I'm still trying to work out the settings on my new slide scanner but here are some historic out takes from the very first vintage photo shoot we did for ADB back in 1986. That's me and my old 350 Squarie and my mate Chris Ellis's '72 400 Husky.
Geoff Eldridge took the shots and wrote the piece in the May 86 ADB (I think). The response from that piece was amazing and it prompted us to get the whole vintage thing happening. I've got literally thousands of transparencies from my twenty years of covering our sport so once I sort out the foibles of this bloody thing I'll post more.
The shoot was at Amaroo Park that had been unused for about 5 years and had been eroded away to the point that the main straight was the only usable part. Ivan Stibbard and Ray Price from the track owners, the ARDC dropped in on the shoot and didn't take much convincing from GE and I to repair the track and bring it back to 1971 spec for vintage racing. The ARDC were brilliant to work with in those days and really got behind the project. It took about a year of part time work to get the old track usable enough to be the venue for of the birth of VMX on the Easter weekend of 1988.

Firko,
I think you have the slide the wrong way round. The husky has the pipe down the right side in the top photo and the bottom photo. :o :o :o
-
Correctomundo Petey ;). I threw that deliberate mistake in to test you train spotters ::).
I'll repost it the right way around once I work out the colour saturation gizmo and have the time to do it.
The little boy watching us get shit out of Chris's Falcon is Bernie Ellis's son Dan who is now 30 and heads one of the biggest advertising agencies in the world, based in Singapore. Time flies!

Firko I waiting for some of your collection to roll out from your scanner

Here's a couple more out takes from the 1986 Amaroo ADB shoot.

The shots below are from mid 90s ADB photo shoots that for varying reasons never went to print. The blue bike #12 is this forums own 'Yamaico', most recently notable for doing a step by step build of his 465 Yamaha dirt tracker. This bike is his namesake, the legendary Yamaico, a '71 Maico fitted with a methanol burning MX250 Yamaha engine. This bike is a very fast and beautifully built special that still makes an occasional appearance. The other bike #45, is Mick Hockley's 350 Maico square barrel that has enjoyed a career as a motocrosser, dirt tracker and in recent years, a very capable road racer. Mick's still got the bike but rarely races her these days.

Here are some unlabeled Nepean vintage dirt track shots from 1995. I can't remember who the riders are with the exception of Thomas Thompson on his Redline Triumph 750 (scanned backwards, sorry 'bout that! ::))

The last shot is TH on his Elstar Jap.

So it is Steve....I didn't recognise him actually going sideways! ::) Any idea on the other slider guys?
-
Hey Firko, promise not to laugh, but can you remember what lens you used for the second shot down? #17
You're obviously right on the edge of the track and that shot's just got a really good 'feel' to it.
*Disclaimer: I don't know all the technical stuff, I just judge photos by how they 'feel'. ::)

Here are some random VMX shots from varying years. The first shot is of a very early pre 80 race at Ravenswood, the other of someone coming out of a hole at (I think) Tanunda and the other shot is Jonesy on Black Betty and Bernie Ellis on his Maico 490 drag racing at Barrabool at CD3

Sorry Firko I can't help you with the others but 17 can obviously ride a bit, close to full lock & feet up.
-
ey Firko, promise not to laugh, but can you remember what lens you used for the second shot down?
How can I not laugh when a photographer as good and well respected as you asks an old Box Brownie pilot like me what lens I was using at a club day 15 years ago :o. I'm honoured. I'd be pretty sure I would have been using my Canon EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 zoom. I used that lens for just about everything back then on either my Canon EOS 5 or EOS 650. I still use the same lens on my digi EOS 400D. It's bulletproof.
-
That lens is excellent value, for sure! But it looked to me like that shot was taken with something shorter.
No matter either way, it's a great shot that really makes you feel like you were there. ;D
Keep 'em coming!
-
Maybe it was the 35-80 1.4-5.6 Canon lens Tony....I really can't remember. I've now got a problem with the scanner software where every time I download some shots and then turn the scan program off, the computer won't recognise the device the next time I go to download. I then have to remove the program from my hard drive and go through the whole download from disc process again. It's getting very old, very quickly so until I work out whether the problem is me, the program or my computer (or all three of us) I'll be giving this little gizmo a miss.
-
I'll have to work out what a scnner is as I have 22 rolls of film form our trip to Europe in '87 so there should be some good sidecar shots in amongst that-other than what is is the photo album!
Pity it's not pre '85 I guess.

You don’t happen to have a Dell computer do you?
A few years back a friend of a friend did me a great deal on a new computer. ::)
I had noticed that he had installed a Dell XP windows system on it but didn’t think much of it.
Couldn’t get the DVD burner to work so took it back to him, he changed some settings, said it worked fine and gave it back, I plugged it back in to find it still didn’t work. Lack of confidence in him over a few other shortcuts saw me take it to a local shop where I went through the same thing, worked fine in the shop but as soon as I took it home it didn’t work again.
Was told it was probably the burner having issues with the motherboard so I ended up buying another burner only to go through the same thing again.
Finally the guy in the shop asked to reinstall windows and noticed the Dell version.
Turns out Dell computers are designed to only run Dell components.
It could be made to run the burner but as soon as it was turned off and restarted it would refuse to recognize any “foreign” components.
Just wondering if that’s why it won’t recognize your new scanner hardware all the time
-
You don’t happen to have a Dell computer do you?
No Geoff....my computer is a bit like my bikes, it's 'a bit of this, a bit of that' computer an IT mate put together for me about three years ago. Up until this glitch it's always accepted almost anything I've loaded. The only other problem I had was it not accepting the software for my Kodak pocket camera. By accident I found that the program for my previous Fuji pocket camera recognised the Kodak camera for some weird reason so I didn't bother looking further into the problem.

I managed to download a few more old transparencies before I again got the shits with having to re install the program after every operation. Not happy Jan.

South Australian John Shwartz jumping his Cheney BSA Gold Star at the Barrabool Nats in 1995. Unbelievably, John is actually having a severe stroke as this photo is being taken. He crashed heavily, was unconcious and was rushed to hospital where the stroke was diagnosed. John had no body movement on one side and couldn't speak or smell. Eventually after a couple of years of serious rehabilitation John learned to walk and talk again and is today back farming. Unfortunately he'll never race again. John's son is David Schwartz, team mate to the late, great Andy Caldecott in the KTM rally team. He occasionally rides his dads immaculate Cheney in vintage events.

Ron Dinsdale aboard Paul Stackers Maico at the 02 Ravo Nats. Ron and Andy Caldecott diced in a number of classes throughout the weekend with the results being pretty even. During one particular race Ron lost the Maicos seat yet still beat Andy to the finish line in one of Vintage history's most memorable races. It was electrifying.

great pics there Firko! just a small request...would you have any pics of an IT400F from 1979? I've bought 1 and would like to find as much info on it as possible.
-
Nah, no IT photos...I was living overseas in 1979 and by then was taking more pictures of mountains and naked hippie chicks than dirt bikes :o.

Hey Firko, its fine by me if you post pics of naked hippie chicks ;D

I prefer that other Honda jingle of the time..........
"Hop on a Honda, and go!" ;D
(I can think of a variation on this but I think I'll 'leave it alone'. ::) :P)
