There on this weekend at the old Lakeside track, QVMX have a display at the SHANNONS big rig transporter [ got to try and convert some of those tar babies...LOL]. Come and say gidday, the racing will be awesome. This meeting is huge, practice Thursday, qualifying Friday, racing Sat and Sun. Graeme Crosby and Kork Ballington are just some of the legends there. There's a few VMXers there already soaking it up. The club running the event [QEMSC] had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get this meeting happening.....NOISE being the big issue. If you have never been to Lakeside then go have a look, it's a very cool track. I wonder if Lozza will be there? 8)

Been here since Thursday and having a ball. I wish I was able to afford to road race again :)
If you live close enough and can get out here then do so because there will be some great racing to enjoy :)
-
See you there !

Big storm on thursday arvo, someone should be spanked for that new Bus Stop. Great to see Lakeside back in full use

Cam Donald's Suzuki XR69 [#86] was bloody fast, Mal Campbell's TZ750 [ bike with the yellow tank had issues but was blindingly fast as well ].....the amount of beautifully prepared bikes puts a lot of shame to some of the bikes that turn up to VMX meets. 400 riders entered including 40, yes 40 sidecars!....again, puts shame to the Aussie VMX titles. Great crowd numbers, if only we could pull half this amount you would throw a party. They obviously know something we don't. Our VMX bike display at the Shannons Insurance big rig is getting a lot of traffic, if only we could get some of that money and the riders from the road racers to come over to the "dark side".... 8). It's been a long time since I have seen bikes at Lakeside, was spectacular then as it is now. One glaringly obvious standout is how NOISY the single and twin cylinder 4 stroke bikes are......and how 2 strokes kick 4 strokes arses........don't worry about banning the burka......ban the 4 stroke!!!!. Can't wait for tomorrow's racing to start. Lisa has picked out a new RR sidecar..... ;D....she's hooked.

Love the Koning thanks for the pics
-
Yea, the "outboard" powered Konig is pretty trick. I will take some more pickies tomorrow, there's a real cool HRD Vincent Black Shadow.

The Vincent is a bit second hand after crashing off the main straight in the 2nd to last race today :(

If its the same one that I think it is , it is an every bit hand built/cast replica of one , a beautiful piece of work by its maker

Yep was a brilliant weekend however not the finish anyone could have wanted. I believe the rider in question was Steve Anderson riding the GSXR750 number 35 I think. We left an hour or so ago and the "authorities" including numerous QPS vehicles were still at the crash scene.
RIP :(
-
Yes, after such a great start to bike racing at Lakeside the death of the rider has put the worst type of damper on the whole meeting. My condolences to the riders family and friends. Lisa scored a ride in the Gogomobile, the Shannons people are absolutely fantastic. Our VMX display was flat out all day, lets hope we get some new converts out of it. The crowd today was way bigger than yesterday, it was huge. There's a couple of photo's of the race HRD Vincent, one of Greg Hansfords KR's, a Coleman Suzuki [NZ] TR500, a Std Vincent Black Shadow. Will put some more photo's up later. On a brighter note, there's a huge Broadford Bonanza type event going to happen next year at Qld Raceway, I will keep you informed as I get more info and we work out more details. Next year is going to be as busy as this year.

Just read the sad news :-[

yep,rip Steve, not good, sorry guys, musta walked past the shannon bus a dozen times with my eyes shut, was basically pitted below it,just up from popeye for the 4 days, interesting storm, shit it flooded the pits bigtime, helmets, leathers, gloves floating around,(along with power cords/generators still running :o)big surprise for guys returning next day after leaving early before the storm, track was good, new bus stop not a big hit with anyone,i'd forgotten how fast it was, ended up running with Phillip island gearing sunday!,good crowds both days, even the helio doing joy flights was old school (pre 75??), :P
-
Talked to Craig today, he has a broken collar bone as well as 2 broken ribs and a broken scapular anybody with any footage of the accident is asked to get in touch the relevant authorities, Craig is pretty sure he remembers what happened but they want to make sure, still left an empty feeling in the gut after such a great weekend...
-
Meet some interesting people on the weekend at the VMX display, one guy from Auckland was admiring the YZ250A and told me when he was a kid they had one [early 90's] and when he bought a "modern" bike [YZ250G] put the motor out of the YZ250A in a gokart.....and ended up throwing the rest of the bike in the rubbish tip. He cant remember what happened to the gokart. Makes you shudder where a lot of bikes have ended up.
-
Still a heck of alot out there Tatey, since this Vinduro WA thing kicked off the amount of pre85 trail/enduto bikes is amazing. 8) :P

Photo's from the top....
1/ Mint H2 Kwaka, has pommy built chambers on it....Sunday cruiser.
2/ Early TKA tandem twin KR250.....look at the motor....it's sideway's....what Kork Ballington and Greg Hansford rode to 1st and 2nd in the world championships.
3/ Wayne Gardiners 1980 Moriwaki Kawasaki that he raced here, in the States and the UK. [a replica he had built....the real thing is in the Moriwaki museum in Japan]
4/ RG500 box 4, rotary valve and TZ500.
5/ Spondon framed TZ250 and 350.
6/ HL500 replica road racer.
7/ Simo's mates Triton, the front brake on this is an MV Augusta 8 leading shoe brake [was NOS not long ago], it was made by Ceriani [yes the fork manufacturer], he worked for Count Augusta before he went out on his own making forks. This brake assembly cost $6000.00....there where so many cool bikes there.

Do you mean 4 leading shoe brake or are there actually 4 shoes each side?
6/ HL500 replica road racer.
Gimme a break ???
-
I think the brake does have 8 shoes in it. Spondon's are Derek Brown's , nobody has mentioned Peggy Hyde who was the first woman in Australia to gain a competition licence (apparently she should have caused lots to give up racing if they were good to their word). She did a few laps on a CB 125.

Murray Sayle has this bike. Motor is in the right way trust me ;) Might have seen this one go around, get to spend a bit of 'quality time' on the dyno with the owners and this bike :D

The thing that spins me out is the cost of things in the road racing scene. Regardless of how many bloody shoes the thing has, that brake is literally unobtainium. A replica is worth $6k but an original MV Augusta one like that ... well if you wanted it for your MV then you'd be ponying up $10K for it or forget it. If you want to do one on the cheap, you can buy a old GT750 hub and then (to comply with the Classic regs), fit a set of replica sand cast CB77 or CB72 backing plates etc. By the time you do that and lace it into a wheel, get the pads and mechanisms all sorted, you've spent $5K .. on a front wheel ffs !!!!!!!
The gearbox they just put in this Triton (yes it's pre unit) was worth $6K .. the bike as it sits cost well over $100K to build and it's still only 736cc .. not even stroked yet .... tyres .. try $600 a set and they last a couple of races .. 3 max before they go off. Entry fee for two bikes for the weekend with a shed (try a roof over your flooding pits) was around $500!!! Cheap apparently when compared to the Island Classic at Phillip Island at closer to $800.
It's been 22 years since I was road racing and I'd forgotten how expensive it is .. and how bloody cheap VMX is.
Think about that next time you're contemplating putting a new tyre on the rear on your fully restored YZ or CZ that you picked up from some poor sap for $4 or $5K.
-
Always expensive to play with the big boys plenty run RS 125's on the smell of a oily rag. Island Classic entry fee is about $380 the extra comes in from the track day on the thursday and pit garage hire. $200 a day sounds reasonable to run around a track in as good a condition as what PI is. Organisers were a bit swamped with the number of entries for Lakeside so the number of laps suffered. Let's hope they address the concerns of competitors and keep a iconic track in use.

I showed Steve Roberts this photo when I picked up my better than new CZ tank today & he called it the "Sayonara special", he showed me a photo of is slightly older sister bike & pointed out the difference in seat units. He was stoked to see the photo
I was surprised to see the original aluminium monocoque F1 Suzuki in the shed & had to laugh when he told me the story of Guy Martin crawling over & under it studying it when he was over with his father

Very happy with how it came out, hadn't decided on paint or polish but the decision has been made for me. Almost a shame to get it dirty
-
Very nice..
-
That bloke's a genuine wizard ! Did you know he also did some of Graham McRae's cars, notably the GM9 that ran in CanAm briefly...sorry no photobucket these days (just google image for McRae GM9)...and many of the McIntosh Manx Norton tanks as well.
Those Coleman TR500s are lovely in the flesh, almost Italian in their curvature... 8)
-
I'm pretty sure he still does the Mac tanks. Those monocquoc superbikes he made are awesome as well.
-
I was told it was 8 leading shoe brake and I thought that HL replica was one of your frames....LOL. ;D
Can't see how??
I can only see 2 pivots for a cam, could they be 8 shoes but 4 leading & 4 trailing??
Surely 4 leading shoes each side would need 4 shafts for 4 cams would it not?
-
I'm pretty sure he still does the Mac tanks. Those monocquoc superbikes he made are awesome as well.
He does still do the tanks for Ken McIntosh, has the only known original Irish featherbed framed Norton coming for repairs after I got crashed at Goodwood this year
If you look in the thread on Aussie & NZ frame builders at the photo of the Sparton in his workshop you'll see skeletons for tanks hanging from the roof, he had a few fibreglass seat units up there as well

I thought about this, maybe each side has 4 shoes with narrow shoes side by side and longer cam shafts with each working two shoes. Maybe for cooling.

knock yourselves out! ;D, :P
ps Greg Dalsanto on the P5 maico 440,
pommies did a ds4 leading front brake, see one you wont forget it!,that "MV" fronts gotta be ds twin leading, you can see the lower pivot point for front shoe,(& not enough actuating arms),the DS4L has 4 arms/levers each side :o
-
I still haven't found a image of a DS4L shoe brake but isn't it funny how after all that work the disc brake just made it obsolete.
-

Double sided 4 leading shoe
-
Now you're talking, that's a CMA brake, often mistakenly attributed to Dave Degens.
-
When you see the size of some of those big drum brakes it makes you wonder why they didn't just make them slightly bigger & ditch the spokes

Same as above, they were built by Cerhan Mackay Automotive and distributed by Degens, who used them on a couple of his own Dresda Triton race bikes. John Cerhan was a noted specials builder in the 1970s, building Tritons, Vintons etc.
