Well the reinvigoration of the Pre65 MX class in NSW is hopefully coming up on 20/21 July at Bulahdelah. This is semi-serious race series it is squarely aimed at getting these bikes out of garages and onto the track. Naturally the ‘red mist’ will descend to different degrees on each rider but personally I’m am really looking forward just the sight and sound of these bikes at Canowindra Showground in October.
Fee entry to the meeting for anyone riding a Pre65 bike 8) ;)
We have three solid entries to date Matchless Metisse, Triumph Metisse, and Husky 8). Klub Kevlar are keen and look like having several bikes on the start line hopefully a certain Heaven club member will uphold the German honours with a Maico ;)
Trying to come up with a series name. Have some suggestions but this is not really my fort aye but I have a few, please don’t take the piss just improve on my lame ideas ::).
- 2013 Memories of Roy East Series
- 2013 Roy East MX Series
- 2013 Roy East Pre65 MX Series
- 2013 Return to MX roots
- 2013 Rolling Thunder Series
- 2013 Rolling Pre65 Thunder
- 2013 NSW true Scrambles Series
Yep definitely not my fort-aye :P suggestions welcome
LASTLY. Kenneth Swan (KJ222) and I are providing a limited addition shirt (either polo or ‘T’) to each entrant and/or rider. Therefore I am looking for a great Pre65 photo that can be used on the shirt. I need an action shot or a detail shot of a Pre65 bike or bikes. High resolution photo required but if you can either send me or post low res samples here it would be great. I have a few but just not the right one yet.

Klub Kevlar are booked in to stay at castle Slakewell for this event so i'm looking forward to it. If the bloody doctors can fix me in time I will ride. If Klub Kevlar has a spare pre 65 I will be happy to help fill the grid.
I like this one 2013 Roy East Pre65 MX Series

I like to cover all, not single out one person achievements
Pre 65-True Era of Vintage Scrambling. Round 1
-
Dave the Roy East trophy is a Heaven thing from the first Crawford river Classic . Its a tribute to Roy and the pre 65 guys . I agree with Mark on this one let it be the 2013 Roy East MX Series

Always a favourite for pre-65. Probably get your hand smacked by the Mortons Archive if you whack it on a t-shirt though, darn ! Good luck with the project, hope all the ditherers and grumblers get off the couch and support this one !

But I agree. Roy would be stoked to know his name is being used to help keep pre 65 alive. This year if there's six or seven bikes it'll be a tribute to Montynut for having the courage to call for a series for the older bikes in a club that's dominated by post '78 bikes. With a number of bikes being built that won't be finished for this years series, it all should be even bigger next year. I've tried to round up as many pre 65's as I could but I know there's more out there. If you have a pre 65 bike or know of someone with one that's laying dormant, give 'em a shake up.

Great pic!

I agree that you can tribute a race to Roy East, make it a 10 lapper, like we do with the Norm McDonald memorial 10 lapper for all british bikes only, but to call the whole meeting Roy East series, I don't agree.
-
What about a heaven Pre 65 dirt track challenge!

Fair enough Dave thanks for the input I think we can all see your view pretty clearly now.
-
I love that shot of Derek and Don too. I reckon it's one of the best motocross photos ever.
but to call the whole meeting Roy East series, I don't agree
I can't stand the curiosity.....why Dave? Roy's arguably the greatest motocross racer we produced during the golden era and he was a strong advocate of VMX, to the point that he raced his Metisse while riddled with arthritis and Parkinsons disease purely because he loved racing. If anyone deserves to have a series named after him its Roy.

Totally agree on the photo above it would actually be perfect. I tried to find it on the Mortons Archive but couldn't. It appears you can apply to use the photo for both commercial and non profit uses. Would have no idea of the cost but if GD66 can provide a link that would be great.
A mate of mine did his Apprenticeship at Roy's shop in western Sydney and actually rode the Metisse quite often.
-
We also have tributes races for Lyall O'Brien Montesa Importer (RIP), and Lloyd Martin (RIP), both men ex- racers in their own right, did a lot for the sport in general for many years, If the heaven club or for that any club wish to run a series in the name of Roy East then do it, if thats what you want to do, I look at vmx and the era it supports as a whole, sure Roy East had the insight to travel to England to race bikes and did Australia Proud, and so did others archives results, Gary O`brien raced also in spain and won a scottish trials, Ray Fisher rode in England, don't lose sight of their efforts too and others.
You could call it the ( Roy East Grand National VMX Series) or ( Roy East Grand National State Series)and dedicate the races to others within the program.
-
What about the "The Roy East Classic Scrambles Championship".

Onto it, son. ;)

I like that one
Any others?

Dave this is actually a series of Pre65 races that runs at 3 meetings of the 7 round Heaven series this year. The meetings chosen to host the Pre65s are the most suitable circuits for the bikes.
The Pre65 do not have separate meetings as such. We are trying to rejuvenate Pre65 MX racing in NSW as the participation of these bikes has almost ceased in our club. We know the bikes are out there. We are trying to offer a limited number of meetings with a focus on suitable circuits to allow the owners and riders of these valuable machines to take part in a limited series which is more attractive we hope.
The attitude of Roy East to VMX sort of encapsulates what we are trying to do. He was super successful in his golden period but continued to ride his beloved Metisse into later life just for the sheer joy of it. I understand that Vic and other states have a stronger following of the Pre65 era and this series we hope will put life back into it in NSW.
We would really welcome riders from inter-state particularly at the CRC (August) or Canowindra Cup (October)
-
Can you give me dates and the closest events to me ( in Queensland).
I like the idea and would like to support it.

I see know what you are trying to do Montynut, Once the dates are set, I would also invite other clubs like the Classic scramble club, we have members with pre 65 bikes, and would be happy to support this series, I do hope that you keep it as a small series. This is an excellent idea and I wish you well, do it right and they will come. Plus it will give me a chance to come to nsw and catch up with my son.

For a pre-65 series, the Rickman pic would be ideal, but if it's a Roy East-titled series surely we could come up with as good a pic as possible of the great man himself.

It'd be lovely if we could get Roy's beloved Metisse along to the event. It's owned by Brian Clarkson who's not feeling too well himself these days. It'd be fantastic if he could bring it down from Port Macquarie, I'll have a chat with him but I won't get my hopes up too high. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Herbie (Can't think of last name) that used to work with Clarko at Penrith Wreckers and owns the fluro orange T100 Tribsa Mk2 Metisse? I'd love to see that bike out again.

It's also a good opportunity to bring the Adler up for a fang Dave. You do still have it don't you?
What about Bert Cavell and his lads on the family Beeza's, Mr Bamford and his Trumpy Metisse and my old mate Vern Grayson and his great little Cheney Triumph? I know the AJS is still in rebuild mode but has Dave T finished his Greeves yet?...........I'm just throwing 'em out there.

If you have a bike at home and cannot ride it, please bring it up. I am postive that we can find a rider for your bike. It would be great to see and hear a whole bunch of early 4 stroke machinery.
I am bring up 2 bikes,
Lets make it a big day.

I am looking for a hi res picture of Roy East preferably with one of his bikes. In riding gear would be ideal. I know it is a big ask but we want to make this series a successful as possible to build on in the future.
Does anyone have contact with Roy's family who could be a source of a photo if they are OK with it.
-
I know this isn't what you're looking for Greg but how cool is the photo from the 1957 ISDT? Easty looks 16 years old! Is it just me or does anyone else reckon Dr Zimmer, the Jawa guy looks like Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies ;D.

Firko do you have the second one in a reasonably high resolution as that is a cracker of a shot showing bike detail, period riding gear and it is easy to identify the rider 8). If you do can you pleae email it to me
-
Sorry Greg, that's all I've got....a lo-res found somewhere on the 'net years ago. I agree, it is a great shot taken at Hawkestone with fellow Aussie Ray Fisher, also Metisse mounted. I heard from Vern Grayson and he's indicated that he'll be trying to come down from Qld with his infamous Cheney Triumph.

get those entries in ;)

Well it sadens me to report the short story, my pre-65 mount wont be ready for the first round of the series ::)
Neither will Beggars Jawa endevours by the sound of it ::)
But, the silver lining is Beggar, Brownie and myself can make it to the Working-Bee on this comingSunday the 14 of July.
I have a German UNBREAKO brush cutter to chase the snakes out of the tyre walls thing.
Beggar is bringing an oxy-set with welding and braising rods and a cutting head!
Beggar is also bringing an inverter stick welder and electrodes for the Heaven Generator, just in-case.
He can also bring a paint spray pot with charged gas bottles to push it if needed? Let us/me know!
Should we stop at Macca's? for breakfast? or is that on too?
If so? what time should we all be there?
Remember, we have a few events coming up at this complex now, and the more of us that can make it to this Sunday's Working-Bee=the easier it will be and the sooner we can hit the frog and toad for a relaxed drive home.
A hell of a lot has already been done by the hard working Stalwarts of the club, we just have to tidy up, fine tune :) and have a BBQ to boot!
See you on Sunday if you can make it for a few hours :)
