Picked up my bargain basement rl250 project today, and at a glance the only major issue (apart from it needing a full resto) is rusty forks. Does anyone know if the upper tubes are common to other models?
-
Paul, pretty sure I used '82 DR250 inner tubes in mine. The RL tube is 'supposed' to be unique to the RL but I never properly sussed out how or why. I think 35mm TM250/400 an RM125M and S may also work. Will try and do do some comparisons when I get a few moments ;)
-
Mucho gracias Doc
-
Hold the gracious till I double check Paul :D..clutching at straws..it was quite a while ago, my grey matter needs defragging and the more I think about it the less I remember exactly just what I mixed now. 'Pretty sure' I still have a pair of rusty RL forks here to check though. The TM/RM fork tubes 'may' have been a little shorter hence I was thinking DR250. TS250ER maybe another option. Shit..I dunno..will have to physically check ::) nice to see you finally have some quality in the stable ;D
-
Don't forget the PE!
-
oh sorry..I forgot the PE ;)
-
Doc .. I gave you a set of Dr 250 forks way back and you fitted them to one of your treasures ;)
-
yeah I remember Stew..pretty sure those inners went into the TM250 front end I fitted to the TM125 way back. They were a little longer and I had to fit spacers to make it 'legal'. Near certain the forks in the RL at the moment are infact TS250ER in their entirety. I was going to swap the lowers and internals but never got that far..too impatient and it rode well enough as is :P
Paul..whatever the go is (which, I shall eventually re-enlighten myself to) there are alternatives that can be used so it's no biggy ;)
-
Cheers mate, no real hurry, won't be starting it for a couple of months. Looking forward to further enlightenment.
-
Motor spins freely, selects gears, all shaft splines are perfect, and it's still on the standard bore with no gouges at all. I thought it was only other people who found bikes like this?
-
Mainline the trials bikes are usually in fairly good nick unless some kid has got his hands on it , they live quite a less stressful life compared to mxers . Iain
-
Too late, I went down to the shed earlier and welded an old spanner onto the gearshaft
-
anybody chasing RL250 spares, PM me
-
do you have any upper fork legs with good chrome?

I guess not

It's not a pre65 bike so he wouldn't get away with it ::)

GCR states
Post Classic (Twin Shock):
For models designed and first
manufactured between 1st January 1965 to 31st December 1986
The way I interpret this means you have options such as the 35mm forks from a TS250ERN which look quite similar in appearance. "tis what I have fitted to mine ;)

having done a few Trials events this year,
Trials is very uncomplicated by comparison to VMX and the only real anal folk seem to be some of the old school brigade and even then its still very simple.
so i'd reckon if the bike/forks are not 100% perfect to the year but still fit into the broad guideline of "post classic" or "twinshock" (same thing) then like Doc has done, it'd be fine.

It's a wee ripper ;D ;D Better condition than mine :o
A man of your abilities should be able to make a great bike from that ;)
-
I was pretty sure that the early RM forks were 36mm and not 35mm which is what the Honda forks were?
-
Swiss..only the '75 RM125M/S and '76 RM125A had the 35mm forks ;)
-
I actually picked up some ts250 forks that'll do the job. Have collected most of the bits I need, just need a couple of spare hours in the shed to get stuck into it. Finished by christmas is the plan.
-
Great effort Paul. Only 15 months to get the forks together. Keep up the good work :o

Looking really good... wheels look "fast". However, not sure which Christmas you are referring to, as that was June 2013 :-). Looking forward to seeing the progress.

had some unforseen issues which shelved bikes altogether for a while. Maybe Christmas 2015?
The young 'n has been "helping" me with some of this one, since I showed him how to re-spoke wheels, he can't walk past the bike now without spinning them. It does look better ;D

Should be ready for CD no problems .... Note * check to see if has spark before loading. ;D

Vandy, there was at least 4 RL250's but 2 of them spent their time on the enduro loop and never made it to the trials section ;D

Resurrected from the dead... looks great!!
-
Looking the goods Mainline 8) someone must have been concerned about holing the clutch cover eh ;)
-
Were they cut off your PE frame Paul? 8)
-
You've got good eyes Doc :)
As if i would cut something off the PE! It'd be like Samson getting a haircut.
I was actually dropping some building materials at the tip and someone had thrown out some office chair frames which were a good solid gauge and had some different bends in them. I grabbed a couple and they worked a treat for additional case protection.

-
Very nice Paul...
-
I'm waiting to collect one of these as my next project. Looking forward to it
-
Very sophisticated. Nice rig. Have you got the cheese cutter and pipe to go with the trials gentlemen look Mainline? Or will you run the usual fishnets :o

Good stuff Paul. Another classic back from the near dead. Dig the case protectors you made. Looks factory. I'm thinking about getting a trials jigger, if for no other reason than being able to putt around out the back without disturbing too many of the neighbors.
-
thanks all, picked up some fibreglass guards on the weekend. After a bit of prep they're pretty much ready for paint. Hopefully have them bolted on in time for the Easter Bunny.
No, Steve, no fishnets. Don't want to rub the paint off the tank. Silk would probably be the go.
Thanks for posting those scans. I'm assuming$1462 was the purchase price at the time? They certainly have a raked out trailbike look to them. It'll be interesting to see how mine goes with the frame mods.
-
Ready for cd11 (hopefully) only ridden round the front yard.

looking forward to seeing it at CD11

Hopefully it goes alright, you can have a crack at it and tell me all the things i need to sort ;D

I see you replaced the potent OeTTINGER power plant with the more sluggish Suzuki equivalent ::)
May have been a move in the wrong direction.
Just sayin ......
-
chop chop..there goes any high speed stability ::) ;)
-
trials Doc, trials....low speed etc
Besides, I'm usually on the back wheel everywhere anyway.
-
Pulling the front end in will allow you to lengthen the swingarm which RLs probably needed, my TY250 has had the front steepened up & I had to lengthen the swingarm to get the wheelbase back to standard to help keep to front wheel down even with a very tired motor
-

uh huh..low speed trials ???..can't say I've ever tried that :P

Yep, i added about 25mm to the swingarm. You can see it if you compare the position of the chain adjusters on my bike to the ones in the original brochures

well, I've taken it to a trials practice day, ridden around our paddocks a fair bit and taken it for a spin up the range behind where we live, and can absolutely recommend getting a trials bike to muck around on. Great fun, work on your balance etc, and you don't annoy the neighbours too much while you're at it.
-
lookin real good there mate... ;)
-
Yes. Sweet as, isn't it.
You should send that piccy to mr Suzuki's marketing department

Hey where did you get the bars? Great bend for trials.

I actually pinched them off a mate. He picked up an original-ish low hour ty175 and swapped he bars out for some modern things. I picked up the leftovers....
practice day on at Canungra on the 13th Vandy!! you coming???
