Hi Everyone,
I am getting conflicting advise.    Is body armour  compulsory in Classic MX ?

Not compulsory, but i wouldn't ride without my pressure suit.

Depends what you do for a living maybe? I'm a self-employed chippy, so if i come off the bike and land on my elbow, i'd rather have some body armour between me and the ground.

I think a back protector is mandatory in dirt track

That is correct. Not required according to the 2015 MOMs. I too woudn't ride without it though, saved me way too many times. :-\

I'm on the dole. So if I fall off and get hurt I get to go on disability. More money. Hence no armour. WIN.WIN.

When I was young I never seemed to hit my elbows when I crashed (often) Now I'm old and still crashing the FOX elbow guards I wear have saved the day on too many occasions. J

Pete, I have had a really good run with a Thor full coverage top, but from what I see on the market, if you are buying new, I would have a real good look at something like this http://www.dirtbikebitz.com/2014-leatt-body-protector-3df-p-25409.html It looks so much more comfortable, and I imagine it is machine washable.

I was wearing armor when I got hit by another bike last year. Might have been an unlucky hit but the wheel hit me in the side, under my arm pit, right where there was no protection. Punctured lung, 9 broken ribs & broken scapula. In this particular case the armor was little to no benefit. funny thing is I usually don't wear armor when riding MX, only in the bush.

661 do a couple of pressure suits that are good value.  I'd be looking for one that is made up of mesh (so it's not too hot) with hard plastic shoulder and elbow protection.

I've ended up with an alpinestars suit cause it fits well with my neck brace.

I keep getting told off by a few mates for wearing my Dainese full body armour. Mainly because it's about 10 or 12 years old!  I wouldn't ride without it though, it's saved my elbows, forearms and back on many many occasions with negligible damage. It's plastic shells with a mesh webbing holding it all together and has proven remarkably durable.

Maybe one more year in it I reckon.

I forgot my turtle suit armour on a trail ride a couple of years ago. Never been as confident and comfortable... I honestly feel that what I lost in protection, I gained in reduced risk of crashing.

Since then, I've gone back to my old style plastic body armour. It doesn't fill my heart with joy, but it is the best compromise I've found.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.
