Title: Bruce Magoo McFarland Trophy
Post by: Shane W on July 15, 2014, 12:06:56 pm
Guys does anyone know what is happening with this trophy at present?

It was last handed out at the Vintage Mr Motocross meeting (I think).

I know that the Heaven club did not have a meeting to run the trophy at and that is why it was past to the VMM meeting.

If it is just "sitting around" maybe it could be returned back and (I can't speak for the QVMX) be given out at the other track he truly enjoyed at Connondale.

I do not want to step on toes here so please correct me if it is still being presented. I donated the trophy and this I why I ask as it was meant to be a perpetual trophy.

Just putting it out there.

He did a lot for the sport and was a great bloke and it would seem a shame for it not to be in use.

Regards

Graham Simonidis won it at the 2012 Classic Nats. I won it in 2013, Freaky in 2011 (I think).
I have never seen that trophy. We were presented ( Graham and I) with tankards, so an earlier recipient must have the perpetual trophy

No Col different award.

This was first given out at the 2010 (again I think) CRC meeting for pre 85/Evo bikes

Pokey that was the first year.

It was the one held the next year. It was only held the 2 years.

It could well have been Dean again but not sure.

Shane,
Yes Dean won the trophy. However he declined to take them with him. Glenn Pickering is the man to speak to.

Can someone tell me about this cool trophy, like how is it competed for. I vaguely remember hearing about it but I can't remember what it is for and I really would like to know.
Magoo was a "good bastard" every time I meet him, and its a prick that the good ones can get taken to soon, today we said good-bye to my cousins' son (22yrs old) real outdoors and hard charging sportsman.

I will stand corrected but it was intended to be a special Trophy Race at Heaven's flagship event for Evo and Pre-85 bikes, the Evo Challenge.

For reasons I don't recall, the inaugural Magoo Memorial race was at the 2010 Crawford River Classic (Heaven's flagship event for Pre-70 ~ Pre-78 bikes). I do recall that it was so well subscribed that they had to run qualifying heats, and a final.

In 2011 and 2012 the trophy was awarded at the Mr VMX meetings. Mr VMX didn't go ahead in 2013, so this memorial trophy is currently in limbo, which is a shame.

I do not believe the awards at the Nats was actually for this trophy but I will stand corrected if someone knows for certain.

The Magoo trophy was won both years at the Mr VMX meeting by Dean. He left the trophy with the Hunter Club who ran the meeting in 2011 & 2012. I have been informed it is still displayed at Barlleigh Ranch track.

The trophy was orginally awarded at a Heaven event, which I believe was the CRC. It was awarded to the winner of the EVO/Pre85 race at that event. It was not carried on for some reason although I suspect it was because the CRC was a Pre78 and earlier focus event and it was to be awarded at the EVO Challenge but that did not happen for some reason. This was all before the current committee was elected. Again I will stand corrected if someone knows for certain.

I believe the original winner was from Queensland and the 'sponsors' or provider of the excellent trophy, which I believe was Shane himself (again I would welcome confirmation of that) was generous enough to allow the organisers of the Mr VMX meeting to hold a special event for the trophy. The top ten place getters from the four ERA Mr VMX events did one last Moto to decide the Magoo trophy winner as a sort of ultimate award for the meeting which was the trophy. I was fortunate enough in the 2011 event to be running third in that race behind Dean (he was miles, literally, ahead) in the knee deep mud of that meeting until I face planted  :-[.

We had considered approaching the 'owners' (Shane) to seek approval to award the throphy to the winning team of our MX des ERA event at next weekends EVO Challenge meeting. We were a little too embarrased to approach anyone because the Heaven Club did not treat the award with due respect when it was orginally part of our program years ago.

Gents, the Magoo Clubman award that has been on offer for the last couple of years at the Nats was donated by me with approval from Anne and also approval from the club hosting the championshp.  Entirely different to the perpetual award Shane has above - and I was unaware of.

I also thought the world of Magoo and the lengths he would go to for others so decided to donate a trophy at each of the Nats - yep the award Freaky won, Col won etc. in memory of Magoo and hence the CLubman title it received.

Actually Freaky - any chance I can do the same again this year at the SA Nats?

Thanks for the replies guys, and yes as all trophy's deserve respect but above all they need to be battled for, that's how we show respect for the trophy and remembrance to who's honour is bestowed on it.

I think you are right in that the "Magoo Award" I referred to was not a race, but a recognition of outstanding service to the sport or similar and named "Magoo Clubman Award" It was instigated by Ross Campbell and the trophy paid for by him.
Doesn't help you find the perpetual trophy though

Has got to stay in NSW, Heaven EVO Challenge would be a good event ?? Just my thoughts.

Heaven VMX is correct. It was put forward by myself and "donated" to the Heaven VMX club to be raced for at the 2010 CRC.

Now the club runs the CRC as a pre 78 event and it was good of them to put it on the same event as it shows their respect for Bruce.

I have no concern as to where a event is run as long as one is run. The owner of the Trophy is the Heaven VMX club and not me.

I only put it forward as it is 2 years since the trophy was awarded and it was a shame to see it was not being used. I only put forward to Conondale thing as a suggestion and as far as I am concerned it should be given at a Heaven VMX event.

Many thanks for the input guys.

Just a foot note. It was donated by me (not my company) and was done so to keep the "trophy and the man as the focus" but a lot of input by Ribbo and the then Heaven VMX club committee (it was their idea I just ran with it). After the first run CRC event (whish I ran at and yes it was over subscribed again as a show of respect to Bruce) the Heaven club did not have an event to run it at and that is why it went to Vintage Mr Motocross. The Evo challenge would be a perfect race for it in my eyes but again it is the members of Heaven VMX trophy.

Shane you will be pleased to know that the
Bruce 'Magoo' McFarland Trophy
was competed for by 12 Teams of 3 riders today at the Inter-club meeting of Heaven VMX and Northern Dist MCC (Retro MX) clubs at the Cessnock MX track.

The event was ran along the MX des Nations format and we called it the MX des ERA  ;).

It was a team competiton (teams were selected by lottery) each team was made up of 3 riders from different classes
Rider 1 - Pre75, Pre78 or EVO 125
Rider 2 - EVO 250, EVO 500 or Pre85 125
Rider 3 - Pre85 250, Pre85 500 or Pre90

Moto 1 had riders 1 & 3 from each team
Moto 2 had riders 2 & 3
Moto 3 had riders 1 & 2

Bruce would have loved it because it was a cunning and devious plan  ;) ;D to bring the differing class riders together into teams with every riders performance counting  8)

Will have a photo of the winners shortly. There was actually a tie on point between two teams with the winning team decided on a count back  8)

The winning team was
Scott Grant YZ400D '77
Shaun Tomkins KX250 '79
Cameron Bullen CR500 '88

The runner up team
Sean Hardman Husky CR250 '73
Carl Rindlesbacher YZ250H '81
Sean Guerin CR500 '89

The Coulda, Shouda and BUGGAs will be discussed for months ;D Bruce would be laughin' big time

Cameron is 17yo he gets his licence in a week  ;) and he rode a '88 CR500 like he was born on it. He also rode a YZ250H in EVO, YZ125 in Pre85

Watching Liam Beverly, Carl Rindlesbacher and Cameron in EVO 250 all YZ250H on Saturday was just great along with Alex Middleton on a C&J 500 in EVO 500 gave us a touch up, I did get him on the start of one moto  8) :D well for a few corners anyway.

All of these guys ride moderns but also have a full Vintage season and all except Alex came though as juniors in the Heaven Club and Alex has been around Vintage MX through his dad Dave and has already put dibs on the C&J for the future 8)

It was excellent to see these guys ride I love seeing our old bikes being ridden with the 'ride it to win' attitude we had when we were 18 and the bikes were new.

Yeah, "LOP sponsored" Birko, there must have been three lines, as the leaders are already out of picture. You rode well thru that lot.
As Scrivo said at riders breif..."there ARE sheep stations on the line!"
(again - Magoo woulda been proud)
