Ok Guys, What are the thoughts of Black Rims on bikes like, say an Elsinore or Similar.
-
I am starting to fall for bikes that showcase historical originality in regards to VMX.
But if you are racing, time or bucks might dictate a "black budget choice" I guess.
AND black rims are easy to touch up after a tyre change, lets face it as far as touch up paint goes? black is black!
but if you are just looking for something different???? welllll it is your cat? do why should you have to justify the way you do it ;D
-
Personally i loathe black rims on any motorbike, car ,pushbike etc. My young blokes love them! Your choice :) regards Mark
-
I've got black rims on my old Maico square barrel but they've been there since 1992. Back then I thought I was being cool but today I hate 'em. The next time she leaves the shed she'll have nice shiny Akronts.
Welcome back Mick De....long time no see mate ;D
-
For me........... never! :D
I hate any coloured rims.
But as a wise man once said, "welllll it is your cat? do why should you have to justify the way you do it ;D "
-
Look out of place / odd (horrible, really) on most old dirt bikes .
Regards ,
Steve
-
I like black rims on the 80's era vintage bikes but i reckon they look a bit out of place on the earlier 70's bikes
-
For me........... never! :D
But as a wise man once said, "welllll it is your cat? ""DO"" why should you have to justify the way you do it ;D "
Owh yeah,, real nice catch Tony :D

I'm going black on my A5 250 KX.....all the gold is going....and you know what they say...."once you've gone black, you never go back" ;D
-
i was out today and saw a RM465 with black rims, yellow spokes and black hubs, and it actually looked not to bad, that was the catalyst for the conversation starter, its good to get different opinions and bounce ideas of like minded people.
i had thought about excel A60 rims with candy apple red hubs for one of my honda projects, but I'm in two minds i guess. only problem is that once you've gone to all that expense you sort of have to live with it, regardless of the outcome.
-
i like black rims that are on a couple of my maicos

hi mick :D
-
Welcome back Mick De....long time no see mate ;D
Thanks Mark.
Just trying to work my time more productively, so maybe I can find more time to turn up where it counts.
My blood will cease to flow before my lust of VMX slows Mark.
And a merry Christmas too!! And for that matter a merry Christmas to all, cheers, Mick.
-
Looks good fairy foss boy. ;D

That's sitting at DDR, i nearly puked at the yellow spokes :o

I reckon too much bling looks pox on bikes from an era where there was little or no bling at all..

Yeap, I reckon so too. It's like putting a new set of tits on an ninety year old, just doesn't work ::)
better off keeping the respect

Ha ha.. that's a scary thought!
-
I like my wheels round , because thats how I roll ;D ;D
-
Luke, I have them on pretty much every bike (and car) I have. Not gloss but satin black is a good look with stainless spokes.
Hard to get black rims for the early stuff due to the spoke offset. I am restoring 2 x CR's 74 and 76 and will most likely go with the silver Sun rims on these.
Below is the first 79 CR I restored with powder coated black rims and re-zinced spokes

Looks bloody to Shane.. 8) 8)
-
I was never going to have a set on an old bike. I ordered a new set of rims and spokes for my 250 H (silver) and black turned up. I was going to send 'em back but a critical thing happened. They knocked a heap of dollars off. ;)
I figured being a racer it won't matter much so I laced them up and they look grouse. :)
I also don't like them on anything earlier than the late seventies onward and I think yellow spokes would just be puke!

Not my cup of tea but thats what makes VMX great=Individual people doing what they do

You have done a nice job on this Paul, it's a great looking bike, wish it was in my shed ;) Oh, and I love the black rim on it. They certainly don't suit a lot of the early 70's bikes though. (only my opinion)
Stan.
-
i was actually thinking of putting them on a 79 Elsinore, nice bike STW996, what pipe are you running on that, the one i have has a immaculate stock pipe so i sort of didn't want to run it with that on, and have you had any problems with or tips for racing the Elsinore, i only ask as i haven't raced one before, and lets face it, every bike has its little quirks.
-
(http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k495/firko2/firko1970Maico350.jpg)
As I said earlier, I anodized the DID rims black back in 1992 and nobody else had done it to a vintage bike to my knowledge. At the time most folks including myself thought it was as cool as a cucumber but today it looks wrong, especially seeing the bike's a pre 70 classer. I don't mind black rims on Evo and later bikes but it's up to the owner. There are too many 'cookie cutter' bikes out there so a touch of individuality doesn't hurt that much.
Of course, there was a even stranger time when I actually thought purple rims looked good. Please don't let it happen to me again ;D
(http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k495/firko2/santa.jpg)
-
I agree with JO and the consensus - put black ones on my 78 CR Garage Queen and loved them - but also don't think they would look right on my pre 75 bikes?
-
I'm going black on my A5 250 KX.....all the gold is going
Geez, you’ve got a cheek, outing Marc’s yellow fetish and then you plan to destroy the uniqueness of the KX.
Personally I don’t like black rims on any bike, I’m a bit old fashioned and only like gold or silver.
-
I have black rims on my 77 KTM and had a few KTM faithful grumbling about them but as I built it from so many parts and it is so far from stock (but doesn't look it) I didn't think it would matter. I will build another set of wheels for it one day in stock colors.
-
or perhaps too much black..VMX Mag#28.
The (paul from pg1 of this topic) Maico's black rims dont distract you from the main body work. Its got to blend.. 8)

-
The black and purple rims weren't my only taste lapse. Let's not forget my fluro pink and Fluro orange Maico's circa 1992. I actually fitted the pink guards to the 440 Maico purely to piss scrutineer Peter Drakeford off at the '92 Ravenswood Nats. He and I had been having some differences in philosophy at the time so I thought the flash colour would spark him up. The idea was to only have them on for one meeting but great plans often go astray and they stayed on for 3 or 4 years until they faded. Apologies for the thread hijack Luke

Some bikes with black rims seem to look better than others. I don't mind them on the KX pictured or the later 78 CR250.
I guess with pre 90 bikes coming now we are going to have to be a bit more open minded to splash graphics and lairier looking bikes.

BLAcks all good, just dont get into the anodised flashy colours
-
alison i did the article on cz its owner is Kevin not paul
-
Don't worry bout it firko, i think the pick plastics are Gold, hahaha
-
its been good to see everyones different points over view, i think personally I'm going to look into a set of rims but i won't powder coat the originals, i will make a complete different set.
-
You can get your original rims anodized at A1 anodizing at Yatala south of Brisvegas
-
Hate them! HATE THEM! HATE THEM!
In MY opinion nothing looks worse than black rims on a vintage bike or even a modern bike, it looks to me like the spokes are somehow attached to the tyre and theres no rim, it just looks WRONG
Same applies to matt black wheels on cars and matt black helmets and the dickheads who think they're "stealthy" the only thing under the radar is their lack of good taste.
-

DG did back in the day. I am waiting for the first VMXer to turn up with coloured tyres...... but funny the things we put shit on like boot savers back in the day seem to turn up as the future must have accessory sooner or later

In this pre 90 era it is going to be all about the splat graphics

Someone should pay a price for thise pink/black tracky-dacks!!!!!
-
i think you mean happy pants, there certainly period correct happy pants not trackies.
Stop..... HAmmer time
-
If everyone just had the exact same coloured bikes it would be pretty boring rims aren't a forever thing though you can always buy some silver ones again if you can't live with another colour.
Cyclegod plain helmets are good they are hard to get nowadays you have to have some design scribbled all over I just have a plain gloss black road helmet.
I couldn't get just a plain helmet for the dirt when I was looking all of them just have scribbles which looks crap when you are riding an old bike.
-
If it "floats your boat" do it.

Not only do I agree totally, I also like her singlet. ALOT.
-
If you feel you need to do it, that's fine, but they always look like they're covered in sh!t from lap 1. What IS bloody woeful is, I had a look at the pics from the Goodwood Revival, and a couple of the reasonably-accurate-replica (but newly assembled from newly-fabbed bits) Manx Nortons were fitted with black rims : Spew! Which on-track, made them look like oil-leaking sh!tboxes from the 1960s. the very image they are trying hard to neutralise ! ::)
-

In 1993 they were cooool John. That's the late Geoff Eldridge in the psychedelic trackies but I'm holding my Maico in pink/blue boardies and a Rocky and Bullwinkle t shirt. Fashion or not, I'd never be seen dead in those trackies ::).
I agree with everyone that black rims on pre 75 bikes looks a tad wrong. They absolutely spoil this otherwise nice resto.

I bought this NOS 70s Eldorado helmet that came with free goggles and a picture of a Wagon Train on one side and Cowboy on the other.... ;D, I was going to respray but decided I liked it.
-
Since you ask for opinions, I am with Cyclegod - black rims are hideous and ruin an otherwise nice restoration, like the Yamaha in Firko's picture.
-
Gee don't hold back Cyclegod!
Do these bikes really look that bad?
It will all depend on the other colours involved, but I for one think they look great on the Honda Red
-
they look great ;) sand groppers = rose hancock. no style at all ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Shane, It's what you like ......

In a word YES especially the white framed abomination :o
-
Those bikes look as hot as Cyclegods avatar Shane....next years gonna be good in evo......there'ill be GREEN bikes with BLACK rims.....we'll be doin a million miles an hour in the pits Shane......wont have to venture on the track ;D.....I better not put a piccie up of my RM250T with BLUE rims (did that 10 years ago).....this is turning into a Suzuki footpeg episode. ;D

You fashionista you....... the wheel of VMX fashion turns like the Mayan Calander and fool becomes cool given 10 years or so.
Is this seat pre 90 legal ???

I better not put a piccie up of my RM250T with BLUE rims (did that 10 years ago).
In the mid 90's a mate built a pair of Elsinore's, a green stripe '74 250 with matching green anodized rims and a flow on '75 red stripe 125 with the rims anodized red. To everyone's surprise they looked terrific but he only raced them the once before retiring them to the pool room and concentrating on triathlons. We're hoping to get him and the bikes back to the sport next year.
-
Now i think that we are all missing the point here...... i think we need to all show our support and get that fluro pink back on the Macio combined with the happy pants. Priceless

You have to remember that 'ol GE was a fashionista of the worst kind. It was a fashion statement even I couldn't come to grips with. I've still got the boardies although only one leg fits in them these days. The Maico's now dressed in its original orange fibreglass and living in retirement as a pool room queen somewhere in the Blue Mountains.

Speaking of fashion icons Are they 'Go the Rat' nylons ????
-
Yep, they sure are but they're a little bit smallish these days. They're good quality too, if JT can come back, why not our own Rat Clothing?
-
MArc - I like boot savers.......................................and have finally and just recently got a pair as part of the wardrobe!
I loved boot savers!!! I'm trying to find the material to make some more, I have had the JT logo copied at the local embroiderer and will make a JT pair :-)
-
I normally wouldn't do it, but was given a black front so I painted the rear to match. I do not mind them on the bike.

Very nice Yami mate, good to see a 4-stroke thumping around.

I reckon the black rims look awesome when combined with the red frame, tank, etc. Looks a bit too much on that IT,due to the engine, pipe, and frame being the same colour.Other than that its your bike,do what you want.
Cheers,Mark.
-
its appealing as late model 4 stroke recycling project

Blech rims not. i yhink they make the wheels look heavey or something, i'm all for clear anodised or good old shiney mud catchers some Gold look good on the right bike. to much colour makes even the best look cheap.
but as my wife says Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder thats why i like her so much.
-
Yep, well i've checked it out about 50 times and there is REDHOT spunk taking her knickers off on Adams' post :o I'll just have a look again to make sure :P :P
Nice,.... cheers Mark

I am thinking he may as well have gone the hole hog and bought some red vinyl first, then got some paint colour matched with enough of it to do the rear guard as well ::)
Hey that gives me an idea :o Nah, on second thoughts, heads already chockers with way too many ideas :D
Hi A & S ;D
-
That red thing hurts my eyes...
-
Mmmmm....powdercoat black $50 or new rim 200$+.??.....on RM400
-
Do it once, do it right.....hope this helps ;D
-
Mmmmm....powdercoat black $50 or new rim 200$+.??.....on RM400
Powdercoat can get ugly at the first tyre change, especially if you do not use a machine
-
Mmmmm....powdercoat black $50 or new rim 200$+.??.....on RM400
If the rims are still in decent condition get them anodized black.. it costs $50 per rim where i live and will last better than powdercoating.

Faaaaark mate. Those spokes are pulling at quite an angle to the nipples! I had the same problem when I laced a set of modern Excels onto one of my 414's. Might wanna get that sorted..... :-X
-
Fark nice Maico mate ..... how does it go ;)
-
I like the black rims an any other colour that matches, if they were out then they would on been on the older bikes. Maybe if you were doing up a garage queen never to be ridden then maybe leave it stock. shane as always your bikes are the best looking in the pits. well done. hope to see you out there soon. thats if you can get off the crf 450...
-
settle down Marc that maico swingarm is getting you excited.
-
Thats Kev's bike Foxxy ;D
-
ya i kown, i have even started for him, love the maico but shane's honds are very well done.

There is room for both. Look up the word individual in the dictionary. Actually I think I'm both show boat and diehard enthusiast.

I like em.

owners choice and if it makes up numbers in a class then thats good cheers chris
