati tips helped. I've decided to make some drastic changes to my Hindall Ducati as it probably won't be a very competitive motocross bike. I've decided to turn it into a cafe racer/ street tracker/bobber style street bike for some Sunday morning buzzes up the mountains. I've got enough VMX bikes anyway and as the Ducati is too cool to be a garage queen it deserves to be used more than the once or twice yearly Classic Dirt appearances. I'll fit some motard style wheels and brakes which frees up the current Rickman wheels for use on my Cheney Yamaha project, saving me about a grand on wheel builds. Send us some photos of your Duke mate.
-
Hi Firko
will do. I have done nothing on the bike yet. I will also post photo's of the 76 RM 370 and Honda 78 cr 250.
Thanks Gavin
