Title: The art of being cool
Post by: firko on February 20, 2013, 10:51:45 am
What makes McQueen even cooler after seeing this photo is that he drank Lucky Lager, an extremely underrated budget supermarket beer when he could have been drinking Stella Artois.

I have seen the car chase in bullitt heaps of times never watched the movie all the way through, I worked for Ford PD at their proving ground for 19yrs and they used the car chase many times to motivate us at the monthly pep talk, all it did was make us go out and give the then current crop of cars a good thrashin who gets to do 260km/hr on a 5km oval track and get payed for it, I sometimes miss that place.

The best thing was they weren't mine, drove all sorts of cars from around the world aussie built ones were some of the best very under rated by us ozzies, people thought oversea's cars wrere better because they cost more, we did have some clangers but.

Tony I first heard that same question about another not so well known early seventies drag racer film titled "Two Lane Blacktop"  Worth a look if you come across it and the said car is a rough but yummy 55 Chevy in undercoat grey ;). It was different and yes you can see ideas, parts and scenes that were "pinched " and used in other films.

Yes there be! a hire car......My reasoning    They rev harder as your paying for it!  Someone else's car you have just bludged of em for free 8)...

the 55 Chevy used in Two Lane Blacktop was the same 55 Chevy used in American Graffiti, aparently...
i remember reading a story in an old Car Craft magazine where they tested the car.

I've been reprimanded elsewhere on here for for showing double standards by slagging Darcy Ward the troubled speedway rider yet ignoring Steve McQueens bad behaviour with sex and drugs and ex wives. C'est la Vie, I still think he's cool, something little Darcy will probably never be...........Anyway I've got a book called McQueens Cars and when I saw his XJSS Jaguar I started dribbling. He might have had some personal shortcomings but he had exquisite tastes in cars, bikes and women....both of his wives were hot.

Note the ever present gasper stuck to his lip. That unfortunately is what killed him in the end.

You could be right Tim, I've been in renta Holden Gemini, valve bouncing in reverse and keeping up with the traffic across the Story Bridge in Brisbane.
We were in Briz for the Aus qualfying final in 79 - 80? and the original meeting was rained off so MA had to put us all up in a Motel for a couple of nights and provide transport.
I'm here to tell you that all hell broke loose over those few days.
The car was being driven by Syd Speedway identity, Mick Lillis, anyone that knows Mick will not be at all surprised.
Back on topic, Steve the hell raiser.

Firko's thong......?

In the UK a thong is something a woman wears.  They resemble shoe laces ~ think of the girls on the beaches in Rio and are best suited to shapely young women!

I had to laugh out loud at the thought of Firko in a thong, starting the Triumph.  Still what ever floats your boat!

(OZ Thongs = UK flip-flops)

Trust me, the last thing you want to see is me in a thong Ben, however I think you've misread Slidey's post.......he's talking about Mr McQueen kicking over the Trumpy in thongs, not me. I've got a 3" radius semi circular scar and no feeling in my left instep obtained from kicking my 380 CZ over in flip flops when I was a younger and stupider man. For whatever it's worth, the Yanks call 'em flip flops too...I don't know how we got to call 'em thongs or why our ever amusing Kiwi friends call 'em Jandals. Note below shot of our handsome windblown hero wearing his thongs/flipflops/jandals while chilling out with his homies.

Some people will tell you that slow is good – but I’m here to tell you that fast is better.  I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me.  Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube.  That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba…

I think many see McQueen as cool because he was a movie star version of us...a regular bloke who rode dirt bikes, liked fast cars, drank beer and chased pussy. He may well have been an arsehole in the real world but it's the perception of cool that lives on. Our old mate Marsh Runyon who visited here from the USA to race at the 93 Ravenswood Nats on his Harley 900 motocrosser knew McQueen through Bud Ekins and the desert racing scene. He always maintained that McQueen was a regular guy who enjoyed being with his motorcycle mates much more than strutting the Hollywood scene.

And here I was thinking that the cool people only rode Hodakas, like John Wayne, Mike Connors and Peter Graves!

looks to me like some Hodaka dealer paid them to be photo'd sitting on the brand new bikes. the conversation went something like " no worry's guy's.. the engine's wont be running, just sit there and people will think you're hip dude's..."

Kelvin Franks use to tell me about the times Steve McQueen would ride at their MotoX meetings at Saddleback Pk. Kelvin knew Bud Ekins, and he would put entries in for McQueen under different names. most of the times he wouldn't make it to the meeting's, or he'd only be there for practice before some movie producer would send a helicopter in to fly McQueen away...

Yeah McQueen was cool. If the people around him didn't like his behavior they could have left.
They didn't,....... James Coburn was real cool.

As was Keenan Wynn, they all loved their bikes and in particular their desert racing, just imagine their stories from around the campfire. :o

Fair go Firko, I think I'm about your age and surely no one else would even remember Keenan Wynn.I used to rush home from school to watch The Troubleshooters, it was a show about the construction industry and he was the go to man when there was a problem.Bulldozers and tin hats, proper tv back in the day.maybe why I ended up in the industry.

Is Bullit the movie where the car makes 16 straight up-changes at the start?  :-\

That's a serious question btw
I read in a car mag that the Stang was dubbed over by the sound of a GT40 :-\

Bullitt the movie where the dodge loses a total of 6 hubcaps. The mustangs were 390's and had to be hotted up to stay with the Dodge. Originally the producers asked Ford for a couple of baddies cars as well, but they refused.
So McQueen and his mate Bud Ekins went down to the Dodge dealer and bought the cars personally.next time you see the movie nearly all the cars parked etc during the chase are Fords plus a VW from memory. Watched the DVD many times, section 14 the chase.

Three Mustangs were used, 1 was trashed, 1 was available for sale until the movie studio found out and because of "someone might get hurt" it was crushed. 1 remains, and the colour is highland green.

I'm off to the DVD machine crank up the sound and track 14, Woo hoo.!!

I don't reckon that's Keira Knightly on the Ducati Steve, she's too fat for a start 8).
I read somewhere that McQueen picked the 390 big block engine option over the small block because it 1: Had a deeper, more grunty note that sounded better on screen and 2: because of the extra low down torque it laid rubber much easier and more 'violently' than the 289/302.

Speaking of babes, tonight I watched Prizzi's Honor starring Jack Nickolson and Kathleen Turner......how hot was Kathleen Turner back in the 80's? I'd forgotten how beautiful she was. She went off pretty quickly but in her day she was so flucking gorgeous.

Note the ever present gasper stuck to his lip. That unfortunately is what killed him in the end.

I don't think that the smokes were to blame for McQueen's death at the age of 50. He died from a mesothelioma related illness, which he suspected was caused by his exposure to asbestos in pipe lagging on troopships that he worked on when he was in the marines.

"Johnny" was very cool to all of us post pubescent, rebellious, wannabe Milk Bar Cowboys who hung around the Ponderosa in Caringbah, particularly to this one, in his 1962 working clobber,

The Ponderosa put a television in especially for us to watch a screening of The Wild One, not every home had a TV in the '60s, I still reckon Lee Marvin was an ultra cool dude, on screen and off.

I'm talking 1976 and Tony turned up in a huge Yank Tank to take a few of us to our Rugby League grand final at Erskinville oval, Kingsgrove Nth V's Dulwich Hill High, the same grand final match up for the previous 3 years, former 1st grade Ref, Jack Danzey was DHH Sports Master and reff'd all our GF's and we still won em all.
I sat in the back seat right behind Tony, from Kingsgrove to Erko and my biggest memorry is, the size of Tony's head.

Don't think Charley is some poor working class pleb who made good, he's probably richer that Ewan thanks to his Hollywood director/producer dad. It's doubtful he's ever had to work in Macca's. I give 'em both brownie points for just doing what they do. Ewan might not prefer the dirt but he's still a motorcyclist and not a sometime rider like Brad Pitt.

Just been sitting back with a couple of beers & enjoying these pages, great pics & comments all of them, keep them coming!!, love it. Thought i was 'cool' a while back when someone left a 'free' "60 rear projection tv at the end of our road, [stampede, but i won--first mistake] bought it home & cleaned the "algie" build up out of the [whata ya callits]3 color pods, plus changed [strained] the anti freeze--long story actually & involved a 'turkey baster' [true], then sat back in the car halfway out the driveway & watched 'Steve McQueen' in 'Bullitt' with said tv playing back in the car shed. Never got to see the end as tv blew up. Found the fuse but blew replacement so bridge it with a 5mm bolt, that Fkd it totally. I'll swear it lifted off the floor with th explosion. Anyway, i was cool parked in the driveway while it went [or not]. The Bullitt dvd i have is a two disc one & shows the making of the film to some extent, can't remember it all so must [play it again 'sam']--all good stuff. Cheers.

My cool 'clock', [i said clock] came with our yz80g by memory. [kids 43 now] Importer had some to give away with the first [so many] sold. Still hold good time but pretty sure i gave it some crc once [bit of a service & oil change]Looks like it went so fast after that--that one of the number bars has dropped off.

story didn't come up but was just that these pics relate to the [not cool] tv & turkey baster story somewhere above yesterday of mine. One more [watching "bullitt"] just to show it worked--before it blew up.

Cool pic representing 'back in the day', Stripped (almost) down Ajay, 'jet'  helmet instead of the common place Cromwell, road tyres, footy jersey, probably leather pants, the ones that used to get the crutch hooked on the back of the dual seat over the jumps!,
plus looks like army surplus 'Don R' boots (probably been re-soled and heeled to many times!).

 Brings back the real feel!

 Top Shot!

just had a closer look & i have the 'gauntlet gloves' that come half way up the arm & i used too use pushbike handle grips which were a stretch to get over the throttle side [can just make them out in pic]. Reminds me of when my mates dad went to an auction of local 'ministry of works' vehicles & came home with a totally original "49 Matchy 500 for him, had candle sticks on the back that still damped & had a single seat plus pillion seat. Damn it i was jealous--just ran perfect & had been used by a meter reader guy or something. [still sulking].

Sorry Brett for the late reply..........I was sponsored on a Yamaha 465 by Betric Racing and we represented our club Central MCC.....We were running a safe 2nd most of the race, before a rear puncture, but still managed 4th.......other team members were Kevin Flood and Scott Dolan.
Here's a shot of my 350 AJS at our practice track at Belfield in 1968........a '46 motor in a '59 frame.......complete with Stadium helmet, Omedies leather pants.....and of course........ex fireman's boots from Fairfield army disposals store !! Goodyear Grasshopper on the rear... 8)

Hey Purple, what bike were you riding at the 6hr?
Brett

Brett, I was looking through my late Dad's stuff and he had a progam from the 1978 Nepean 6hr. However, it says we rode a 400 Yamaha, but I'm pretty sure Gally and us were riding 465's. I know we were running in a SAFE 2nd, before our puncture, and we finished 4th, but I'm buggered if I can remember who won that year.

Hey Alvin,
Pretty sure Gary O'Brian, Tony Lacey and Kevin Fraser won it. I was riding with team 36 and was right behind Lacey with 15 minutes to go and the bike nipped on one lap and then seized on the next lap (suspect no oil in the last fuel mix). Won it the next year though ;D
Pete.

I think it might have been a 400 in 1978 Dave, the 465 wasn't released until 1981.

Hi Pete......I'm still kicking myself.....it was my fault we had a puncture.......When we changed our practice tyres on Saturday night for new race tyres, I pinched the tube on the rear and PATCHED IT......WRONG !!...I never rode in the race again......at least you put your DEMONS to rest......As well as having badly blistered hands, I should have worn my nylon inner suit....I wore the skin off my tailbone from the rubbing of my leathers...I was off work for a week..........totally UNCOOL !!! :P
