Title: Check the dump.
Post by: Quicksilver on August 04, 2008, 05:14:05 pm
After reading about Colj500 picking up his XL250 roller at dump I thought I had best use my contact at our local rubbish tip ( His sister married my brother  ;D )  .... It a hill billy thing .... ;) lol..

Looky what he got me today..... ;D plus some roofing iron I was after too.

Not a bad little bike. Mostly complete only real damage is to speedo and headlight  must of happened when it was chucked out of the trailer/ ute. Bloody thing still has key in it.  ;D ;D ;D.

Based on the similarity of the graphics to the ones on my 74 TS185, and the alloy lower fork legs, I'll guess that its a 74 model.

I've got my eye on a 73 (I think) TS125, but the price will be higher than Quickie's score!

Great little bike, our son took the cr125m for a ride on a natural terrain track on the weekend and had a hoot    :o    Didn't come home with much fuel though.  :'(
Should be more of these on the track,if the DO YOU MOTO can be so popular why not these. ?????
Some one start a revival  ;D

Thats in better nick than the TC100 that I got given last week, a top find for a tip bike.  I am glad I am not the only one who looks for bikes at the tip/dump.  Good luck with it.

Bit of a splash with hose made a differance. Quite suprised how soild it is. Seat base is excellent with not hint of rust. Old girl even still has a battery in it  :o. Its got faults as expected the kick start only grabs when it feels like it. Rear wheel has many loose spokes with a few broken ones.
She needs a decent tank as the the tank on it has a large dent on left side its also missing the coil. Speedo and headlight are badly damaged and will need top be replaced. The rear guard has number of splits and will also need replacing.
I will restore this old tub. Dunno why, just feel like doing it. 8)  I will get to it in time. I would be very interested in hering from anyone that has any spares for this little rocket.

yeah, check the dump alright. My fathers stoopid girlfriend thought a good clean up was in order and tossed out a YZ 360 (incomplete but with very straight tank frame and suspension) that i had stashed for a rainy day. I tell you I could have cried when I returned home after living interstate for a few years to find out that it went to the local tip!

A well known Speedway identity and fellow Villawood club member of the '70's tells the story that during the mid '60's he took 3 car boot loads of BSA Gold Star and other old British racing bits and dumped at the Fairfield council dump.

Even in the mid '70's he regreted doing it. But he was philosphical saying because he and others dumped the surpus 'junk' it made what survived that much more valuable ::) ;).

This is the bit that is ironic, you see my fathers stoopid girlfriend has still got the first cent she ever spent so it's safe to say she would have checked the cheapest way to get the bike offloaded. Mundoolun tip (near Jimboomba QLD) is (was) free to the public, but Logan Village tip would probably have cost a nominal fee to dump such items, so my guess would be Mundoolun (she can't remember) But what will haunt her forever is the fact that she junked a very valuble collectors item. So I hope one day when she is watching antiques roadshow or similar, the experts happen to stick it in one more time!!! I'm not very bitter about it though.

My two best dump shop finds to date, $40 for the TM (was missing a tank and the pipe was wrong) and $20 for the italjet.

Over the years I've seen an almost complete XL250 Motorsport and an SL 125 both in bits. Of course at the time I had no where to put them. And to make it worse they wanted about $15 each.

It's amazing what you could find at the dump. A few years ago when vintage was pre '75 and earlier, i found 2 RM250a's, one with no engine at the local tip. I pulled the carby off one of them and left them there thinkin they were useless to me...

I would at least be happy to learn that maybe the bike was saved from being landfill. On another note, I once knocked around with a neighbourhood kid whose father managed the Browns Plains Tip. He seemed to have a new bike every month, one that i recall was a great find was an RM 250 A/B? which only needed petrol and a seat, but after ocky strapping a pillow to the frame and raiding the victa tin we were in business. There should be a special event for old turds you can find at the tip, call it dump class maybe?

Hey rocket i remember him saying the YZ was in the back of a Kombi. The clown cut the straps holding the tank on instead of undoing them when he bought the tank round to find out what it was. I was hoping to make a bike out of it but YZ360b parts are a ridiculous price if you can find any. At least you know where it is now!

This story is choking me up. :'(
I'm reminded of my neighbours little girls losing their cat many years ago.
Whilst they were on holiday the cat was being looked after by friends about twenty miles away.
Cat got out, cat got lost and the girls were heart broken on hearing the news.

Nearly one year later the cat turned up at the girls home.
No doubt an epic adventure to navigate some 20 miles of suburbs!
Cat was a bit stand-offish as cats can be - but understandably miffed.
Annoyed is a better word...

Vandys right, go back to slappin' that woman.

unfknblvable,
did you also notice that the previous owner had also replaced the rear gaurd with a nos item which still has the label attached to the underside of the gaurd? Nice straight tank though. I believe the rest of this bike is floating around Grantham somewhere, thats where it came from. I picked it up about 15 years ago, so I am stretched to remember exactly where, good luck though. I believe there is an annual swap meet out that way, you may been just lucky enough to find the engine stuffed into some home made go-kart or something similar.

I found a SR500 donk at Toronto tip a few years ago and took it home for $20. Few weeks later a mate brought over and SR500 minus top end that he was given so we put the dumpster engine in and with new oil and plug it ran!!! Then subsequently sold it for a handsome amount...

* A few years ago I bought a Mk4 Triumph Metisse less engine from a bloke who had originally found the complete bike on the Inverell tip.

* A Victorian mate was in line to enter the tip a few years ago and happened to look into his rear view mirror and saw handlebars poking from a trailer a few cars behind. As there was a bit of a traffic snag he walked back to the bike and discovered an almost complete Bultaco M11 (Bultaco Metisse) . My mate offered the bloke $50 for the bike and they pulled over and swapped trailer contents. As well as the Bully he got a Deltex Rockhopper and a cherry pre war BSA pushy.

*Another old Vintage racer found a '76 WR250 Husky less motor, One of those mid 80s Kawasaki 250 2 stroke racey type road bikes (KR250?), that just needed plugs to go and a nearly complete KLX 250  all within a fortnight at the Wallgrove tip in Sydneys west.

* Back in the early 90s I was up in Mackay, Qld visiting a mate whose job was to service agricultural pumps and compressors on banana farms and other businesses. I went out with him on his run one day and at the end of the day he had to service a compressor at the local bus depot. As we were leaving we spotted something shiny sitting up on top of a pile of old bus tyres and other dumped shite. On a hunch we walked over to the pile and discovered a straight as a gunbarrel '74 Maico narrow alloy tank. As my mate was an old Maico racer we got a little excited and started to dig through the junk looking for the rest. After an hour we'd managed to find an almost complete '74.5 250, the only things missing being the back wheel, seat, pipe and assorted nuts and bolts. The next day while Rob was working I decided to pull down the engine and discovered that it was on original bore, with little work under its belt. The big end was trashed but other than that it was A1. It even threw a good spark. The back wheel turned up a month or so later at a swap meet, so Rob put the bike back together and raced it in a couple of beach races up there before selling it off to Paul Chipendale who had Andrew Bailey riding it from time to time.

In 1996 we found a complete SL 125 honda at Menai tip that only needed petrol. It was almost completely covered in rubbish  .We still have it on my brothers property. The only work  done on it over the last 12 or so years is a new rear tyre, air filter ,chain and accasional oil change.
About ten children have learned to ride on this bike and it gets a ride nearly every week-end.

Great little bike. My brother calls it the quite achiever.

My MR175 came from the dump as a complete rolling chassis less tank pipe and motor...........six weeks later a mate found the side cover there..........then about six weeks after that a bloke turned up with motor, pipe, tankand allnew engine parts ,still in their wrappers, and said if I didn't want them they were going to the dump..............silly question really !..........turns out it was a bike I had given his brother-in-law about ten years ago..................now I've got three of them.

I grew up in an outer sydney suburb which had the local municipal tip nearby (pushy distance). once or twice a week after school, we'd head down there to scoop up the offerings from the seventies' mass-produced society.  anything and everything was had from metals to jewellry to household goods of every kind to mags (of every kind....) to lawnmowers, bicycles, motorbikes (normally bits of) and cars.  You'd be amazed at the number of old holdens people would drive and leave at the tip when rego ran out.  We trashed scores of them in the scrub in every imaginable way.  We all made small fortunes from onselling retrieved 'junk'.  For some, it was their job and they made big money.  One guy went on to importing container loads of Royal Enfields and things from India.  Same dude ran a corker of a business cleaning out houses of people recently deceased, keeping unwanted valuables as part payment.  Antiques in other words.  Made a fortune.

Got a bit sidetracked and didn't get that picture up when I said. Anyway here it is now. CB100 from the tip. Price $25. ;D
I have given it a good cleaning. Points were closed so I opened them, fuelled it up, hooked up a battery and she ran, sweet little engine without a trace of smoke and no noises or rattles. Still had the key in it.

Other tip find this week is this CB350 twin. Engine turns over and has decent compression. We did a quick search of the metal heap and found the parts scattered around the bike. Unfortunately we couldn't find left muffler, forks, front guard or right hand side cover. This one I will restore. I like the old CB twins. It also has the key. Another $25.  ;D If anyone has the missing parts id be happy to purchase/swap for them. ;)

The 350 is a really excellent score, as people pay big money for those in the post classic vintage road race scene.

Go directly to the metal heap. Search yourself then go to store to pay for it.  ;). GET A RECEIPT with frame and engine number  8). You need to look yourself as most of the folks running tip shops or the staff they use wont pick up this type of thing.
