OzVMX Forum

I have contacted a local website hosting company about migrating the OzVMX forum to their hosting package (cheaper and more storage space) and upgrading the software. I will also give the forum a facelift at the same time.
The end result? Hopefully a fresher look with improved performance and maybe even the ability to host photos directly in the forum.
The cost? $1500.
So, I will appeal to OzVMX members to donate to the cause to raise the necessary. Once we have $1500 in kitty I will proceed with the upgrade. Should I not reach the magic number, fear not that your donation will instead be used to fund my lavish lifestyle. Rather, I will put that money towards my future costs which include $600 annual fees for the Ning ausvmx site and $400 annual fees for the forum as it is.
Hopefully we will be able to raise the funds and we can upgrade our forum.

Thats only $30 from fifty people, considering the amount of people benefiting from this site in one way or another i think that shouldn't be too hard to achieve. Maybe even club secretaries could find a lil in their purse to make an extra donation on a clubs behalf?? Come on folks, its less than a slab of ya favourite piss and i bet we don't think twice before we buy the next one of them!!! Cant wait to see a fresh new look here and the possibility of direct image uploads is fantastic! Also Graeme i reckon providing a PayPal account email address may be a good idea too, people dont generally enjoy giving money away no matter how good the cause so the easier it can made for folks the better i reckon :) Just my 2c
Cheers, Brendan

Done deal.
I would probably make the nightly news if i couldn`t have a read of this site each day. Well worth the money. Peter.

I did offer that, it's
gmc99 at bigpond.com
I just type it like that to avoid auto scammer software picking up my emil address...
-
Posted my slab via paypal, thanks Graeme.
-
Happy to contribute towards the upgrade Graeme.
Maybe all the guy's that sell bikes, parts and gear through the forum should think about donating to the forum up keep as is done on "Marks Swapmeet". Just a thought.
Stan.

ANYONE USING PAYPAL MAKE SURE YOU SELECT "FRIENDS OR FAMILY" SO THE BASTARDS DONT SAP FEES FROM OUR KIND DONATIONS, BASTARDS!! :D
-
You know, I had a big battle with Paypal year ago over the Donate button I had on my site. They made me take it down cos I am not a business. I think that's bullshit, there's plenty of websites that aren't businesses using it.
-
Geeez I think that may have been me that linked that into a post?????? I thinks???, sorry for the prblems if it was ???//maybe I thinks too much, it would be a good name for an Indjian I reckon "Thinks too much", I was never really sure of my young name when growing up. But I think it may have been "Oi you", then again it may have been "Get Out of That,"

Bartardo s allright, you probably shouldn't get me started Rookie#1, They state in their little self praise amble, that they charge only 2.5% for exchanging my currency when shopping overseas, but in actual fact charge all but 4% over the last six months.
Then when I bought a bike at Xmas they intervened, blocked my Instant paymentpayment and would ONLY process it as an E-Cheque, Limbo-ing the payment for two weeks over the Xmas, new-year holiday break. Which gave the seller at the time, a case of what seemed like endless mistrust and irritation ::)
Whoops, where was I,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Oh yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Good one ;)
I will do something tonight Graeme, wont be much, but rivers are started with lots of little droplets, good luck.
-
Paypal contribution sent. Maybe some of the members can donate part of their Post Classic Nats entry refund to the cause. :-\
-
It would be interesting to know what response you get for the cause. I guess I don't expect to know 'who' or 'how much' but maybe how many do donate?
-
Graeme just a Cpl of $ hope it helps .
-
some from me as well ,hope it helps too
-
Same here, donation made through Paypal, took your advice Rookie and sent it as personal but the greedy bastards still charged a fee - 3%.
Might be a good opportunity for us to all oversubscribe here, so that Graeme has a few spare quid for the Future ;).
-
Yeah, good point. I forgot about that, they usually charge the receiver 2.9% for the privilege ::)
Thank you Graeme, Small bank donation done.
-
Graham will get on Pay Pal at weekend and send a donation. Thanks it really had got to the stage of needing a tune.Mike
-
Done.
-
Great site and all ready got my money worth, just by reading some posts.
-
Graeme why host local when the states are so cheap?
not a critique just a question?
-
Yeah, the States are VERY cheap. I do have a hosting package with LunarPages for the retro dirtbike site, which I must check into sometime as I don't know if those guys are still using it. But originally I set OzVMX up with a local place as they had the sort of things I needed. And yes they are now too expensive. But I've gone with a place here in Canberra, their hosting package seems reasonable enough for what I get. Still about twice the cost of the US options, but they are nearby if I need some hands on help, which I often do as I am no tech wiz. This $1500 gets me the migration to new host, software upgrade, database repair, facelift, and 5 years prepaid hosting. Seems passable for the money.
-
And thank you to all who have donated so far, we have about $600 in kitty at this stage which is fantastic.

Hi Graeme
Donation sent on behalf of our newsletter Scooter News. Always a great read on this forum and if we can upload photos easily we will be sure to put some on from the Viper Vintage MX, VMX, or vinduros we go to around Victoria. Maybe we could even attach a pdf of our newsletters???
Cheers

Donation made.
-
$900, getting closer! Thanks again to all. And especially you guys from Scooter News (!!??). Yes, if it goes to plan you should be able to upload images, PDFs and Word docs.
-
I don't have alot of input but collect some helpfully info from this forum. Happy to throw a few bucks in for it's upgrade. Regards Terry.
-
And once again, a huge thank you to all who have donated. We now have $1320, which is almost there. All we need is another $180 to reach target!!! I think we are close enough that I'll let the hosting team know I want to go ahead and start on the job.

Fantastic!! ;D
-
I've dealt with the 80 - now over to others for the final 100! Thanks heaps graeme
-
Well, that's it folks, we hit the target. I've emailed the web hosting company and hope to go see them next week to get the ball rolling. Can't do it right away as I am flying off to Qld on Friday AM, back next Wednesday... hope to get a few laps of Action Park dirt track at Maryborough while I am there too!
I will report back once I know what the plan is for the migration/upgrade.
Thanks again!!
-
great news Graham
-
Quick update. Just gotta find the time to drop by the palatial offices of my new web host and settle the details. Hopefully within the next week.
-
Graeme - I tried to donate but paypal came back with your account suspended or soemthing similar????
-
Hi Grahame
I'll donate, i'll deposit it directly into your account on Monday.
Thanks
-
A quick update. I am having trouble getting the company concerned to get back to me - at this stage I am not sure they actually want the job. Hopefully it's just a question of priority as this job is probably not a big money maker for them. Anyways, I haven't dropped the ball, just gotta get some action out of them! :)

the squeaky wheel gets the most oil Webmeister. don't give up.
-
Got the quote today and looks OK, so will get it underway next week. The idea is to get a lot more disk space, upgrade the software, change the look so it looks more like part of the ausvmx.ning.com site and have local support. And get the glitches fixed...
-
I hope you make it easy for us 'Super Seniors' to keep going! Pretty Please. :-[
cheers pancho
-
OK, that didn't work. After weeks of trying to nail down the guys I wanted to go with I laid it on the line. They came clean and admitted they didn't really want the job. They could have told me that up front. Anyways, I have another outfit in mind so will contact them and see how it goes.
Watch this space...
-
What a bunch of fork arounds they are then. Do t you hate the waste of time.
-
I have arranged for another Canberra company to take on the hosting of OzVMX. If they are true to their word, we will get a more responsive forum with the latest software and no more glitches. I hope to begin migration to their arrangements within the next week.
The downside... the forum will need to be locked for a day, possibly several, which will mean you cannot use it during that time.
Risks. Well, it might all go pear shaped, but these guys seem pretty good and should be able to fix any problems. But you never know what they may run into. We also run the risk of losing all member accounts and all posts. This is a remote risk though and is pretty unlikely.
One change will be the URL to the forum will change, so if you have any bookmarks you will need to recreate them.
Hopefully, it will all go smoothly and you'll hardly notice it all, but if there's one thing I've learned about computers, it is that they NEVER go smoothly. So, we shall see. Further updates as they come to hand.
-
The forum upgrade should be happening this weekend. The forum will be closed while this is done. I expect to close it Saturday morning, most likely around 9 am. If all goes to plan it will be open again sometime before 6 pm Sunday. My apologies for the interruption but we should have an improved forum after this.
-
Graeme I don't know how I'm going to make it thru the weekend, sigh .... if I have to? ;-)
-
Thanks for the advance warning Graeme. Appreciate all the effort and work you put into this site.. cheers.
-
Graeme - I agree with John and Simo - thanks for the upgrade but will be sending you my cost for withdrawal replacement for this weekend ;D
-
Thanks Graeme, will the current contents still be accessible with the new setup?
-
Good thing we have real races on this weekend , hope the upgrade goes smoothly , are you swapping servers?
-
If it will be advancing to a much newer version of SMF it possible the forum will end up looking extremely different to what folks are used to and may take some time re learning your way around.....but it'll be much much better.
-
Good luck. Don't forget to do a "Ghost" of the current hard drive first.
-
Yes this is a change of host so going to new servers etc. We will back up current forum and hope to restore the whole thing in the new setup. Hope to go the current version of SMF too. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan...
-
Good luck....I'm going to Buladelah HEAVEN motocross for the weekend so I'll see everyone at the new home on the other side. ;D
-
Really appreciate all you do Graeme to keep our favorite forum happening. Fingers crossed that you don't need to go to Plan B...whatever that may be ;D ;D Looking forward to the new hangout.

Top Job Graeme.

The new look forum is great, does it have sell check.
-
The new look forum is great, does it have sell check.
whats a sell check?
also when you use to click on the ozvmx forum top left off the screen it use to go to the ning site /now it doesnt

Sell check = decide against selling = keeper.

few more tweeks to go :)
-
Hello y'all. Well the upgrade has happened but there were a couple of small glitches. It also surprisingly took until today for me to be able to log in!
Anyway, there are still some things to be done. Obviously enough some of the links don t work as they used to, I'll try to get to that tonight. There may also be a few other tweaks needed once I can get to check everything out tonight.
But yes, all looks good so far!
-
It also surprisingly took until today for me to be able to log in!
Ditto Graeme .. triwed over the weekend a few times but could not log in even if I just googled ozvmx. All good today though ;D
Looks great too so well done, and thanks again 8)
Cheers

-
well done graeme, thank you.
-
I didn't have to log back in or anything :) just business as usual .
-
thanks guys, looks good
-
Thanks Graeme, looks all good! I was a bit worried this old dog would have to learn more new tricks, but looks like the coast is clear and I'm in!
Thanks again, pancho.
-
;) good work makes a great site even better
-
Good morning new forum......I've only just logged on so I'll go exploring and check it out.....first impressions are impressive though ;D.
-
New layout looks great Graeme. Thank you for the work you put into the forum for us all.
Only glitch I've encountered with the upgrade is that the "new" button image is not being displayed in Safari. All good in Firefox though.
Not a big deal but thought I'd let you know.
Cheers
Shaun

Thanks again, pancho.
And i thought i would be the only one that had to back to School Pancho.. Thanks Greame.

Weirdest thing - I couldn't get the fresh forum until this morning. Whenever I tried to crank it up all I got was the maintenance message. Thats annoying as I've been gyped out of one day of forum life! :'(
Looks good Graeme.
-
AAARRRRGGGGG!!!! CHANGE I can't handle it!!!!!!! Just Kidding ;)
-
Graeme - just a question, not a complaint. Did we lose our "time online" counter from the top?
cheers
-
Not necessarily, it'll just be a setting somewhere that I have to enable. I'll hopefully go through all of that over the next few days and try to get it all sorted, including some of the images and things showing up.
-
Great work Graeme, really appreciate the time you put into this VMX instituion.
-
thanks grum
-
Geezus, I was like Canned ham370.....couldn't get back in, then when I did, it locked me out after 1 post.....looks great Graeme, thanks for everything. As you know I splatted myself 2 months ago and I was lucky enough to get hold of a laptop in hospital so I could keep up to date (really to keep an eye on you buggers.....no shenanagan's)....it's been a lifesaver .....thanks again....I'll be sticking some dough-ray-me in for you. cheers.
-
JUST added my $ via paypal Pecker
-
As a technology Philistine I was a bit worried that we'd lose the forums great archive in the changeover but from my simple perspective there doesn't seem to be any changes other than a slightly different look. Graeme, can you tell give us a run through of any improvements or new features for idiots like me that don't understand such stuff. :-[ Thanks again for maintaining the best VMX oriented forum/chat room on the internet. I lurk on a lot of other VMX and classic dirt track forums and this one leaves the others for dead....both Australian and overseas. I'll pop a few bob in the cookie jar as well.
-
Thanks guys. As far as features go, I don't think there is anything substantially different. The main effect is that it should now be much more responsive and hopefully some of the errors people were getting will be a thing of the past. Also it should be easier for me to get support if needed.
You may discover some changes as you use it, if so just share them with the rest of us. If I get the time, I'll read up on this version of the forum and see if there is anything worth knowing.
One change that will happen this week is that the URL will change from ozvmx.com/community to forum.ozvmx.com. This is so I can integrate it better with the ning site which will go from ausvmx.ning.com to ozvmx.com. I will however add a redirect so ozvmx.com/community should still work...
-
Good work Graeme, I was battling on the weekend though whilst the site was in the work shop, noticed the KTM orange title blocks. Can we share the love and have Bully red next month.
Will pay my subscription also, money well spent.
MARTIN
-
Thanks everyone involved , just made a contribution and happy to do so , first year at VMX and loving it and the great people . New site looks great and a great source of info and entertainment , see ya at Conondale .
-
Hi all,
Or at least, those that have made it back here. I've changed the URL to the forum, it is now http://forum.ozvmx.com. http://www.ozvmx.com now takes you to the ausvmx.ning.com website, and the forum link at that site will take you to this forum at forum.ozvmx.com.
Unfortunately, my efforts to redirect the nold URL (http://www.ozvmx.com/community) have not worked yet, but I'll have another go tonight.
So for the moment, we may not have as many of the old regulars on board as their bookmarks won't work any longer. For those that ARE here, please make sure you update your bookmarks (or home page setting) to the new forum URL, http://forum.ozvmx.com
-
:-)
-
I think it's all sorted. So it's back to business as usual! :)
-
Updated my bookmark and straight in ;D Thanks Graeme for all the work you put in for us, the new site looks good.
Regards Stan.
-
Graeme - interesting my old link still brings me here?
-
Yeah it does now. We got the redirection thing working...
-
What have I done wrong? When there is a new post on a topic you usually get the "new" sign. I am getting one of the "cant show picture" things with the red X in a white square. Hope that made sense???
