Why do 76-81 YZ's sell so much cheaper than the others?
Without the obvious "because they're sh*t" I have noticed that lets say a race ready 79 YZ 250F in good cosmetic condition will sell for far less than a similar bike of the other 3 brands?
(Yes I know there are lots of other brands but I am comparing the 4 Japs) (Is that racists to say Jap when it's not a slider?)
I have seen the above bike struggle to make $2500 but the others, especially the Hondas, (Not Mugen) go for $4000+. The only one that seems to hold its own is the 250G & there's another puzzle. I would have thought the H with 43mm forks in lieu of 38mm & a 5 speed in lieu of a 6 would be a better choice (2nd, 3rd & sometimes 4th is all I use on most tracks) but I hear most reguard the G as one of the best Evos ever. (Others words not mine, you know the whole messenger thing)
Yes the YZ motors were a bit peaky (Not that bad), the 77-79 monoshock needed some work, (But only good riders could tell) but the rest of the bike was as good as any other!
My point is I honestly don't think my laptimes be any better or worse on any of the 4 once used to the bike. My times are so spasmodic you would struggle to get an average (Timed with a sundial or calendar) So why are the Yammys so cheap compared to others? I know there are some sort after models but as a whole they do suffer.
Anyone looking to get into the sport should look for a Yammy. Cheap to buy, lots of NOS parts still available through local dealers & good resale value. (Can't go too much backwards)
Opinions please.

Maybe Yamaha owners/riders/lovers are tight fisted?
-
I was gunna say" because they are shit", but you already covered that, so......I don't know. Back to work, the boss is back from lunch ;)
-
Would it be a supply and demand issue ie there's a lot more Yamahas available compared to Hondas etc hence the lower prices ?
-
I think the value of all have come down
-
I think they sold boat loads of them at the time so there are just more of them the G/H models are great bikes and make perfect evo runner.
-

I think it's what people are "prepared to pay" that determines where the market is heading now, there is a glut of dreamers wanting 2008 prices for their bikes but there are buyers who have become more conservative with their valuations and no middle ground between the two.
-
i think they just sold more of them and that was probably because they advertised them better.
here in SA Yamaha Pitmans were advertising and selling YZ's and RDLC's big time, every magazine ran storys about Steve Gall and everybody knew Steve Gall was a Yamaha pilot, plus they had Leisk and Willoughby in all the magazines too.

Not a bargain and it would owe you 6k to do correctly.

And the rest

They're just so plain and all look the same from 77-81, the most boring bike on the track. Sure most are competitive but very un inspiring. A lot of people building vintage bikes want something that looks trick and Yamaha's just don't do it for me..
-
All good points , especially that there are a lot of them about and that they look plain.I think because you can't see the shock , one of the most interesting aspects of the era is the suspension , especially trick and aftermarket shocks and swingarms .The aftermarket arms for YZ dont look much different and the shock is hidden but I still like em :)

Exactly, i was going to mention that also ;)

Interested to see if he gets $3000 for the 465. I sold one in perfect working order, but in need of a tidy cosmetically, with spare cylinder head & transmission for $2850.

Maybe right there but in 81 I reckon yammy had the best looking open class bike. That 81 Honda is hideous.
But if you want real sexy check these out...( not vmx ) www.indianmotorcycles.com.au

I reckon Maico and Husky had the best looking 81's.

how do you explain rm's from '77 onwards? They were the bike to have, in abundance and command better prices than yz's. euro bikes are the better looking Evo bikes!

So do I but he was only talking jap bikes ;)

I reckon the 250H is so much better than the G as an Evo race bike. Hands down a far better bike.
The yammies are an acquired taste. They feel so different to ride courtesy of the top heavy mono.

Come on mainline.. :o Compared to the 79 KX and RM that thing's a dinosaur that still looks like a 125D with a shiny swingarm!

Nice stand

That's only because the monoshocks were ahead of their time. Don't get me wrong, I think they all have their place and i'd own any of them in a heartbeat.
I don't think any of us would look back on this era with such passion if all the bikes didn't have such different looks from one another.

mmm, very plain. aren't they ::)

I'm just having a dig at you :) I actually had a brand new 250E and 400F back in the day..

All cool, I know some have their faves. My problem is I want one of each ;D

I agree with mainline. Nicest bike of the era!

The second most popular thing to do to a YZ to make it interesting is to make it yellow (or white if you live in the USA)
The most popular thing to do to a YZ to make it interesting is to use the wheels and forks to build a HL
:D

Yes its nice to know that those wheels and forks, after years of handling bumps at high speed, finally get a chance to have a relax.
It's a bit like a retirement home for them.

Yeah but a bit of overkill for farm work though ;D

I dont know Mont, how would you like to go from a svette 100 odd kilo's to a "I'm gonna join Jenny Craig after this last box of donuts", 120 odd kilo's and then have a rider thats doubled in size over the last 20 years on your back?....and to make it worst, they have to stand on a re-inforced concrete block to slam down from some all mighty height to start you, bit like those belly-flop contests. (aswell as bastardising numorous other Yammaha's along the way).

Not the best pic but all I could find & it'll do for now.
My 250 & 125F (666) and my daughter Deneale's 125F (33)

Here's one of my original YZ125E not long after I bought it. (Still have it) Look at the hideious front number plate they made us use! (& bald back tyre)
Threw the new original in the bin. That cost me later didn't it?

We had a 1979 YZ 250 yamaha and 1979 CR 250 Husky at the same time.
The YZ was definetley faster but the husky was a better alround bike.
IMO the YZ is a nice looking bike not as nice as say the 79 husky or 79 Kawasaki .

I deliberately left the Euros out of it for various reasons.
The Japs were all around the same price and availability at the time of their making so makes for a good comparison now.
My favourite before actually getting into racing was the Ossa Phantom
