mmmmm - very enticing.  Was thinking of a Vinduro mount - an IT200 or similar.  Thought maybe that would be a bit small for me now so might move up in size a little.....................to an IT490  ;D

Hoony, I think he is one of the landowners and was doing some sweep duties too. He is on the search now for an eligible enduro weapon.

No it was not Eligiable Hoony   i think he was told that as well

There needs to be a check on some bikes at Vinduro's to make
sure they are ( within the spirit of a pre 85 trail bike )

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but was it the fact it was an '86 model that was the main ineligability?  Or the lack of headlight?  Or because it was an MX'er?  (i.e. not a pre 85 trail bike?)

All of what you said plus Disq brakes Long travel Suspension and Water Cooling

The Idea is to keep Vinduro within the original definition of a trail bike or Enduro
bike some bikes made after 84 were the same as pre 84 or carry on models.
I dont think there is a problem with them .

In VMX you have different classes because of there handling and motor improve
       - ments .and rules to suit..differant year models.
Which is good.. but you will still get people try and bend the Rules to suit them..

MX is OK but at least with a headlight and tail light (and a bit of silencing) to look the part. 1986 is certainly outside the envelope.

So what about pre-85 MX bikes that were used as enduro mounts back in the day?

I know I rode YZ125's in Enduros in 82 and 83.  Lot of Husky riders rode the CR125 rather than the WR.  That sort of thing..

Hahaha - that answers my question!  I have IT400C's, an IT400D and a KDX400 (none of which had compliance plates back in the day) which I enjoy riding Vinduros on.

But....  I rode 125's in the 80's, and I'm getting a YZ125K back up to my 1983 enduro spec to place under my fat arse too....  To relive the feel of 1983, even if I can never lok like I did in 1983 again....    ;D       :'(

Looking through those photos I can see disc brakes on KTM,  XRs,  DR,  TS,   IT,  Rokon,   Maico  ???

Looks like a great event  :) we need you get off our arses over here in NZ and get Vinduros up and running. Enduros were huge here back in the day and I think it would bring a lot of new people into the VMX scene .

Upside down forks on that Maico aint pre 85 ;),the CR250 looks like a 85 RF model to me,still not pre 85 though I agree, looks like it was a good ride :)

I see the IT200S snuck in there to with the front disc,or is that a follow on model,or is it an 84 bike with an 86 front end :D :vinduro's were fun and simple once, anyway i need a cup of tea and a lie down.

cheers Dale.
P.S. i remember when these vinduro's were catching on,i wanted to play so i went out a bought an 83 model bike with all 83 model parts on it,f#*king simple really.

The main principle behind Vinduro is to have fun.. a few people still have these early 80's bikes which they have "improved " over time.

the reality is a latest model xr 200 is eligible as it has drum brakes and is no different to an 85 model.

if a CR 250 86 is the same as an 84-85 other than porting and suspension settings and there is a Parts Book run on so there is no real argument why they shouldnt have a ride. There is no prize money, points and no places...so who really cares.... putting a headlight and tailight on is a $100 buck exercise.

a lot of people have a bike of this age range and dont have the means to get "another old cr*ppy bike" as my wife says why should they be excluded if they want to pay up and have a ride. thats my thoughts, its a great day out and good value for money.

Ill bet the NZers still have their XR 200's......

This thread was started by someone who has gone to a lot of effort to provide a pictorial story of the event for those who couldn't get there or those who may be interested, anyone wishing to discuss vinduro eligibility should feel free to start there own thread and discuss away........I'm pretty sure I read that the Maico seen is actually the land owners own bike, I think we can let that slide for benifeit of the sports prosperity!  8)

Gawd you guys can carry on about your friggin rules.
Chris posted a heap of great photo’s to show what a great event it was and you lot just scrutinize the photo’s for proof of non regulation bikes

The 85 Maico with the modern forks belonged to the owner of the property.
He went to a lot of effort to set up the property for us all, he rode sweep on the red plate ride behind our group to make sure we got back okay and he will probably spend next weekend taking arrows back down.
This was also his first Vinduro.

I didn’t realize we were supposed to tell him to fork off because he might ruin some ones fun. >:(

Hoony, if you want to run your CR in a Vinduro you just have to let us all come down and ride in your back yard :D

Amen! Get a life!  ::)

Not that VERi owes anyone an explanation, especially those who didn't attend but... The '86 CR250 would not be eligible normally, but he was there at the request of the landowner, in a semi official capacity. There was also a couple of modern bikes there doing marshall duties, but only one of them had an 'M' label on his bike as far as I know. Ideally all of these guys would've been wearing fluoro vests but we were all too busy having a good time to worry about it.

Incidentally, the CR guy is now looking for a pre 85 bike so he can start riding vinduros.

Awesome photos Chris, thanks mate!

What's your take on Pre 85 MX bikes with a non working headlight and no tail light, In or Out

Absolutely fine and encouraged if ya wack on some type of little taillight too, most just use the old TY style Yamaha is its very easy to get a aftermarket one and only need 2 6mm holes to mount sturdy !! ;D Although its looked on as very polite to try and find some "period correct" style lighting as opposed to buying a modern style generic replacement, but you'll certainly not be sent home if thats all that can be found at the time. Lights need not work even on the enduro bikes, only need to be present so as to look "in the spirit" of the event.

Yep...it is often written in the sub-regs or on the flyer that headlight and taillight are to be fitted but NOT necessarily working.

I got sick of replacing (expensive) bulbs about a year ago and ride vinduro's without them now....but on social rides (ie: when everyone can go in any direction) I fit bulbs for safety sake.

Cheers,
Chris.

This is true of the private property events, they are all a bit casual.
The only serious rule at these events is that you have to be casual.

But the Red Plate Rego bikes need to have working lights to be able to obtain the rego and it would be wise to keep them working in case a ride day gets targeted for inspection.

Good vids too, young Sean Hamilton had his little Husky 125 on song as usual (green shirt)

The TS 250 came out in 84 and continued unchanged through its model life? So water cooling no problem, disck brakes on front, no problem. 84 XR's had disk brakes on the front as well? I used to have a YZ250k i rode in a Vinduro and as soon as pix were posted someone made mention of it in a negative way. My lights did work. Nicad battery in the airbox. Soz for hijack, but if you love rules go and ride VMX.

The water cooled TS250 ran from 84-89, The last shape of TS 185 came out in 82 and remain unchanged until it was discontinued around 2002 (i think) The 250 saw only 1 or 2 years of production in mirrored styling of the 185 that remained for all the years after. In fact just last year they went back into production!!! ;D Just proving that ya cant keep a good thing down.http://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-reviews/suzuki/2012-suzuki-ts185er-ar133373.html

There is plenty of room in vinduro for legitimate "flow on models" that were released prior to 1985 yet went unchanged in later production years, some prime examples of later model bikes you could ride at a vinduro with no problems would be: TS 185 of any year!! DT175 of any year with drum front brake. A 1992 XT250, XR200 of any year. Yep any of these bikes would be fine at a Vinduro, although the XR200 would be spotted out by many due the much different later model Honda red all the rest would go completely un noticed at all.

VMX has its rules and many of them are there to protect the classes and keep them representing the era they are supposed to, vinduro is a social, non competitive environment. Apples n Oranges. Whoever knocked your YZ-K being at a vinduro obviously needs a little model/year re education, i personally love seeing (period correct) enduro converted motocrossers!

Cheers, Brendan

......first off I'll apologise for perpetuating this hi-jack, but "back in the day",the mid to late '70s for me, we all raced converted MX'ers. Mine was a '77 CR250 husky with the last two gears from a WR, Preston Petty gear all 'round.....headlight, guards-front and rear,....Vesco skinny/fat tank, tiny mirror clamped to the bars, pushbike bulb horn, and heaps of chicken wire and pink batts shoved up the exhaust. ;)

Vinduro rule No. 1...........enjoy yourself........No.2.....TRY to be period correct.......No.3.......enjoy yourself   ;D ;D ;D

The casual attitude is what makes vinduro so good and that just puts some onus on the attendees to be close to the period. Face it.. turn up on a 90's bike and the level of Sh#t that you will cop will make it a not so pleasant day...Nothing to do with the rules or organisers...

While the "trash talk" btw brands is high, a common target for all involvedsuch asan out of period ride would be a serious amount of trashing im sure....
