Title: Harrow Vinduro July 27-28, 2013
Post by: Tex on November 19, 2012, 07:25:35 pm
In light of all the trash talking that's already begun ahead of next year's event (http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=24205.0), I thought I'd start a new thread with the correct date in it to avoid confusion. After all, the only confusion associated with Harrow should be confined to the actual directions and arrows on the loop itself!

But, is that thing crossing the river a relic from the cold war?

Gezz , thats a long time from now.

The Welsh  and the Czech  guys will have broken any machinery they have  , providing they managed to fix it after the last Harrow effort.

I have been advised that the Czech guys are using rebadged Huskys in a desperate bid to finish and regain some lost mojo.

The Welsh guy's never had any Mojo and are rumored to be flashing back with velour outfits .

Only 193 sleeps to go....
What to wear?
Mud tyres or Rock tyres?
Compass for navigation?
What bikes to take...?
How much beer?

Am I the only one feeling under pressure?

Will the International Teams turn up?
Will they be ready to ride or Latte?
Will their bikes.....?

Comrade Drakfallov caught on film riding a capitalist pigdog free market economy Ossa? It must be photo-shopped!

Reeksy dribbling over an SWM?

All in the zone....

Only 81 sleeps to go!

A reliable source tells me the Welsh captain is making the trip home soon to try and recruit Gerriant Jones the well known Honda/Maico rider to bolster their team's chances in the event. And, that he's been working on disguising a late model Husky to enter on himself - looking for reliability.

By now the Czech team are in training, fitness work, mechanical works - tweaking things, remounting their back to front kick starters and taking masking agents.

And the French? Their busy protesting the use of English language, sipping on Latte and preparing their French (Canadian) machines, perhaps trying to colour coordinate their machine colours with their flag.

Unfortunately there is no second source to confirm all of this, so it could be true!

The only thing the Czech team would be doing is figuring out how to out cheat the Italians!

ONLY 60 SLEEPS TO GO!!!!

So how are bike and body preps going :D, whos coming, who's not? Its gonna be a wild 4 days for me as i've been lucky enough to score a spot at the Shane Watts "DirtWise" school taking place at Devils Kitchen (near Ballarat) on the thurs/fri before hand. So i'll be leaving home at sparrows fart Thurs morning with the old and new machinery in tow, spend 2 days in a small group (20) getting the skills honed with Wattsy then head straight to Harrow when we're done there on Fri arvo. Very much looking forward to spending 4 consecutive days in the saddle!! ;D Two of those days i'll be lucky enough to be in the company of seasoned, highly skilled professionals that are a fantastic source of knowledge, the other two i'll be at Harrow! :D :D ;) See y'all there

Cheers, Brendan

Don't worry I did, I even offered bikes I dont own knowing others would happy loan an exotic steed for the sake of gettin him there!! :D He's gotta head to Adelaide at the end of the day on Friday to begin another two day course there over the weekend. Oh well, I tried  ;)

Why are you worried Jerry, did you lose your licence?
You don't need a licence for Harrow any more than you need a licence to own a Bultaco!!
I think you may need a licence to escape for the weekend though, best start buttering up the wife now
Title: Re: Harrow Vinduro July 27-28, 2013
Post by: jerry on May 30, 2013, 10:22:03 pm
Geoffrey I heard that maybe you did need a licence and I don't have one but obviously it's not a problem. However due to the rare and exotic nature of Bultacos indeed you should have a licence and that way some sort of ownership criteria could be established to prevent undesirables (such as Kawasaki riders!) from even thinking about owning one of these fine beasts. Now onto Harrow we have had some problems within the hallowed halls of Rusty Heap of Shit Racing. Firstly I have been advised that I have an arthritic hip that will need to be replaced soon and then founder of RHS Andrew Swann has just got out of hospital having had his heart re-bored. None the less we hope to be at Harrow come hell or high water. J

Not to worry about high water - even an esky could ford the crossing as evidenced last year. Still, the bouyancy of a KDX is yet to be established so I can understand your fear uh, trepidation.

As the bike prep and team banter are in full swing I was wondering who would like to be part of the Victorian Trophy Team ;D :o
Apparently it takes 6 members to make up a team?
Talking to Rookie I think after his 2 days with Shane Watts he should be fit to lead us  ::) ;D But he might have to borrow my PE175 again this year as the reliability of his IT200 still hasn't been proven :P

Honda Team ::) well good luck there John  :P
Apparently you can still be part of a 3 man team, and also your states Trophy team? Sounds a little complicated  ??? ::) All I want to do is hold wide open a freshly rebuilt WR430 Husky on the open paddock sections ;D :P

3 man teams can be entered as usual but you can also be a member of a "6 MAN STATE TROPHY TEAM" you cannot elect to be part of a trophy team, you will or will not be selected by that teams manager or captain. The 6 man teams must be made of 6 riders of mixed ability, bike capacities and brands, they will not be made of 6 pro's on Husky's or 6 duds on CT110's etc.....Team members elected must be dressed in appropriate "Team specific" attire at the Saturday night gala dinner and MUST become heavily involved in pre event banter and antics!!! This part is not negotiable!! :D Yes Ryan Dew you will be on the Vic state trophy team ;) DONT LET THE BIG V DOWN!!!  ;D

The highly anticipated entry forms should be out soon. The delay has been caused by the fact we've had to create a large print version for the South Australian state team.  ;)

(Please note: Preliminary list, may be subject to change)

Looking forward to seeing those state teams come together and begin sledging each other. I hear that the Vic team is close to being locked down, ditto the SA, ACT and NSW teams. An incorrect email address for the Qld team was sent out, so that might explain why things have been quiet on that front.

Is Veri accepting entries from the 'Principality of Capertee' as a state team?
I'd be checking their credentials, I dont think they've sucessfully seceded from NSW and therefore should be known as the NSW 'B' Team, that is if they have working bikes and bother to enter.

Is Veri accepting entries from the 'Principality of Capertee' as a state team? I'd be checking their credentials, I dont think they've sucessfully seceded from NSW and therefore should be known as the NSW 'B' Team, that is if they have working bikes and bother to enter.

We'll accept entries from pretty much anyone. However I think we'd draw the line at acknowledging state teams from entities that don't actually exist. These Capertee chaps are welcome to enter as a standard three man team, or even two teams of three if there's enough of them (i.e. Capertree 1 & Capertree 2).

I hear that the Qld team is struggling for numbers, so any Qld expats are encouraged to volunteer.

I would have to agree with The Concerned NSW Citizen. Members of the Principality would not be covered for MAV insurance. They would have to insure under the auspices of the FIM? Without the Principality being recognised by Australian roads authorities then I'd warrant that their vehicles have been registered illegally too. The titular head of this seccessionalist group has also made no claim to any peerage - a principality can only be headed by a title of less than a King, so as a group they are a pack of try hard wanna be's anyway.
Tex, I'd be very careful about accepting whatever currency is being offered by the Head Tit to pay for the entries........

The terms of my parole are currently subject to appeal, and my legal aid lawyer assures me that I'll be allowed to travel freely between states very soon.

My apologies if I have offended a head of state. Allow me to offer the services and support of my own team, the Glenelg River Ferry Service. My colleagues and I would be delighted to point out the safest and shallowest paths through the river crossings that your majesty might encounter. You can trust us.

And a Principality can't have a King! You are determined to usurp any rules! Typical of a classic Napolean Complex.

the following is the media release put out by team bessy

MEDIA RELEASE
Sunday, June 30, 2013

SUBJECT: TEAM BESSY RUNS A TEAM AT THE HARROW VINDURO

Team Bessy coordinator announced today that Team Bessy had entered a team in the Harrow vinduro.
Peter Ellard said “Team Bessy will be made of 2 riders with a mature age outlook and one younger rider which will give the team a good overall balance”
He said “Team Bessy will not be getting involved in to what appears to be a huge amount of bluster and hot air centered on a teams sartorial elegance and or suggested underhandedness by others.
Our aim is to put our efforts into the event and not be part of some circus side show outside of the event. After all I cannot remember an event ever being won by the best dressed team or the like    ah but those who resort to underhandedness is a different kettle of fish. The idea of this sledging as adding to the event is pure humbug and ignores the solemnity and political correctness of the event. It is a pity that our sport that was once nearly a religion is being denigrated in this way”.
“I have purposely not mentioned the other Team Bessy riders in this release so as to offer them some respite from being drawn into this mundane childish banter which as I have previously reiterated detracts from the solemnity of the event
In closing I would again say that Team Bessy has that blend of mature experience and youthful fervor  Go Team Bessy“ He said

No amount of pre-race underhandedness (if it's not a word it should be) can even come close to the dastardly deed of Harrow arrow placement.  That strategically placed arrow (implying there is only one) just out of instant view as you ford a stream or traverse a rock face or the non-arrow revealing hidden 'treasures' in the bush like fence wire or poly pipe, that leads to one questioning ones direction,  ability; that element of doubt and ultimately ones worth as a Vinduro rider, surely this is the most devious and unholy act of Harrow?

Mark Boddy, IT200.
Dennis Myers, KTM350.
Bill Campbell, KTM250.
Marty Wright, YZ250.
Mick Williams, DKW125 (assuming he enters)(and no, not that Mick Williams).
Don Thomas, DT2.

If Mick W doesn't enter, then Sarah Roberts (IT200) or Rory Pearsall on the PE175 is next in line.

Don’t stress John, you’ll get your ride.

Never could get my head around fashion, I work in jeans and T shirt and when I go out on the town I put on clean jeans and T shirt.

The only fashionable thing I could do was to turn up to parties late, then I found all the cute chicks had already been picked up.

Well, I wasn't going to say it, but.... :D

TBH, I'm still not 100% sure that I will make it - got a lot of stuff going on in real life, and sometimes real life gets in the way of dirt bikes (dammit!).

Dennis, if you can find a way to spend a can charge in Harrow, I'll gladly honour it!
I'll also shout you all the drinks you can hold in the second pub in Harrow. ;)

Geoff, if I am stupid enough to drown my bike 2kms from the start again, I'll be walking back to town, and will start hitting the cans. Heavily.

All bikes participating over the weekend should appear to be "in the spirit" of Vinduro, if you want the extra fun of riding a different bike on the Saturday sand track it wouldn't be that hard just to wack an old headlight and tail light on it. As its not imperative that they are operational any old headlight (even a headlight body is fine) and small rubber boot style (like Yamaha TY) will be a 5 min job to fit up. Cables ties may be used as plentiful as you wish!!  ;D

Cheers, Brendan

Reading these last 8 pages has made it all worthwhile.....jeezus you guys must be the best s---stirrers a guy could know!
It's gratifying that it'll all come together in a big rush:
-in the flooded Glenelg
-in the impenetrable gullies
-in the gloopy swamp
-in the sand stretch WFO get-off
-in the Interstate Trophy Teams sabotage
-in the never-never land of seldom seen arrows
-in the Harrow dungeon with the mummified cat
-in the hysteria of the 'Teams Dinner'
-(insert your own undoing here).
Well folks, we really are up and running: the Interstate Teams are largely finalised, the 3 man Club Teams are showing their inventive spin, entries are still coming (I'm up to Blackwood for the next 5 days, more paperwork and fine tuning that fine piece of Czech Iron) and we're up to #175, the medals are ordered, the Meritous Trophies are in, Barossa Trophies are coming, heaps of goodies from Wurth (god bless you Bruce C) and Goldacres have just donated a mega pressure washer as a prize. Thanks Bruce Mac. Shannons are setting up a stall, I've just doubled the order of arrows (...insert smart arse comment here...), heaps of bunting, the front # stickers are being printed (thanks Neil), Banners and VERi stickers done (thanks Shoey), time cards ordered, tags gotten, signs sourced, Sam of Crank Coffee is confirmed, the Dinner is sorted with drinks and food, the pub will be serving meals as well as your favourite poison, all permissions from landowners obtained, heaps have volunteered to help set up (...what! don't say it...), permits sorted, clickers bought, clocks have new batteries, staple guns checked, etc etc....
F--- I love doing this....IT'S GONNA BE A HOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

No Dennis i don't think the budget allows for 2 stickers for everyone!! But if you bring some metho and a rag, spray and clean vigorously where you're gonna place your sticker on the bike, if you you've cleaned and adhered the sticker well without any curling at the edges so no dust or mud can get in you should easily be able to peel it off when you get home and still have it in perfect order to transfer to whichever prime position in home or shed you'd like t display it!!  ;D

...ahlzimers is setting in...I meant Barry Collins of WURTH, thanks to Rookie and Serge for the 5th Aniv. Harrow Vinduro T's they're organising for sale, Monsieur Paul from DMCW for funds, CJJJ Medical, Clubby from TrailZone for the massive ads, locals Bruce and Paul for Route Check manning and recovery,  the Finkinator and Ian for sweeping, the god bless 'em Goddard clan for office help and deciphering my 'systems', the State Trophy Team Managers for dealing with their keen appointees and disappointed starters, Lauchie Turner for the impetus and property (he still has an idea to include another bit of land), the humour of GMC (who has never seen so much money pass before his eyes in his lifetime) and Le Frog Kalika,.....ah I could go on forever with the offers of help that flow in; love you all. Maybe everyone needs to stuff up their first event so you all can help 'put it right'?
Now, leave me alone, I must contemplate my navel in the BW hideaway....

Not many sleeps left...hoping the plan comes together - waiting on a new carbie for the 500, pick up the recovered seat on Friday, fit new chain tensioner, tighten bolts, change g/box oil, clean and groove brakes, new stickers.....the list goes on. The back up 250's ready to go!

Need to download some new music for the 12-14 hour trip!

Harrow Vinduro,
My son and I had a great  time, the course was amazing, credit to you drakey and too the others that helped  put it all together, it was wet, wet, very wet, and muddy , but motorcycling is a winter sport, the harrow community did well with the meals on Saturday Night excellent, great little pub too, hospitality is wonderful. Thank you,  see you next year with a new bike. cheers Dave.

What a top event. I'm shattered after a huge weekend (and a big fortnight leading up to it...), but well worth the effort.

Huge, massive thanks to Facthunt for the loan of the mighty IT after my CR and my KTM decided that they hate me... (CR gearbox and head gasket, KTM head gasket and something worse).
Extra thanks to him for not cracking the sheets when I broke it....  :-[

The Wright Motorcycles Team got three Gold medals, and the ACT Trophy Team won the Outright, so that eases the pain.

The rain made it tough - I've ridden events for modern enduro bikes that have been easier... But that just increases the satisfaction level, I reckon - there were plenty of people wearing Bronze Medals and big smiles yesterday afternoon.

Between 3858 and myself, we sponsored three riders in their first ever Vinduros - they've all said "we will be back next year!". This must surely rate as the biggest Vinduro in the country - I'd have to guess that it is the largest in the southern hemisphere?

Oh, and among many highs of the event, the absolute high point for me was catching out a certain Mr Drakeford when he was lost!
There were less reported cases of Harrow Arrow this year, but clearly nobody is immune. :D
And epidemic rather than a pandemic, maybe?

There was a ktm 500 that went into the creek, completely submerged and when it was finely pulled out, first kick it fire up. now that needs a trophy, and many thanks to the sweeper that helped to pull that rider out. a great effort. :D

That guy was freezing before he went in :o I found the water warmer than the completely soaked, wind chilled state i was in after blasting across the paddocks....

it made no difference in or out of the river... ;D :D.

The greasy logs on the first lap became good traction on the second lap the track was so slippery!!

shades of Foster (Devils Pinch) Enduro in the 80's :D ;)

what a bun fight, how good was it to get up that first hill!

i stalled on lap 2 and every time i kicked the bike it slid further down the hill!

what a great day!

A great big thank you to all the people who gave so generously of their time to organise the event and proceedings, lay out the course and also to deal with the big clean up. It is easy to forget that a 2 day meeting takes the better part of a week physically onsite to make it happen, and thats apart from the administrative work leading up to the event. Its remarkable that things go as well as they do, but that it does speaks volumes about the doers! Cheers!

The 2 riders were my Glenelg River Ferry Service team mates! They were quite impressed with Dennis' ability to swim underwater in full dirtbike outfit including helmet.

I must say a personal thanks to Lauchie who was on hand with some fencing wire to secure my clutch lever when the pivot bolt disappeared. The fix worked a treat and I left it like that for the rest of the day!

And another thanks to the sweep rider (Mick P?) who found my bum bag and brought it back to the parc ferme.

I had an intersting ride ;D some fencing (thanks to the sweep with side cutters), some rock gardening (thanks to the KDX rider for helping me and the bike recover) and a few other steps offs along the way.

Many thanks to my team mates nearly all of which have their own tales of woe to tell. Congratulations to the ACT Team; it's comforting to know that your surrounded by NSW and condolences to the Capertee (Welsh) team which once again lived up to everyones expectations.

Well Harrow was my first vinduro and I thought it was fantastic. I went there not knowing anyone or knowing what to expect. I've been riding for a long time and don't think I have ever been to such a friendly and welcoming event. It was great to see so many people just out having a good time. The fast guys were nice enough to not run me off the track when overtaking and on the odd occasion when I did catch up to someone getting past was never a problem which is a rare thing these days.

The reason I think this event was so successful was that you could ride just about anything, to everyone who rode an old dunger you are a legend! :D

I've done a dozen or more events (Harrow 2013 could've been the 13th......) including last years Harrow and it is the prime event on the calendar, a real must do.

Unfortunately, this year I broke my gear lever off trying to find neutral at checkpoint #1.

It was absolutely no trouble for one of the fellas there to drive me back to camp to get some vice grips and bring me back to the checkpoint again.

Too bad the vice grips didn't do the trick and I had to retire the event...at least I knew the way back to camp!

It was a fantastic run event, Drakey has excelled again along with the marvelous crew that power the event along. I will red plate at least one of my bikes ready for next years Harrow.

Cheers,
Chris.

Now that is nice to here that a forum member has ridden the otways, with a good team and the town people behind it , Gellibrand would be the ideal spot to run a vintage enduro, it has everything there, its close from melbourne CBD. Picture place, The towns people would welcome all, and the money would help the town. The general store owner is an ex- vmx racer, and does a lot of Enduro tours in the otways. Paul would welcome the idea. The Vinduro Club should look at it or the Classic Scramble club should hold a vinduro down there, all bikes will need to have club rego.

There are lots of state forests we can use for Red Plate rides but we need local knowledge complete with time and manpower to set out a course.
It’s private land of a decent size that we really need so we can accommodate unregistered bikes.

Tallarook Vinduro - 50 acres gives limited course (but still a good ride)
Harrow - 1500 acres makes a long adventurous course.

I have been in contact with the Gellibrand genernal store owner Paul Kosak, Paul is keen to look into helping with a course, he knows the area very well too, I have also spoken to Peter Drakeford about it too, and he is also keen to have a look as well toward the end of the year around November. Paul is happy to take a handful of fellow vintage riders for a look to see where the course would go., just need to cross a couple of obstacle first. ( ITs in the wind at the moment)

The thread is about the Harrow vinduro...until the last few replies that is.

Chris,

Just because a thread starts with a topic, doesn't mean it's not going to deviate?? Not much different to having a conversation with you face to face.

I'm sorry you have not had the best time on here recently, but you really need to read the hole thread, and then comment on the current trend of conversation!

You saw my "take the modern" and came back at me with the rules and regs of VINDURO! hence i let rip!

I stand corrected, Statement not Question!

I'm sorry if i upset you, but it sounded like your giving me orders? I don't take orders very well, as you can see

Guys, Guys!!!
I'm not here for a long time so I would like to make it a good time.

Sign up was busy Saturday morning

Rachel was busy selling T shirts, "it will ride up with wear" I thought I heard her say

Coffe cart was always busy
Dangerous Dave is a bit supicious of Waynes tall tales

Always a worry when the chief organiser can't get his modern Husky across the river during a (attempted) sweep ride.

My Sponsor give the Ossa the big thumbs up. You won't have any problems at all.

(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a393/gmcloa/Harrow%202013/Harrow-2013-071paul_zpsdb4aadc6.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/gmcloa/media/Harrow%202013/Harrow-2013-071paul_zpsdb4aadc6.jpg.html)

Just had to find a bolt and spacer to bolt the muffler back on after the MX practice and then wonder around camp in the dark trying to find some chewing gum to fix the leak in the tank thatI didn't notice until I filled the tank up.
He was right though, the Ossa was a blast to ride, I really enjoyed it.

Great photos GMC.

Reesky as he is now know was fast on every bike he rode, the DT was sight to see though.

Dave was trying to convince me that he didn't deserve the nickname dangerous and that he actually doesn't crash often....apart from that time it was caught on video and maybe another time......the statistics convinced me in the end. Or it could have been a story about the hills near Kenilworth being only slightly lower than Mt Everest.....

Ah, that would explain the hyper-aggressive riding... There was no doubt he was the fastest rider out there - I'm just not sure why he thought it was cool to carve up people on the practice day of a non-competitive event...
He went round the outside of me when he was on the DT, which would have been cool if I hadn't been pulling off the track, with my hand up. I thought that was pretty average, but some of his block passes on trailriders left a lot to be desired.

I know there were also *words spoken* to him out on the trails on Sunday...

Skullduggery? Wild dog? You guys........

All I was doing was tucking the Rokon in for the night dressed in its new blue jammies which were thoughtfully supplied by Texs' XT. I figured that the XT was much younger than the 'elderly' Rokon so wouldn't feel the wet and cold so badly. So it was nighty night and all quiet in the parc ferme :-*

There's a report on this event in the latest issue of Old Bike Australasia (#40), which is out now. Most recent edition of Trailzone also had a story about Harrow it.

Here's a vid of the river crossing that I uploaded recently too:
