Title: The 2014 Harrow Vinduro thread!
Post by: Tex on June 24, 2014, 10:30:35 pm
This is the place to discuss all matters related to the biggest vinduro event on the calendar - Harrow!

First of all, the theme for 2014:

We've had state and international challenges in the past, but this year we've decided to go with something completely new: Oriental vs Occidental, Japanese vs Rest of the World, Big 4 vs Everyone Else...

Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki & Kawasaki

versus

Can-Am, Husqvarna, Maico, Beta, Rokon, Triumph, Penton, BSA, CZ, Hodaka, Jawa, Moto Villa, CCM, Harley Davidson, SWM, Montesa, KTM, Bultaco, MZ, BMW, Benelli, Fantic, Hercules, etc, etc...

As everyone knows, this is not a competitive event, so the theme is just a bit of fun. However we plan to award a trophy, that might even become a perpetual one. This also means that everyone will automatically be in a team when they enter. So let's get the trash talk happening!

Check out the Breaking News section of the VERi website for rambling and ranting, and you can email us any comments that we'll post there too.

Remember to keep all ribbing and comments nice please  ;).

We will of course continue to run the three man team option as well, so feel free to talk up any rivalries in that regard too.

Tex

There is a team from the ACT

As it turns out they are very very very shaky

They may look real sleek

But let it be known they very partial to a swim in the Harrow creek

Last year they got lucky because it was very wet and mucky

This year it will be dry and fast , and other teams are asking "can they possibly last"

They ride KTM's , so no one knows if they will even go , because the their history will tell you so

At the end of July , "Men from the Capital" there will be nowhere to hide just a very long ride and with some luck on your  side your team may just finish the ride.

I believe that as well as the fuel dump point, there will be "Euro Repair Stations" dotted at approx 20km intervals to ensure our European brothers at least get 1 lap in :P

News Just in!! There will only be 3 ERS points this will mean that any bike of European persuasion that is unable to complete the final leg will be shown respect as we are arranging several Polaris quads to Tow them to the finish line. Of Course the Yamaha Quads will be on standby to tow the Polaris Quads but thats a whole other war :P

There is an old Welshman going to Harrow who's chance of finishing on Gold are very very narrow

Away now he may be , in Wales at the Two Day he would be , which presents a good chance for me to take the tomahawk to he.

And as good as he may seem , He is always rejected by the good team

And as much as he will belly ache we say get lost will you for god's sake

Jap crap or Euro depending on what's his current like , He puts up a good fight but can never get the gold finish in his sights.

There is a very good chance he will grow very old and never  get any Harrow gold

With that all said we finally say

In the Glenelg River we have seen him quiver and time and time again fail to deliver , lets hope this year  he's got some fight to finally hold the gold on Sunday nite.

Does ERS stand for emergency Rescue stations  ...

If you have not got enough  4 wheelers I suppose all the Jap bikes can take tow rope to help them get back to the finish.

There was a man called The Stig

And from reports he must not be real big

You know ,one of the lad's he say to me the Stig he only rides a GT 80

So if the weathers no so Stella and the GT 80 you know she's gone to hella , no big worry at least we will be able to carry the little fella

You know the same lad he also say to me , Stig ,that little fella is pretty fast and the GT-80 if she lasts  will insure that the mighty Stig has a blast.

You know just latley we have 100's and 175's , but Stig matey , bless you for riding a GT 80

"Here we go for the final pass ",

Here  go;s the Stig flying round on the homeward lap he is bound , he rode his 80 , three laps matey, "270km Matey" , and thats got to be record somewhere latley ,  he walks to dais ,  everyones gone  but now he's tall and dont feel old because above his head he hold's the gold

Dennis we hear you loud and clear , but sorry KTM man that was just last year.

The Teams come and The teams they go , we hope this years your KTM's will actually go.

First year lucky and good job too , but the second year will tell , if you and your team have what it takes to and not fall in the river again and get the shakes.

The last week-end in July will be time to tell if the KTM will again do well , i think their time runs out fast and the KTM team will be lucky to finish and will probably run last.

They will sit at the Parc Ferme broken hearted whilst there bikes are trailered and carted.

I guess bronze , silver and gold never matter as long long as you hit the river with a splatter.

Husky verses KTM  would have an interesting  twist if the KTM team would learn to twist their right wrists

So for KTM and Canberra i have no further to say except we will see who's team wins on the days.  8)

There are thousands of images of disintegrating Euro/Brit/Nth American bikes from before 1985, many of them taken on showroom floors, however some people would find these images too graphic and disturbing. Geoff was just being kind.

Shoey's poetic aspirations have come as a shock to everyone, including his colleagues on the VERi committee!

Well said, but I see Shoey's poetry may be just that as well, laughable fun. Lets hope so anyhow. Just for fun and practice, or go mainstream enduro.

OH OH Dennis you have missed the pun

For this  is page to have some fun.

We will talk up  for all we can , because you're  choice of bike will make you a second year also ran

Come one and come all , for this is the place to give some and get some in the face , sometimes the comments may make you flinch , but let it be known an olive leave wont get you an inch.

This is the best event on the Calender you see and Harrow in July is the place to be , no matter what you ride or on what side , this is the page for a good old broadside.

Bring it on one and all , for this the  page to build up the short and cut down the tall

These ditti's are not to offend but are just to have some fun right to the end.

The end is the best week end in July and its the best event of the year if  you want to fly , wether you walk , help out , ride or just sit in the sun our events are about having  fun

So it seems the poet of the page has someone in a rage, Tho it was not on his agenda and he didn't want to offend Ya.

The sea of calm has been broke and his comments can't be revoked,

So to to the keyboard we all sail, using words as a Flail.

All the time with tongue in cheek  to ensure the response that we seek.

The Harrow forum brings it out, so have a go, sledge and shout.

It's all in fun as Shoey said so don't let it go to yr head.

The Rising Sun will prevail on the day, leaving the europeans in dismay  ;D

80-85 being a husky rider you need a new tyre and we as Husky riders could not bear for you to get a flat tyre and retire

There are men and makes we as Husky men must beat and with our news tyre they wont be able to stand the heat because we will be on fire.

The other brands have desire but are no chance when we have new  tyres , they will see our bikes with new tyres and immediately they will lose their fire .

The other brands are there to beat because and with new tyres we will blow them off their seats.

They may text and they may tweet but with us and new tyres they just can't compete

Mr Wombat your words ring true , but here's a return for you

It may be case for the rising sun to prevail but only because the Jap's copied our sail.

As the British found in the sixty when the Jap's took all there trickies

In the 70 -80's the Jap's bikes they did prevail , and with great ease they made the sales.

With all best riders on board they really did attract the hoards

But from the 90's to now we Euro's have made the climb back and have been giving back to you jap's in the crack.

Ah ha

There was a young Rookie from Nantuckit

and he rode an old Jap rust bucket

It was made from TM bits he found at the tip ,he ended up going  to  a wrecker to get a Montessa because the TM was an absolute depressor.

Another bad choice  for the new toy  only made him sadder than ever.

Then one day while was away he heard a man say there's great bike for sale at the end of the way.

To his relief it was it was beyond belief it was one of the marquee brand , from that day on he was happy upon the marquee Husqvarna brand.

Oriental vs Occidental, Japanese vs Rest of the World, Big 4 vs Everyone Else...

Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki & Kawasaki

versus

Can-Am, Husqvarna, Maico, Beta, Rokon, Triumph, Penton, BSA, CZ, Hodaka, Jawa, Moto Villa, CCM, Harley Davidson, SWM, Montesa, KTM, Bultaco, MZ, BMW, Benelli, Fantic, Hercules, etc, etc...

What about guys that have put a Japanese motor in a Euro frame (like an XL motor in a Maico frame) in order to make it go faster and make it more reliable?
Which team will these poor disenchanted souls enter?

he (the mad 8 y/o) would need to be fully entered as a rider for the insurance and probably wont make the minimum age of 48 ;D

call from the promoters at this point as to if there's an lower age limit...I scanned the "fine print" but couldn't see anything (its too fine :o).

it would be an adventure for an 8 y/o doing a lap of harrow that's for sure

Entries for the Harrow 100 are starting to hit the P O Box hard and fast unlike some of the jap. bikes on any course set this year.

Having said that , get your entries in , particularly those who would like a UVP (Unregistered vehicle permit)

The entries received to date have the Occidental entries level pegging with the other P'sOS, I mean, Orientals.  ;)
Pre-entry numbers are strong even at this early stage so get in and secure an early(ish) start position. Be a bit handy for the Orientals as chances of their recovery will be greater if there are more riders behind them.......

they would be all reverse gears as well..... I saw a mate of mine years ago decide to race in the Bendigo Boxing day speedway ...the week before. he got a slider frame from somewhere and a bultaco pursing or astro motor off Johhny Maclean (in a box under a bench in an open farm shed) and 24 hrs later it was assembled and running as crisp as a smiths.

He fluffed the start in his race then in the first 2 laps passed everyone like they were standing still until he challenged for 1st when the nice bloke from nsw pushed him out into the fence. He lost about 4 places then got back into it and on the last lap came up to pass the 1st guy again and who once again drifted wide and put him into the fence..it was on in the pits thats for sure...

the moral of the story Brendon... start spinning spanners and you could have the IT on the front row of the Harrow Grid ;D

Post by: HVA61 on July 12, 2014, 04:08:36 pm
We are currently working on the Rec, rego situation and we will advise the members when we have a resolution

At the present time we have for our members the choice of UVP (unregistered vehicle permit) or Red plate rego.

Entries for the Harrow 100 are now at or above 88

Plenty of teams have already entered, with a good spread of brands.

Big event ,big course , big entry numbers

The Harrow 100 is going to be a cracker.

1 lap Saturday afternoon and as many as you can do on Sunday(whilst the course is open).

The team that are marking the course are primed.

Don't forget if you want to attend the dinner on the Saturday nite at the Town hall let us know with your entry.

The annual general meeting for the VERi club is prior to the dinner on Saturday

The Town hall is only a 3.0 minute walk from the camping area and a 2.0 minute walk from the pub.

Its a fun night , with a superb meal

Most importantly if you want a UVP (unregistered vehicle permit) get it in as the application for the UVP's closes very soon. As advised on the entry form UVPs were due by July 11th 2014.

Hi Luffy

Thanks for asking that important question and I'm happy to confirm that you really did reach the right conclusion about the riders of oriental equipment , "however"
you also need to consider in your time calculations and allowances the levels of inebriation of the individual.  When you consider the one step forward and one step back part of the calculation, when the level of inebriation passes level 8 , it could indeed be more than a two minute walk .

Traffic , although a minor determining factor in the calculation , it must still be considered. When we were at Harrow last month , one nite we saw two cars after 8.00pm.

Kind regards

Shoey

'Up for grabs' is a 2014 Harrow Gold medal

Normally one must ride endless hours through mud, slop, sand, creeks, hills, off cambers and over logs all the while continually looking for rare to find arrows in order to find the direction back to the Parc Ferme.
But why go through all that when you can just buy one ahead of time and then brag to all your mates that you earned an elusive Harrow Gold Medal (by way of your healthy bank account)

This item is particularly sought after by owners of European brands as they don't usually make it to the finish, Japanese owners please be aware you may end up bidding against some desperate owners of European machinary that have only ever seen a Harrow Gold medal in the hands of there mates who own Japanese bikes.

Then again if you think this too expensive you could just pay $60.00 entry fee and ride the 3 loops and acquire your gold medal honestly.
You will need a road bike licenceand a pre 85 registered bike (Classic rego is the go these days)

Cochon! Racaille! I do not see your entry into the riders list - are you Welsh so short that you do not reach even the bottom of the list? Even an uncouth cave dweller such as yourself must appreciate that the author of such mischief would be working in the thrall of the mighty Ming, sowing the seeds of dissent amongst those of finer European heritage - which I suppose explains why you are the one who has been so easily misled by this subterfuge! Merde! Why must I share the planet with such cretins? Return to your tin mine!

Well well well , looks who's popped up in the mix.

Tex , Tex , Tex, you must understand , taking on the forlorn and Jap riders is a favourite pass time. If we can just convert one of the lost souls each year the Vinduro scene will be a better place. Just look a your Yamaha buddies , they are all sound lost and confused in their chatter on the net.

Don't be a hater Bro Bro , you gotta go Euro.

Do the French ( the real ones from Gay Pari ) actually consider the Canadian ones as there own??

Or is it like the Euro bike scene just a poor copy of the Motorcycles from the land of the rising sun!!!  :P

Talk it up Euro boys but "The Empire will strike back"   ;D

Well, well, well (Mk 2)...

It seems that we have another example of a Japanese bike skeptic discreetly hedging his bets with a Japanese bike hidden away within his team.

None other than Canam370, and his Also Rans team which includes vinduro luminary Wombat on an XT500.

Despite having a Yamaha in the ranks, Wombat was fairly circumspect about the chances of his team succeeding when I spoke to him yesterday. He noted that Canam370 was “the only bloke I’ve been riding with who has a translucent tank and still runs out of petrol”.

:)  It was dark! I wuz tired! I was too much in the zone riding my fine Eurank steed to notice the time passing! Dodging around Japs stuck on the sides of hills distracted me! The sweep was looking bored so I decided to sacrifice my day to make him feel needed! I've been framed!

And Tex, the frame construction of The Contraption is more akin to the YankeeZ than a flimsy Toadaka.

Wombat, I know where you live - be afwaid!

And I wasn't aware I was in a team - the 'Bat and I were placed to fill the gaps between teams AFAIK. Still, I'm not surprised that others want to accompany me while I gracefully traverse the terrain on fine Euro machinery. This way my sycophant minions........... ::)

Suzuki made them the colour of a lemon for a reason.
Kawasakis are green because they're not ripe (ready)
Honda's are red - it's the universal colour for danger
Yamaha's are blue....who actually likes blue lollies? Blue is also aussie slang for a MISTAKE!

I think the  IT 425 was available in white , my Dad had one but I'm not sure wether he brought it home from the USA or purchased it here in Aus.

My understanding is that UVP's are event specific.

I will check today to confirm 110 % .

good question

I will get back to you
Title: Re: The 2014 Harrow Vinduro thread!
Post by: 80-85 husky on July 16, 2014, 09:06:50 am
I suspect you can but you would need to be "tricky" as they require a start and a destination or reason for the uvp

you could easily say you are selling the bike at harrow and the potential buyer wants to ride it...

its a grey area and best done thru the club I rekon but if you've missed the boat and want to go... worth trying I guess, only 50 bucks for 2 days

also we don't want to cause any issues for VERI by bypassing the system so I would check direct with them before winding vicroads up into a lather ;)

Title: Re: The 2014 Harrow Vinduro thread!
Post by: HVA61 on July 16, 2014, 09:31:15 am
I have checked with Vic Roads

Technically , It is possible but not desirable by Vic. Roads.

The preferred method for events like the VERi events is for the club to make the group UVP applications for the event.

So given that , UVP's shall be applied for by the VERi Club for VERi events and the UVP should be applied for by the closing date stipulated by the club on the entry preamble or entry form.

I hope this clarifies the requirement for UVP.

Far be it from me to cause dissent and rancor within your team Canam370, but during my convesation with Wombat, the discussion inevitably turned to the possibility of your mount bursting into flame beneath you.

We agreed that in this eventuality it would be kindest to immediately throw you into the Glenelg River.

I suggested that perhaps some drill training to ensure that we have this procedure mastered would be a good idea. It would be terrible to be caught unprepared in an emergency after all.

Wombat was most enthusiastic about this, and thought we should repeat this procedure over and over again.

So, don’t be too harsh on Wombat, as he evidently does have your best interests at heart.

From the Breaking News section of the VERi website:

Historical precedents cast shadow over non Japanese bikes at 2014 Harrow 100

(http://www.freesites.com.au/login/members/imagemanager/images/ca0daec69b5adc880fb464895726dbdf/breaking%20news/Luckless-Gerhard-Haatz-pushing-Rolf-Uhlig-75-Simson-and-Belg-Jacky-Lamois-125-Hercules.jpg)

At the West German ISDT in 1969, no-one was surprised to see this hapless fellow pushing his Euro bike (Simson) across the fields. The two riders behind, are coasting to a stop as their own bikes (Hercules) fail.

Indeed it is said that during the history of the ISDT more boots have been worn out than tyres by riders who selected European bikes over Japanese reliability.

In 1979, the ISDT was held in West Germany again, and a few eyebrows were raised when these fellows were discovered still pushing their bikes around the same area.

When asked what they had been doing for the last decade, the leader responded, "Ve are looken vor und sparken.”

Now thats planning

Now lets discuss the bridges over things , this may end up an electric topic if you are not careful , you really will need to wait and see what our mighty president has installed for you in the bridge department.

Ended.

No bids, looks like 3 laps for everyone  ;D

BREAKING NEWS. A permit has been obtained by VERi allowing motorcycles registered under the Victorian Recreational Registration scheme to be used at the Harrow 100 this year. Any event eligible rec-reg bikes planning to attend will have to be in compliance of the Vicroads registration requirements and compliance will be checked at scrutineering.

So there you go! VERi has provided for all manner of users for this event. However, this special exemption will NOT be offered at all VERi events, so keep in mind the advantages of Club Permit registration. Get yourselves into gear and come on down to Harrow this weekend to participate in what is a premier event.

Excellent work from the President of Vice.

Due to the lateness of the announcement we will waive the late entry fee for anyone who wants to enter with a rec reg bike.

this was posted up earlier in the year regarding the new course

"VERi President Steve Baker, and Rob Shoemark (Media & Promotion) have just completed the final course set out for the upcoming Harrow Vinduro on the last weekend of July.

The course will run through seven properties and will be approximately 90 kms long, with a fuel dump at the half way mark for a splash and dash back to the finish.

Rob noted that, "The course is running through some of the most spectacular farmland you will ever encounter."

"For those of you sitting on the fence about getting your bike registered in some form - don't! You will be kicking yourself if you miss this one," said Steve.

The course is suitable for beginners as well as experts. With the change of format this year the problem of the Glenelg River in bad weather has also been addressed." from Tex.

who knows what that means......

Much work has gone into the solution to the problem of the Glenelg river crossing this year.
These efforts are now being transported to Harrow and will be known as the "Glenelg leap of faith" and should see competitors reach the other side with out getting their boots wet.

Half a dozen pale ales, payable to me. No other penalty as far as VERi is concerned, but bear in mind that you are using public roads and bikes are expected to comply with rego/permit conditions. You can negotiate any exceptions with the local constabulary should the need arise.

What part? If you're talking about river crossings, then there is only one that I know of. It's the one near the parc ferme that attendees from last year would recall. As everyone will be on registered bikes, you can easily go around this obstacle. If you're on a Husky, that's probably a good idea anyway.

Breaking news

I've just been advised that the local pub has had an accommodation cancellation, so there might be a spot available if you're not keen on camping and have previously been advised that the pub is full. Hurry, as this won't last!

Looking good on the number of entries too - looks like the rego 'hassle' hasn't been such a hassle after all! :)

So, I wonder who's gonna win the KDX? Should be a spirited dinner Saturday. :D

A note about recreational registration and the 2014 Harrow 100...

As was recently announced, bikes with Victorian recreational registration will be allowed to take part in the 2014 Harrow 100.

Some have questioned, or commented upon, the late timing of this announcement.

The fact is that VERi have been negotiating with VicRoads to achieve this outcome for some time, with no guaranteed result at the end. One committee member in particular has give up a significant amount of his own time to pursue this. As most could imagine, negotiating with governmental bureaucracies can take time, and we did not want to make an announcement until we were sure we could proceed.

If we could’ve announced this a month ago we would have.

Yes, this development has probably come too late for most, but we figured if we could assist just one person then it was worth it.

If we’re able to offer this option at future events, hopefully we’ll be able to do so well before the event.

This was my first Harrow and l must say it was an amazing weekend.

l arrived Friday afternoon to a cool wet camp ground and got set up. It rained on and off but the weather forecast for Saturday was for a fine sunny day. It was fairly quiet until later in the night when a lot of riders arrived to set up camp.

Saturday and the sun shone through. The course opened at midday so the morning was a easy one. There was a fuel truck going out on the course and setting up at the 35 km mark. l was thinking the course was around 90 km long at this point so sent fuel out.

There was a real mix of land that we rode over from tight slippery boggy sections, sandy treed sections, open paddocks with outstanding views of the surrounding farmland, plenty of creek crossings and a swampy area finishing off with a crossing of the Glenelg river. The course ended up being about 50 km so l didn't need to send fuel out Sunday as l could easily do it on less than a tank. Sunday was more of the same with some sections better for the traffic and others....not   ::) There was also some road riding between sections.

Many thanks to the Harrow community. We had dinner in the hall on Saturday night after the VERi meeting and it was a great feed ! The local police were in attendance both mornings spectating at the start and there was a Troopy ambulance there also. To the locals that opened their land to me for the ride l thank you sincerely for the opportunity, its really beautiful country you have there. l had a great weekend and was worn out  ;D

Great job to the blokes who set the course and did all the work there too. It was well signed but l did find myself off course a couple of times in the paddocks admiring the views, just sort of riding along distracted until wondering 'where did everybody go ?'.

See you next year at Harrow  :)

Cheers

Geoff

Post by: 80-85 husky on July 28, 2014, 10:18:30 pm
well what a ride... stupid bike filled up with fuel and took 20 kicks on full wick to light up >:( got a bootfull of freezing cold water 50 metres from the start...grrrr then I catch up to ol mate on the klx 300 and go for the pass as we went into that first boghole... he caught a rut and went sideways... opened her up with the back wheel pointing at me and filled me in!!

rocket rod was a distant spec by this time and the faster I tried to catch him the slower I went.
got to the creek crossing and discovered the left hand side was deep! a bootfull again! got out on to the sandy track and settled down and hit the paddock! I could see the xr heading up to the gate so I had the 400 wound up and tried to haul him in.... (yeah right!)  by the time we hit the last gate I was sitting at a nice distance and hangin on for dear life..just had to watch the roost ( which was pretty constant) and if it stopped...hit the skids!!. once we hit the blackboy country... I lost him totally... came to the first creek crossing and a bloke had his kdx lying on the far bank while he tried to push it over!! so I pulledup and grabbed the front wheel and dragged him over the bank.

just as we did that a guy on a big xt yammie pulls up and plunges into the deepest part of the bog and dissapeared ::) the guy on the dx suggested I keep going while he started the salvage operation. Struggled through to the big down hill ski jump section where I spotted johny maclean powering up the thunderdog after the creek crossing. I passed him going down the hill and thought " I'll impress him with a big jump down the hill..." he was impressed allright... the 400 didn't take kindly to that at all and tried hard to get rid off me! last time that happened!!

I limped up toward the first closing gate and Rod appeared behind me... he had stopped to help Luffy who had turned the kato into a costa cordia impersonation in the creek and was behind me the whole time I was trying to catch him. We motored onto the fuel dump and sailed through to the creek section just after it. heading up the fenceline, I took the high line at the dam and was confronted with a canyon which I just bounced through straining every muscle in my body trying to avoid going over the bars. I took the low road after that exercise.
Rolling up the road and across the paddocks was a blast, just great fun.

Crossing the fence "bridge" to the start of section 5 was an exercise and rolling down the far side just sent the shocks to the bottom out position and fired another shot through my spine I didn't need. I stood up after that.

what about the swamp! such a blast getting through the sand then all that mud was great fun especially around the edges..speedway city! then finally the infamous river crossing... I took the bridge!

Did that a couple more times and I was ready for a nap!

on the last lap I lost Rod (he was jutting getting to his stride) and ended riding back with EL Presidente who had purloined shoeys auto... at a particularly nasty bog just after the fuel stop, I had a nice line using a stump just under the water to ensure good traction when I heard a loud noise next to me signalling the approach of the auto under hard throttle followed immediately by a sound similar to the Titanic. by the time I found a stick to put under the stand the auto was vertical and being manhandled in an effort to get it free (still running) eventually Steve popped it out the good and got moving again... when we got to the swamp, he took a hero line through a patch of water on the inside of the main line and found a long log which he spectacularly flicked out of the water about 4 ft in the air while he did an "oh sh*t" dance on the  bike which did the usual husky thing and self righted itself... after that great save he drowned it in the river crossing (while I went around the road again).

so a fab ride and a sensational weekend put together by the team and the harrow folk. 12 months of story's to follow.

My least favourite part was the tight stuff in the trees

That was my favourite bit! My least favourite was the first half of section 1, you know that slimy bit around the river and under the bridge.

this is where you're supposed to be telling us how BAD it was, and how those of us that didn't go, didn't really miss out...

Sorry mate, but it was the best one ever in my opinion. Maybe I'm just saying that because the weather was great, and I just happened to have a particularly awesome weekend. I didn't fall off once, but came bloody close when I strayed from the path, directly against Shoey's advice at the riders briefing, and struck a slippery log. My mate following behind yelled even louder than I did ("Oh shitttt!") as arms, legs and bike flailed madly in all directions. Somehow the little DT righted itself and I continued on my merry, albeit slow, way.

I didn't really get bogged either and I just magically seemed to be able to pick a good line through the worst of the crossings, whereas last year the exact opposite was true!

The weekend wasn't without mishap, as the slightest hint of water had the bike cutting out until I made up a shroud for the plug cap. Still caused me a few hassles after that. Having Canam370 parked beside me, tooting his horn every time I kicked the thing while Wombat laughed his head off was another, er, highlight. That's what I get for giving them the "salute" when I passed them earlier I suppose...  ::)

I bent the brake pedal on a rock, and lost a bolt from the clutch lever too. Thanks to Alex & Canam370 respectively for assisting me with fixing these little issues.

I had so much fun on the little DT on Saturday I took it out for the first lap on Sunday. When I came back to get the XT250 I discovered it had a flat tyre, so the DT was pressed into service again.

One lap on Saturday, and two on Sunday earned me a gold medal, all on a twin shock DT125, so I was stoked.

Everywhere you looked there were smiling faces. Campfire banter kept people in stitches all night. The VERi AGM was conducted and we got through all of the club business just in time for dinner to start. A certain team from the ACT decided to pour some extra money into Harrow via the pub, and so were too sick to mount their machines on Sunday morning! After some extra sleep they were able to hit the loop before lunchtime. Top effort guys.

Hats off to the Green & Gold team member who came across from WA to ride the event too.

The Barossa Photography team award went to the inimitable Tolmie Beards.

Jeez, I could go on all day about it, it really was that good!

Yes I think we were robbed too ( I will be sure about it when I work out which team I was actually on :o)

The result apparently relied on the mistaken belief that a Hodaka was a Euro bike when in fact it is part of the 'big 5' from Japan

Technically I would call it a draw.

Nathan u missed out big time!!!!!!!!!!

This was my return to Harrow since the 1st and it was awsome, Had it rained I may not be saying that, but for me rain is a no no at any event!

I am still recovering after finding a log behind a large tuft of grass at around 50kph ( Wombats tip stay on the track )

*******Special Thanx to my Sponsor Canam from Discount Motorcycle Wreckers for keeping me motivated and getting my entry in and all the shit I forgot.*******

Another Shout out to the friend of Peter Dunlop from AMTRA who sorted me out with a clutch cable are after breaking it on sat.

The only down side was changing gears in wet boots & leaving a spot on the trailer & taking extra tie downs for when I won the raffle to get the KDX home. Then actually using the tie downs & spot taking the KDX home for someone else  :o

The layout of the track was brilliant, the metal bridge freaked me out at 1st but was a gr8 touch.

More thanks to Tex & Canam for dragging me up a crossing  ;D

Yes Tex when u came hooking past us on the DT I thought Bloody hell!!! then to find u in the marsh stopped dead hard not to laugh, yr right tho Canams bloody horn obsession never helps  ;D

I was speaking with Lochie & the lady who owns the land at the fuel stop, she was so happy we were so happy. So thats a good sign for the future :D

Well done all.

Yep, 100% agree. Despite the kill switch wire shorting to the speedo mount and the jetting being way to lean for anything I could use the bike for, I had a blast once I dropped the circlip 2 slots to richen it up. It is still not right, but bugger me it was fun.

I was dreading the final river crossing, as I have seen many better riders come to grief there,  but the fourhunjie just motored through it and thankfully washed some of the crap off it as well.

Still had to stop at the car wash in Ararat though on the way home.

Thanks to Tex & co for the share of campfire on Saturday night, the organisers, the landowners and to everyone involved, be they participants, spectators, the local nurse who drive past when that fella binned it under the bridge, or the publican. It was a great weekend.

Well for my first Vinduro back since taking a break from it in 2013 I picked an awesome event. It could of been even better if i didn't listen to John and his- I run my Husky at 70:1 all day with no problems  : : ) : : ) : : ) : : ) : : ) 40:1 was to lean for my old air cooled girl  :'( :'( :'( But you can't keep a good Husky down  ;D

Well after not getting very much time to run the Husky in, I took Saturdays ride as a sighting lap and to enjoy a ride with my old man on his trusty DR400 and my mate Rob on his PE250T. I struggled to keep my eyes on the track, some of the scenery they had us riding through was just stunning. On the first long sandy up hill the Husky started to show signs it wasn't happy and by the time i reached the top she had stopped  :-\ After leaving her to cool down for 5 minutes she was happy to fire up and still sounded sweet. So we continued riding a long and enjoying the serenity and the awesome course.

Once back at camp it was time to check over everything and lube the chain and fuel up for the next day, the Husky was all good and so was the DR400.
Robs PE had stalled after going through the last creek crossing  ??? He eventually got it up and running, but once back at camp we found there was only one bolt holding the exhaust flange to the barrel  :o So we went about pulling the expansion chamber off and finding some bolts to screw here back together.
We got her into the parc ferme just in time.

Then it was time for a few beers before we headed off to the hall for dinner. The meals were great and again we had a few more beers but i was trying to take it a little easy as Rob and i had a pretty big night Friday night when we first arrived.
We wondered over to the pub after dinner and there were a few teams in full swing and really having a good time.
I think i called it a night around 10pm.

Sunday-
I was dreading the cold start and knowing the husky wasn't starting well since its rebuild didn't help. We watched the first 10 or so teams head off on there way and we were starting on the 24th minute. Once again the Husky didn't want to start so i ended up roll starting it down the little hill near the start line  :) Might be easier to do that next year.

As i was part of the Occidentals team twice  ??? ??? Something funny going on there : : ) : : )  I thought I'd have a bit of a crack and left Dad and Rob to set there own pace. So the Husky and i were off at a reasonable pace and I got my first hit of reality going under the bridge with an injured rider that distracted me enough that i stalled the bike.
I hope he was ok??
The husky still didn't want to rev out and just seemed off. On the first open paddock section i opened her up and by the end of it the Husky had once again seized and this time wasn't keen on a re-start  :'( :'(

Another fellow husky rider pulled over and felt my pain and offered to send help. After about 20 minutes Dad and Rob caught up to me and we tried push starting the Husky, she fired up and sounded ok. So i continued on riding and she didn't seem to bad after her last seize.

I caught up with a few riders and rode with a guy on an Honda XR for a bit that was setting a good pass most of the time seems i wasn't game to open up the Husky again.
When i got to the pits i thought why not try putting her back to 25:1 and see if that will help her survive the rest of the day. Well as soon as I reached the other side of the first creek crossing it felt like a different bike. The old Husky was pulling like a train and really wanted to be opened up  ;D ;D

And all i could think was my old man saying your running it a bit lean aren't you... Oil;s cheap, engines aren't... So beware of running your old air cooled bike to lean, I guess a jump from 25:1 to 40:1 was pretty big.

I finished out the day having a ball and really wishing I had just put some more oil in the fuel from the beginning, as the husky was flying with some really fast transport sections and enjoying every minute out on this fantastic course.

I ended up doing 3 laps on Sunday and finished my third lap at 1:50pm and was told i couldn't go out again  :'( :'( Which now looking back was probably a good idea as I was stuffed.
A big thank you to all the sweep riders, the Harrow township, and the Veri committee for putting on the best Harrow yet. Bring on 2015.
I hope to have some GoPro footage by the end of the week too.
Cheers Dewy.

Dennis

The VERi club made a $2,000.00 donation to the Local Bush Nursing association

The town raised funds of approx. $2,000.00 on camping area fees

The town raised funds of approx. $2,000.00 from the Hall hire and meal on Saturday nite.

These funds are all put back into good community projects.

We had a great meeting on Sunday evening with the Land owners who were very happy with the week leading up to the event and the event.
So much so , we have been offered much more land for next years event.
So if you think it was good this year , wait until July next year its going to be awesome.

The Pub made a great profit all up and are thinking of issuing you and your crew personnel invitations for your large contribution you guys made to the bar sales.

As we were going around the course on Monday pulling out arrows etc, the course was in surprisingly good condition with minimal damage.

When we set the course it rained for the 3 days as we where doing it would have been a lot tougher if it had not stopped.

They tell Tall stories on how fast there bikes are ... :o  when they are
are only going  Half that pace..  90  =   45 works out about right...

As a committee member i think the course terrain and length was near on perfect…
As a sweep rider i saw that course was enjoyable and challenging
As a interested person talking to riders after the event i was pretty much told it was "FLUCKING FANTASTIC"  :)

I think we and especially those laying out the course did a pretty good job

TBH, the talk of a 90km loop sounded like a negative (although I admired the ambition).

Maybe I'm the only one?

It took a reasonable amount of riding time to cover the current loop so I am not for doubling it.

But I am sure the boyz will come up with something xlnt with the xtra properties depending on the terrain.

3x 90km laps probably close 2 impossible for most. especially me  ;D

As this event gets bigger its all about the enviromental impact that we cause longer distance less laps less damage the distance is irrelevant. We want to be invited back .

Fair point. 300 bikes making one pass will do less damage than 150 bikes making two passes, will do less damage than 100 bikes making three passes.

I guess the problem I see is that when you run multiple laps, riders get to choose how much riding they do. A typical vinduro loop of 10~15km gives riders a lot of flexibility to choose how much riding they do - one lap or twenty or anything in between. Obviously Harrow needs longer loops - the question is how much longer.

As the loop gets longer, that flexibility disappears. The casual riders are presented with a bigger challenger than they may be comfortable with (90km or nothing), while the more serious riders may also be limited (90km may not be enough, but 180km might be too much or impossible).

No idea if the new area lends itself to a cloverleaf pattern, but maybe that would a good solution? Maybe one leaf of the clover could be an optional "hard" loop, which would distract/slow down the more gung-ho riders?

If and when numbers start going south in the new format Harrow all these things must be considered, while things are this well received its hard to wanna change anything...

the format just enjoyed by all was pretty close to perfect with a high achievement feeling to complete a lap on a pre 78 style bike and the ability to rip a couple out on later model bikes.

while further land may be available, it will be difficult to alter that current course length too much without loosing the appeal of that just ridden.

But I have no doubt the VERI team will prevail and the next years loop will be just as enjoyable for all.

just need to start prep!

Crash? It was more of a Benny Hill moment!

Good footage of the thundering Tex on his DT125 - I can't decide if you were showing the 600 new racing lines or he was just apprehensive about trying to pass you! Just goes to show that there are plenty of bikes out there that you mightn't have thought about riding in these events but which are cheap to buy, fun to ride and will complete the vinduro courses (albeit without any class or dignity) :))

Well with a few steeds in the barn, I am grateful for the club permit scheme.

With Vic roads extorting 2x cars 3x road bikes at over $500 - $700 odd dollars each per year the permit scheme is a relief.

Same Coverage TAC wise for $60 bucks I'm lovin it  ;D

Luckily in NSW I can get a small bike fully registered and comprehensively insured for around $300. The rego will be taken off the DT and put on my PE175.

Looks like a great event that I definitely need to get to.. Whatever it takes to get there.

Well make sure u have Ambulance cover if what I am reading is correct about $5000 coverage on NSW reg.

A trip from Harrow to a decent hospital would empty that $5k str8 off the bat  ;D

Apart from that yr reg in Vic is good as gold  :D and u will luv the event, worth the drive  ;)

Actually Leslie, now u mention it why does a New South Welsh man have a Banner with Vic Club permit on it?? Kinda strange.

All this banter about Not needing Club permit to ride Cooka but at the same time needing a rec licence at $20 a pop 3 events and my Red plate is paid for and I still have 42 days of the year to ride basically anywhere I choose just like yr $300 nsw reg but it seems with even better cover.

When we run private property events down here its exactly the same as Cooka NO REG OR Licence req'd. So Cooka is not unique, it does sound like a great event for Holbrook Club but as JOck Yrself & Brooksie have made a circus out of it I have opted out.

The Goodnews is THE ClarkeField Viper Classic is on that same w/end and its gunna be huge. Look out for posts coming soon.

Wombat out!!

I was riding sweep on that section and went into the same bog at the end of the day (not sure how the front made it through) did the same as you dragging the  back and front into the next rut  but manage to slip and end up with my leg in the main rut up to the boys and still didn't touch the bottom with my foot and I'm 6ft2(the boys aint that high so im not bragging just a reference of measure).
