Typical of removing chain guide ..... chain rash to clutch actuator and broken rear mount.
-
that tank is so cool
-
That tank is the coolest mx tank I have ever seen,
And I have seen a few,
Post photos of the swinging arm too.
-
Tank and swingarm are the same as the ones on the '79 works bike Gunter rode at Amaroo..

Just need one of those front wheels now
-
Yeah huge brake, full reed valve engine too. :)
-
I've got a 400cc reed barrel packed away in the garage somewhere. When I restored my RM400 I was lucky enough to locate a NOS barrel and piston and put the engine back to standard and packed the reed barrel away. Before I found the NOS barrel I remember doing the sums on the capacity of this weird barell as I was considering using it again and it came out to 460 (ish) CC. Never found where it came from.
-
Bahnzy is it a full reed valve barrel you have and not the std case reed barrel? Is it maybe a RM465 barrel?
The 79/80 works twin shock Suzukis had an engine similar to a RM465.
-
Its appears to be a standard barrel that has a (unknown) full reed system with the standard Suzuki reed block removed. It certainly wasn't cast that way, it was modded (very professionally) to have the reed. To the untrained eye it would like a cast part till you look inside and see the machine work and the welding. I'll get a photo down and post it up.
-
Both of the above RMs are as exotic as all get out, cool things. Another trick RM is Dean Burts ride. Next time you're at the races give it a once over, it's mods are very subtle but extremely effective.

Yep, have to agree, VERY tidy bike and he's a well mannered young bloke too & he still rides the wheels off them, shit, i never thought i'd ever refer to someone Dean's age as a young bloke, bugger, i must be getting "old"!!!

He'd have to be happy getting $3750 for the T !
-
The pic i posted above is the '79 RN500 works bike that was in Australia late '79 for a few different riders at different races. It's worlds apart from a production RM400.
-

I couldn't agree more, Burty's a nice bloke and he seems to be getting faster the older he gets (not that he's that old ::)). I thought that motor looked a little lumpy in your photo Johnny O, it's indeed a very trick bit of kit. Would this be the last of the twinshock RN/RH works bikes?
-
Pretty much Firko, 1980 was the last, same bike as the above one.
Were you at Amaroo the day Grunt demolished the opposition on that bike?
-
No, I didn't get back home from the US until December 1980.

JohnnyO can you explain please where Goofs RM500 fits into these boxes of goodies or was Goofs bike just a good worked quality production RM500 for 83 ?
Thanks

In england, auctioned by Rick and Vintage Iron - a multi cultural 400
-
I beleive Deano had the head on the right cast , so Frank , as they say , had a blank canvas to work with.
Nothing better than a bit of Franks magic

Yes Alison Goof's bike was a heavily modified production RM500 single shock. A fairly different bike to the last of these twin shock bikes.

Why all the extra welding and machining on the surface area of the cyl head?
-
Why would you cast a new head to put a modern style combustion chamber in it.....we just re-machine it and shrink a solid alloy slug into it then CNC the new combustion chamber.....easy peasy and if you fark it you just remove the slug and put a new one in......also we put the spark plug in the middle.
-
This pre production RM250 had some interesting bits..swingarm, forks and large front brake

By mid evening I reckon some genius will come on here and announce what a shit design Deano's new Frank Head is. You watch ::)

Well not exactly, but is it a mod from the period????

And a mod I had done 6 yrs ago to one of my bikes ;)

I don't think that's a new casting, you can see where it's been welded up around the stud holes..
-
and I think I could safely say that isn't why he is winning - put him on a motorised coke can and he would still be in front I reckon!
-
I think you will find that the welds are where there were some minor deficencies in the castings. The deficencies were filled and machined for the obvious reasons
As for the reasons for casting new heads , you need to ask Deano.
Good effort all the same

Just got my head back for my 400 Maico from the U.S. via FlyingDG from the forum. This is the work RKTek does.

And now in Australia
-
The real horsepower on old bikes is in the head and ignition. Two stroke engine design has come along way since our old beaters were built so why not do what Deano and Brad have done and modernise the technology without porting the shit out of them.
As soon as I get my act together with the 360 oval pre 65 bike it's head will be on its way.
-
Rumour has it that you may see it in the flesh one day.
It is Indeed here in OZ
expect to see it at Classic Dirt
-
i cant wait to see it all together ,will be one of the best looking bikes in australia
-
The RM will be on display next week
-
Almost a shame to cut Oury grips from a bike
