Title: Code of Conduct for OzVMX
Post by: Graeme M on October 07, 2010, 09:10:19 pm
I will draft a Code of Conduct and post it on the site as a sticky. This will govern how we expect members to behave and how I will deal with problems. Please offer your thoughts here.

I think a few might be:

1. No personal 'abuse' - that is, no aggressive slinging off at other members, or for that matter non-members.
2. Criticism of individuals/businesses should be limited to factual criticism - ie no saying "business X is crap just cos I say so".
3. Commentary about clubs should be kept ot a minimum. And yes, the endless HEAVEN threads is what I am referring to here. It is divisive and destructive to get stuck into clubs and their executive. Minor criticism and suggestions are OK, but let's keep it sensible. Real issues should be dealth with through a club's organisational arrangements.
4. Respect for ALL members is expected. Light hearted jibes etc is fine, but whatever we say can be misinterpreted. Treat others as you expect to be treated.

When did this happen? As I've said many, many times, the criticism HEAVEN has copped on these forums has invariably been from non-members, and usually from people who haven't interacted with the club at all in a long time.

Thou shalt not be blasphemous.

blasphemou - showing lack of due respect or veneration, "irreverent parts book scholars mocking sacred vmx artifacts", "noisy irreverent tourists on noisy irreverent road bikes", characterized by profanity or cursing, "foul-mouthed and blasphemous", "blue language", "profane words"

Good move Graeme but this should have been laid out a long time ago

Sending abusive PMs because they are to cowardly to say it on the forum to show what a turkey they are.

Yes, it would be good to stop that too.

I really don't get this.  Why would you take it to heart ??  Send them back a reply that says you have worked out where they live and you are sending the boys around for a bit of knee-capping.

Grum - I have trolled the OZVMX Forum for many a day now - and the ones that have pissed me off are minimal  -really - yes even Craig  ;D - you can set all the rules you like but at the end of the day you will be adjudicating exactly as you are now. Set a rule and peoples defintions of complying with that will differ and you will be no more further than you are now.  I haven't seen a complaint yet about you locking a thread yet - maybe keep it at that level - the forum will be self regulating - the d/hs will piss off????

99% of the inhabitants of this forum are decent folk who possess an inbuilt code of behavior that we use in every facet of our lives. The occasional meltdown should be expected as we don't all agree on every issue and sometimes our inner 'Mr Grumpy' overrides our 'Mr Sensible' . I think that the heated debate is a part and parcel of intelligent society and just about always sort themselves out in the end.

Self regulation's worked just fine up to now so I don't think we need a rule book.

Hi ER,
We have your prototype pyjamas on order Rudy. You should be outfitted by late next week in a very fetching shade of grey with an elastic waist to make life easier for you…

When we are happy that they do the job, we will order them for everybody.

Just on the topic of forum rules, I thought that this might be a source of amusement:
http://www.bmsc.com.au/forums/australian-rallying-discussion/14309-new-forum-rules.html

They were introduced with a straight face, but needless to say, they didn't last long.

Jeez Nathan, my eyes started glazing over by rule 14, I would have been comatose by #42. Someone within the BMSC (Matt perhaps)has some control issues that may need a touch up. :o

Yeah, that was pretty much everyone's response!

FWIW, they definitely were NOT Matt's rules - he was a very unwilling player in them...

Half the reason I hang in this forum is because most of us are mature age.  I was on one particular forum once that originally had a great bunch of good humored blokes.  But as it grew and a lot of youngsters and tossers got onto it, it went downhill fast.  What happens on OZVMX is nothing compared to the insults, abuse and downright threats I have seen on that other bike forum.  They eventually had a major crackdown and police it better.

I think the only problems that occasionally crop up on this one is because it's full of racers and that competative nature sometimes comes out on the keyboard.

Personally, insulting or threatening someone from the safety of your keyboard is pretty weak and unaustralian.

As Firko says, 99% of the posts are fine because at least 99% of the members live and work within acceptable standards.

There is no question that this is one of the very best Forums of its type, and without pissing in his pocket I reckon Graeme does a commendable job of keeping it ticking along.

There are some things that can't be legislated for.    For legislation to be effective it needs to be enforceable and there are plenty of examples out there in the arenas of motor racing and finance and you-name-it where it simply doesn't work.    Any attempt to ' legislate ' for a better standard of posting on the Forum will introduce the need for a policeman and will involve extra time to ensure compliance.   Extra work would be the last thing Graeme needs right now.

KISS.   Things are OK.    On those odd occasions when someone steps over our personal mark ( no, not Firko, that would be some leap  ;D ) treat it with the respect it demands and ignore it.

I value the depth of information, the common interests, the support from so many of you out there on the other side of the sun, and the ability of this forum to keep me half sane when work committments drive me crazy.     Thanks Guys, keep up the great work.     T250.

I dunno, maybe I’m too straight, but I think setting up an alias to look like some one else’s name is a step too far.
What may be a piss take can make someone look responsible for statements they didn’t make.

Talking shit with your mates is shit stirring but to set up some one that you may not like is bullying.

If your kids copped that at school you wouldn’t tolerate it, and as we’re “supposed” to be mature we should be above that.

About this issue ... the posting of a thread to mock someone, using their identity.

I'd been in touch with the target a few times after CD7, and he was ALREADY
deeply hurt over things posted about him earlier in the year.  Deeply.

(target more correctly equals victim).

I'm sorry to hear of Ji's hurt. It shouldn't happen. This is suppose to be a hobby and interest for all.

Fortunately for me I read over and ignore much of the crap that goes on, but it still shouldn't go on or be tolerated. But other than having an IQ test or maturity  test to join the forum I can't think of a solution. May be some 'car park' counseling at the next CD  ::).

On some other forums im on they have a no tollerance to a lot of the nonsense that goes on here and they have Time Out system, so if you do the wrong thing after being formally warned, then your account gets locked up for a couple weeks so you cant post or log onto the forum. If you continually break the rules then your account is locked for good. Kind of reminds me school a bit :). Until there is some sort of penalty or deterrant against bad behaviour on here, then it will just continue.

Another idea is more moderators on here to keep an eye on things and keep a look out for when Graeme is not on here.

I agree, but I still think that Ji was being more than a bit precious with his tutorials. I personally liked them and appreciated the spirit in which they were given but I feel that when he continued to post points that were clearly in error and dismissing attempts by others including myself at offering opinion, he took this as a personal attack. His 'school marm' attitude didn't help either. It's disappointing that he took criticism so personally. I can't remember any of the criticism being personal, most of it was purely attempts to correct errors which he wouldn't accept.

As someone who continually cops shit from a particular forum member I'd advise Ji to ignore the personal criticisms as I have....lifes too short to deal with that crap. If I'm one of those who offended Ji I genuinely apologise. Bring the tutorials back, the CZ fork thread you started on Cousin Weedy was informative and worth saving because of the weedy community input. Opening your tutorials to allow for open discussion can only improve the result.

As for the Ji Gant or posts...I missed the offensive post but I think most of us realised from post one that it was a scammer. I just knew that he was building up to eventually hammer somebody, you get to be able to spot them after a while. I'm sorry it was such an up front bloke as GMC who was the recipient.

The Ji Gant or username seems to have disappeared, along with I guess the posts in question. A shame I didn't pick that up earlier as I can easily trace them via IP address/email if it's one of several usernames.

I must make an effort to get the code of conduct posted up. As far as copping shite on here, well... you do need to develop a thick skin I think. I know that sometimes it all goes too far and it's hard to know how someone will react when that happens.

So if you fugg a chook ones , you always a choockfugger ? Is that what you mean Billi ?  Yes there was a time I had different avatars ( like a few others ) but just for fun  and not to bully one individual in a primitive
 way . There is a difference  ;)

Wally me old mucker what you do with poultry is your buisness  ;D but respect for coming clean. Glad i couldn't make Xmas dinner though , who stuffs your Turkey  ;D

I dont know if what was said was bullying (but i didnt see all the post) what i did see was an obvious piss take and if taking the piss is now bullying then pass me the Bantam and the vaseline cos i need a new hobby  ;D

One of the great things about this Forum is its a reflection of the way Australians deal with things , Aussie would have to be the last bastion of NON PC shit in the free world :D

For forks sake dont let that ever change , we who live outside Australia look in with envy,  your country is probably one of the last REAL places in the world and this forum is a reflection of that life .

If you dont believe me go into some of those Yank or Pom forums  ::) you can have an opinion as long as its PC and doesnt conflict with the opinion of one of the many Moderators  ::) One Pommy forum has more mods than members  ;D

Yes there was a time I had different avatars ( like a few others ) but just for fun  and not to bully one individual in a primitive
 way . There is a difference  ;)
I dont know if what was said was bullying (but i didnt see all the post) what i did see was an obvious piss take and if taking the piss is now bullying then pass me the Bantam and the vaseline cos i need a new hobby  ;D

What was going on  ???

I'm sorry it was such an up front bloke as GMC who was the recipient.

What, me worry?  ;D

I didn’t find it offensive to myself, nor did I notice anything offensive in the thread.
But it was such an ordinary thread it had me wondering what the supposed piss take was supposed to be by using Ji’s name.
There’s not much that ruffles my feathers but I think if someone tried to use a name that mimicked mine I wouldn’t be pleased.
I worked out it wasn’t the real Ji within a few posts but this site is read by a lot of people that never post and don’t read every post so there would be some who didn’t get it.
“Chinese whispers” and all that.

I also find Ji to be an over sensitive new age guy and I don’t know why he doesn’t post anymore but to focus on someone that hasn’t been on here for 5 months makes it feel like a vendetta.
You may not see it as attacking him but if he feels he’s being attacked then do you really want to keep pushing him until he does something stupid?

As for rules and such, I don’t think you could ever write anything suitable.
I actually like the freedom and politically incorrect way on here too.
Graeme has given us a lot of rope and basically lets us self regulate.
Yeah it gets a bit heated at times but when ever someone steps out of line too much there’s usually someone else that will pull them back in line.
That’s usually what mates do for each other.
I think it’s worked fine so far.

Just my 2c worth

Exactly.

I don,t know if "OVER  sensitive" is completely correct as he was told, by a forum member ,that he would be going home in an ambulance next ride day.
We all deal with things differently. Ji decided to go away and make new friends.
I would have done it differently but then Ji is a lot nicer person than I am.
I never did like the bullys picking on the weaker kids.

I find it hard to beleive a forum member theatened GI with something like that considering 90% of forum members dont ride/race (or do very little) and he is one of them so I dont know when they where ever going to meet. Also, most of the bullshit that goes on here is just a laugh and allthough GI could be a right pain in the arse I think thats going to far and as for the conspirousy theories, you can leave them in the bush. Like I said in an earlier post, blame it on the weather. Hey Mike, is the flood effecting you out your way?, Dalby looks pretty stuffed.

I can't believe that anyone could be as stupid as to threaten Ji with "going home in an ambulance" . Sure Robert's a tad sensitive to criticism and could at times be quite frustrating but to upset someone enough to threaten violence? ....I can't see anyone I know in this sport stooping that low, in fact I don't believe it happened.

Ji's main "crime" is being a bit different, and if that's considered a reason to threaten violence I think many more of us should also be worried. ;D

Got to be a bit interesting here.
Got some Indians in a garage here.   New to town.
Mate asked them why they weren,t packing.     Answer was that the water wouldn,t get them.
It did.
Haven,t seen anyone at the garage since.
Fair bit of local damage.
Bridges, roads and houses.
Not the biggest flood I,ve seen here but very quick.
