Hi Everyone,
I am getting conflicting advise. Is body armour compulsory in Classic MX ?
-
l hope not.
-
Not compulsory, but i wouldn't ride without my pressure suit.
Depends what you do for a living maybe? I'm a self-employed chippy, so if i come off the bike and land on my elbow, i'd rather have some body armour between me and the ground.
I think a back protector is mandatory in dirt track

That is correct. Not required according to the 2015 MOMs. I too woudn't ride without it though, saved me way too many times. :-\

I'm on the dole. So if I fall off and get hurt I get to go on disability. More money. Hence no armour. WIN.WIN.
-
Thanks guys. Never used it way back when, but I am older and not as tough as I once was :'(. Any recommendations on what to buy ?
-
When I was young I never seemed to hit my elbows when I crashed (often) Now I'm old and still crashing the FOX elbow guards I wear have saved the day on too many occasions. J
-
Pete, I have had a really good run with a Thor full coverage top, but from what I see on the market, if you are buying new, I would have a real good look at something like this http://www.dirtbikebitz.com/2014-leatt-body-protector-3df-p-25409.html It looks so much more comfortable, and I imagine it is machine washable.
-
I was wearing armor when I got hit by another bike last year. Might have been an unlucky hit but the wheel hit me in the side, under my arm pit, right where there was no protection. Punctured lung, 9 broken ribs & broken scapula. In this particular case the armor was little to no benefit. funny thing is I usually don't wear armor when riding MX, only in the bush.

661 do a couple of pressure suits that are good value. I'd be looking for one that is made up of mesh (so it's not too hot) with hard plastic shoulder and elbow protection.
I've ended up with an alpinestars suit cause it fits well with my neck brace.
-
Is body armour a requirement. NO .... but I feel more protected with it on. Bit like a condom ;)
-
and some sun screen around the lower back area goes a long way hey stu. ;)
-
I keep getting told off by a few mates for wearing my Dainese full body armour. Mainly because it's about 10 or 12 years old! I wouldn't ride without it though, it's saved my elbows, forearms and back on many many occasions with negligible damage. It's plastic shells with a mesh webbing holding it all together and has proven remarkably durable.
Maybe one more year in it I reckon.
-
I forgot my turtle suit armour on a trail ride a couple of years ago. Never been as confident and comfortable... I honestly feel that what I lost in protection, I gained in reduced risk of crashing.
Since then, I've gone back to my old style plastic body armour. It doesn't fill my heart with joy, but it is the best compromise I've found.
-
i use 661 pressure suit, wouldn't leave home without it ,never wore knee guards till i "kneed" my engine case on the way down, fork that hurt, ambo ride 2 days later,(impatient me ::),haematoma bigtime, now when i crash ,unlike J man i always seemed to land on my knees, weird, :P
ps & yes mandatory backprotector Vdt
-
I had a basic slide-out a couple of years back, jumped up got on the bike and kept going. When i got back to the pits later i looked at the elbow guards and the were a series of 5mm deep gouges through them. You're better off dressing for the crash.

one of my first trail rides on my 2005 tm300 i fell off while stopped on a side of a hill.i pushed the bike to the left uphill and i fell into a big hole left from an uprooted tree.stumbling down the hill i saw the tree root systen jutting towards me grabed a sappling and swung my back towards the rootsystem(yes i had my suit on gret back protection must for vdt)hit back first and smashed the back protector as well as 3 ribs and collasped lung.the sappling swing also tore my rotor cuff.yass to sydney was not fun woke up on sutho hospital.
by the way it was the first time i met nathan s and not the last

Compulsory for junior mx
-
Now that I think about it I still have some impressive scars on my elbow that I banged up along with on my side/abdomen where a stick almost gave me a appendectomy.
Thanks for the advise I wasn't going to worry about it but I will go out and buy some.
-
I don't really want to think about how old my Dianese armour is, but it has some scars to prove that wearing it is worth the bit of extra heat. There are scars on the shoulders, back, forearms and chest, all of which would of been my skin and or bones getting abused. Now I feel like I'm missing something if I don't wear it. The last time I went for a "quick" ride down the back and didn't bother putting it on, a wallaby decided to attempt a crash tackle when I had the 'berg blasting along beside rail tracks and I ended up with arms full outstretched as my ribs hit the rail. 3 broken ribs and some missing bark later........ I don't leave home without it. Rules or no rules.

Hi Everyone,

Ok here are the facts up until this rule amendment was posted by MA on the 22 January http://ma.org.au/index.php?id=141 (http://ma.org.au/index.php?id=141) Body armour with back protector was compulsory for Classic MX as well as Classic DT.
How did this happen you ask.
Well in the 2013 MOMS it said a back protector was compulsory for Classic DT same as modern DT. When the MOMS went to being online and the rules were re-written with some sections from the old "all discipline" section. Someone just transferred the rules from Dirt Track for protective clothing. So not only was body armour etc compulsory for Classic MX in the 2015 MOMS but it was also in the 2014 MOMS.
MA will address a problem when it occurs.
So body armour/back protection is not compulsory for Classic MX now!!!
But it may pay to download the PDF file and print it off. I intend to do just that.
If in doubt ask. But ask the right people.

You'll need to get yourself a 1300 number

What I meant was, ask MA.
I knew there was a problem there so I just emailed MA.

was advised to get one, bought a 661 pressure suit and about 30 seconds after heading off couldn't tell I was wearing one - absolutely love it, it is mesh and very comfortable - and has a built in kidney belt also.

I've got a 661 pressure suit too Ross and I love it. I'm going to but a neck brace soon, so I guess I will find out if the two are compatible :-\

My suit is one of the cheaper models of 661. Old model Leatt Adventure.
They work fine together, but it takes a bit of planning.
Put suit on, don't zip it up all the way.
Put jersey on.
Feed the Leatt into the armour/jersey. I always need help with this.
Reach under your jersey and zip the armour right up.
Tuck in jersey.

Sounds a bit tricky ::). I was looking at the alpine stars neck brace.
Having someone help is an issue. I usually go to the races with Mainline. He's flat out gettin himself to the line on time. Let alone having time to help me :o :o :P
I could always get an umbrella girl I suppose :-\
-
Umbrella girl sounds like the go, had to get Nathan to take my pants off in Canberra once??? but that's another story :o :o :o ;)

Cause i'm usually helping you re-attach your exhaust, get your front brakes working, getting your throttle to work, look for a spark on the YZ disco ball etc..........

You've clearly already got both in Mainline?

No one is saying don't wear one. All that has occurred is the rule is still the same for Classic/Post Classic and modern MX.
I haven't got full body armour but I have been thinking about it.
-
correct its now not compulsory to wear them and has been removed by a recent bulletin to fall in line with modern MX, although i personally believe it should be and MA should too if its serious about its insurance plans.
The fact Modern currently dont ask for some back protection is but a number of reason they get the most over whelming claims from that sport and because we don't you think it would be them needing to follow us, but go figure. Personally I think your a monkey as the guys above say if you don't where some kind of Armour or protection, a handlebar or peg in the back can make you paraplegic, so getting sweaty and looking uncool is a small price to pay for the luxury of walking.
-
If Chad doesn't need it, I don't!
-
I had a full pressure suit but I found it to hot and restricting for me so I sold it and went back to the old style armour.
I did one race with no neck brace and armour God I feeled so free but it's only takes one get off with out the protection and you wish you had it on.
Chad doesn't wear it because it slows you down and wears you out .
-
I wear a combo of mx style armour, elbow pads, kidney belt and neck brace that require a bit of a ritual to get on right and the whole ensemble is a bit restrictive but I now feel a bit weird riding without it. Wish i'd had the armour on when i f**ked my shoulder...
I've been thinking about one of those all in one suits for a while. Has anyone got any experience with this line of products?

yes - this is similar to the 661 pressure suit - I don't wear a neck brace but find the suit the "ducks nuts"!

I thought the same with mine. I pop riveted the back, back together and thought "This will see me out". I had been eyeing out the new Leatt suit.
Next ride came down hard and broke three ribs and a collarbone. When I hit the ground I could feel the age of the Dianese and thoughts of the Leatt went through my mind. The Leatt wouldn't of stopped the injury, but it may of taken the edge off it. Anyway I can now justify a new pressure suit.

I don't wear anything other than my riding jumper.. copped a large rock from the back of a pre 65 500 at Port Augusta on my chest during the start of one of the races..didn't notice it until I was having a shower at Eucla on the way home.. :-[.. any way.. where there is no fence there is no ceiling...err.. sense there is no feeling..!!
